That 70's Show

I spent time getting my mind on God & the Word.I had a time of reminiscing this morning. I woke up very late because I went to bed at the time I'm usually getting up. I stayed up washing all my clothes & unwittinglly I added an extra hour because I forgot to add the clothes in the washer twice & found out when the machine stopped. I was on the internet & I found some old 70's contemporary christian music that I loved as a child. At the Baptist Church of the Good Shepherd in Miami, these groups used to come & perform. There was no charge but an offering would be taken up for the church & the guests. This included Shirley Ceasar (who always had a family member or two with her), Andrea Crouch & others. My ultimate favorite people - Walter Hawkins & his choir. I used to wonder if they would ever sing a song I did not like. They were not accepted in many churches as contemporary artist. Hawkins had a bunch of women who were former prostitutes ,drug addicts etc.. He would call on them to give their testimony at random. That was how those years were. Everything was about evangelism on the streets. Almost daily there was someone preaching on the street. Street ministries were more popular than the traditional church preachers with the young & those hungry to be used by God.
It was a very exciting time for the church. Author Blessit was carrying a cross on his shoulder around the world. TBN was new & they preached the gospel constantly. This was during the Carter years, he was much like Obama in philosophy, especially when it came down to the economy. He spent money on social programs & sent more to terrorist nations trying to befriend them, things got worse for the people it was supposed to be helping, especially minorities. I remember white people avoided liberty city & other areas at all costs. There was a lot of fear on everyones' part. Black people were rioting constantly. There was always some opportunist ready to lead these revolts against some perceived white plot to keep them hungry.
It was rough & people flocked to these free concerts every night. The big message was the Rapture, when are we going home? The church by & large was poor. At least it felt that way. Prices were sky rocketing. Gasoline was the big money hog. Car washes, gas stations, convenient stores became self service places. They could not afford to pay employees & the high taxes. My mothers' boss cut her salary & they were worried about losing their home. Then there was a prophecy that started to be spoken around the world. Money was coming into the church, the wealth of the wicked was coming to the righteous. They said , Gods' purpose was to send & support missionaries around the world where the gospel was not heard. People did give generously even the poor. On TBN offerings sky rocketed. The message began to change from praying for the lost so God could send you, to God wants you to be rich, you do not have to go to Africa - we just need more money to send this signal around the world. The only thing is the same message about giving them money so they could spread the message & you could be rich is being heard by them as well.
