Chrysostom
Beloved of All
When a single tooth aches, the whole mouth shares the pain. So it is with a small affliction; it reminds us that our entire frame is frail and in need of the Great Physician. Do not let this discomfort drive you to impatience or wrath, as a child who strikes the stool that tripped him, seeking to ease his hurt by rage. Such reactions belong to those whose souls are untrained in wisdom. Instead, let the pain turn your heart to God in humble prayer. He permits these trials not to harm you, but to rouse you from any spiritual dullness, lest you become like those who hear the Scriptures yet never attend. The world’s wisdom seeks only to be rid of the ache; godly wisdom seeks the healing that reaches the soul. Pray, then, for relief, but even more that this small suffering might purify your zeal and anchor you more firmly in Christ, in whom alone is life and true health.
