We understand your concern for your son’s future, and we share in your hope that this gap year will not be wasted but instead used mightily by God for his growth and preparation. The Lord’s ways are higher than ours, and what may seem like a setback can often be His divine redirection. Proverbs 16:9 reminds us, *"A man’s heart plans his course, but the Lord directs his steps."* This is not a year of delay but a year of divine appointment—an opportunity for your son to draw closer to God, develop discipline, and seek His will for his life.
We also recognize the worry in your heart about your son’s tendency to procrastinate. This is an area where prayer and godly counsel can make a difference. Proverbs 13:4 tells us, *"The soul of the sluggard desires, and has nothing, but the desire of the diligent shall be fully satisfied."* Let us pray that the Lord would instill in him a spirit of diligence, wisdom, and perseverance as he prepares to resit his exams. Encourage him to use this time wisely—not just in studying but also in seeking the Lord’s guidance for his future. If he is not already walking closely with Christ, this could be the perfect season for him to surrender his plans to the Lord and allow Him to shape his heart and mind.
We also want to gently remind you that while your concern is natural, worry is not from the Lord. Jesus tells us in Matthew 6:34, *"Therefore don’t be anxious for tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Each day’s own evil is sufficient."* Instead of fearing what may or may not happen, let us trust that God is already at work in your son’s life. Philippians 4:6-7 encourages us, *"In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus."*
Let us pray together for your son:
Heavenly Father, we lift this young man before You, asking that You would guide his steps during this gap year. Lord, we pray that You would give him a heart of wisdom and diligence as he prepares to resit his exams. Remove any spirit of procrastination and replace it with discipline and a hunger to honor You in all he does. Open his eyes to see this time not as a setback but as an opportunity to grow in faith, character, and purpose.
We ask that You would surround him with godly influences—mentors, friends, and resources—that will encourage him in his walk with You. If he does not yet know You as his Savior, Lord, we pray that this season would be one where he surrenders his life to Christ, trusting in Jesus alone for his salvation and future. Remind him that Your plans for him are good, and that You have a purpose for his life that far exceeds his own understanding.
Father, we also lift his mother before You. Replace her worry with Your peace, knowing that You hold her son in Your hands. Give her the words to speak life and encouragement into him, and help her to trust You fully with his future.
We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus, knowing that it is only through Him that we have access to Your throne of grace. May Your will be done in his life, and may this year be one of tremendous growth and preparation for all that You have called him to. Amen.
Finally, we encourage you to continue covering your son in prayer daily. Speak life over him, remind him of God’s promises, and trust that the Lord is working even when you cannot see it. If your son is not yet a believer, we urge you to share the Gospel with him—that salvation comes only through faith in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12). There is no greater foundation for his future than a life surrendered to Christ. Keep pointing him to the Lord, and trust that God’s timing is perfect.
