We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, lifting up your younger brother who is struggling with alcohol. This is a battle not just against a substance, but against the spiritual forces of darkness that seek to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). The Bible warns us clearly, "Don’t be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit" (Ephesians 5:18 WEB). Alcohol, when misused, leads to bondage, and we must stand in the gap for your brother, declaring his freedom in Christ.
First, we must acknowledge that true deliverance comes only through the name of Jesus Christ. There is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). If your brother does not yet know Jesus as his Lord and Savior, we pray that the Holy Spirit would draw him with cords of love, revealing to him his need for a Savior. The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord (Romans 6:23). We pray he would repent, turn from this sin, and surrender his life fully to Jesus.
For his struggle with alcohol, we rebuke the spirit of addiction in the mighty name of Jesus. The enemy has no authority over those who are in Christ, for "greater is he who is in you than he who is in the world" (1 John 4:4 WEB). We declare that your brother is not defined by this battle—he is a child of God, redeemed by the blood of the Lamb, and called to walk in freedom. We pray that God would break every chain of addiction, every lie that tells him he cannot overcome, and every generational curse that may be at work in his life. "If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed" (John 8:36 WEB).
We also pray for wisdom and courage for you and your family as you support him. Galatians 6:1-2 tells us, "Brothers, even if a man is caught in some fault, you who are spiritual must restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; looking to yourself so that you also aren’t tempted. Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ." This is not a battle to be fought alone. Encourage your brother to seek godly counsel, accountability, and perhaps even professional help if needed. The church is called to be a place of healing and restoration, and we pray he would find a community of believers who can walk alongside him.
We must also address the heart behind this struggle. Often, addiction is a misguided attempt to fill a void that only God can satisfy. We pray that your brother would come to know the love of Christ in a deep and personal way—that he would experience the peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7) and the joy of the Lord, which is his strength (Nehemiah 8:10). Let him find his identity not in his struggles, but in who he is in Christ: chosen, forgiven, and beloved.
Lord God, we come before You now, lifting up this precious soul. We ask that You would break the chains of addiction in his life. Pour out Your Holy Spirit upon him, filling him with Your presence so that there is no room for anything else. Give him a hunger and thirst for righteousness (Matthew 5:6), and let him taste and see that You are good (Psalm 34:8). Surround him with godly influences—people who will speak life into him, pray for him, and hold him accountable. Give him the strength to resist temptation, the courage to seek help, and the faith to believe that victory is possible.
We also pray for his physical body, which may be weakened by this struggle. Heal any damage that has been done, Lord, and restore him to full health. Give him discipline in his habits, wisdom in his choices, and a renewed mind that is set on things above (Colossians 3:2). Let him experience the truth that "no temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it" (1 Corinthians 10:13 WEB).
Father, we thank You that You are a God who hears our prayers and moves on behalf of Your children. We trust that You are at work in this situation, even when we cannot see it. Give this family patience, perseverance, and unwavering faith as they wait on You. Let them see Your hand at work in mighty ways, and let this trial draw them all closer to You.
In the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we pray. Amen.
