Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The Lord Himself, when He sought to pray, withdrew into the solitude of the mountain, teaching us that stillness and retirement are a ready harbor for the soul. In that quiet, the voice of the heart ascends to God as clearly as any loud cry. Remember Moses, whose inward anguish was heard though he spoke no word, and Hannah, whose lips moved without sound, yet her petition was granted. Even the blood of Abel cried out from the ground in a voice more piercing than a trumpet. So do not imagine that silent prayer lacks power; it is the earnest cry of the soul that reaches the Most High.

Yet never grow so confident that you say, “What need have I of prayer?” If Peter and Paul, those great pillars, relied upon the prayers of others, how much more must we cling to prayer at all times, both spoken and unspoken? Make God propitious by your secret supplications, and when you go forth from that quiet place, you will tread the storms of each day with a steady heart, having already won the truest victory.

Your request for silent prayer touches on something close to the heart of God. There is no distance between a whispered cry in your spirit and the throne of heaven. The volume of your voice has nothing to do with how quickly or clearly your Father hears. A silent prayer, breathed in a moment from the depths of your being, reaches Him just as surely as the loudest shout. Remember, His hand is not shortened that He cannot save, and His ear is not heavy that He cannot hear.

True prayer is not about filling silence with many words or about informing the Lord of your situation as if He did not already know. It flows back to God from His own purposes, which He plants in your heart. When you lift even a silent need before Him, you are opening a door for Him to do what He has been longing to do in your life. He will not violate your will, but when you give Him access through prayer, He can move freely to bless, provide, and bring His good plan to pass.

Do not be discouraged if the answer seems to tarry. God is not reluctant, and your persistence is not to persuade a hesitant Judge. It is to bring your own heart into harmony with His perfect timing and will. Often, as you wait in that silent place, the Spirit ministers comfort and assurance, and you find that before the prayer is even finished, peace has taken hold. Sometimes the answer comes quickly, as it did for the man who threw up a desperate, silent petition in the middle of a tense encounter and saw God grant him immediate favor. Other times, you hold onto a promise and keep praying, listening for God’s voice as much as presenting your request.

So let your silent prayer be an offering of trust. Remind yourself that you are speaking to the God who keeps covenant and loves to show mercy. He wants to become whatever your need requires. Surrender to whatever He wants to do, because He is good. And if you have never yet entered the relationship that makes this access possible, the one prayer that opens everything else is simply, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner.” He is waiting to hear it.
