Salvation Of Households -- Scriptural And Historical Grounds

"BELIEVE in the LORD JESUS CHRIST, and YOU SHALL BE SAVED, you and YOUR ENTIRE HOUSEHOLD" Paul to the Philippian Jailer, Acts 16:31. See also John 4:54, the Centurion's Household, and The Households of Cornelius in Acts 10 and the Household of Stephanus in 1 Corinthians 1:16. Note there was one lamb for each household in Passover, Exodus 12:3.

God is into saving entire households, and this is especially seen during revival times. This is historically and Scripturally seen in the 1st Century Church, recorded in the Scriptures above, and witnessed by Jesus, Peter and Paul. I also witnessed this personally in mission trips to areas experiencing revival, and in hearing sermons from places in the midst of revival and by studying different revivals in Africa, Europe, North America and Asia. It is in God's heart to not only have His family together but our families together. May God grant salvation to the entire household of every reader and save the entire household of all who agree, as well as for my entire household, family and friends, in Jesus Name.

How does this doctrine fit in with 1 Corinthians 7 where the believing wife is instructed to stay with an unbelieving husband, so that by her example he might become a believer and be saved? If the household salvation doctrine is going to work it has to work in every instance.
The lamb covered the people in the house from the death angel, but they had to be in the house. The instructions were clear, they had to be in the house where the lamb's blood was on the doorpost, and they had to do certain things while in the house. In Exodus 11:15, a person eating enleavened bread during passover would be cut off from Israel. Each person was responsible for following the instructions.

I would say that each individual in a household still has to believe to be saved, a personal decision. I do see that blessings and favor will come onto a family or household members even if only one family member is saved. The blessings can be so overwhelming because of one family member that all family member will want salvation.
If I am saved, would that mean that my son, living on the other side of the world while following buddha, in a monastery, be saved? How about christian parents who have a practicing homosexual child?

Also, re 1 Corinthians 1:16. Paul was writing about baptizing the household of Stephanus. Paul was not saying that the household was saved because Stejphanus believed and was saved.

In Acts 10 it is related that Cornelius feared God with sll his household. The scripture does not say that the household of Cornelius was saved because Cornelius believed and was saved.

In John 5:54, the scripture passage refers to an official whose son was ill, and asked Jesus to come and heal him.Jesus spoke healing. The official returned home to a healed son. The healing took place at the same time Jesus spoke. Because of the healing, the official believed. It also says his household believed. The passage does not say that his household was saved because the official believed.

I am blessed to hear that you are ministering to others and seeing them accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour. You are a blessing. I speak favor and protection over your ministry, in the name of Jesus.

Firstly, The primary purpose of writing this is to be an encouragement for believers to believe and to give Scriptural aids in prayer, that The Kingdom of God may come to the Households of believers in particular in this case, with increased righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, Romans 14:17; and this writer is therefore looking for reasons to believe, not doubt. The Westminster Shorter Catechisms states, in Question. 99, "What rule hath God given for our direction in prayer? Answer. The whole word of God is of use to direct us in prayer; but the special rule of direction is that form of prayer which Christ taught his disciples, commonly called the Lord's prayer." This is an example of how the Word of God can direct us in praying for our households, since a Biblical, Historical and Modern Day precedent has been established, the chief cornerstone being the Biblical precedent.

Also, general principles don't have to work in every instance, for some, any or all the reasons given below, because an exception, by way of definition, does not invalidate a general principle. We see this with speed limits and people, ambulances and law enforcement heading to hospitals or to the scene of some occurrence. It is the same with Scripture, and the instances in itself are too numerous to list... But when you have promises as clear as the the Scriptures stated in the original post (Acts 16:31), and historical and modern day experiences coinciding, I would say we have to remember that the blessings in Deuteronomy are given to GENERATIONS of those that love Him (Deut 28). The Lord's very description of His own name in Ex 34:6-7 says he shows mercy to GENERATIONS of those that fear Him. We can't forget Paul's whole point in Romans 9-11 is that is isn't up to him who wills or runs, but God who shows mercy. That's the Sovereign Father we are coming alongside as friends with Christ, asking Him to save our family members on the basis of His Will which is His Word.

It's the exception not the rule that The child of an unbeliever believes, and that is why God gave Ezekiel the exception phrases in Ezekiel 18, that the children aren't punished for their parents sin but their own sin, and that the soul that sins will die. It is the sin of the son of the unbeliever that the unbelieving son of the unbeliever will die from, as well as the unbelieving son of the believer. But with parables as strong as "The Prodigal Son" and scripture and revival examples as strong as the ones above, why not pray according to that? I will concede the biblical Pater-familias had a strong sway over his household, but I contend the modern father's life, belief, prayers and intercessions, when using the authority of Jesus' Name, are still just as powerful and effective, James 5:16, they avail much. It is God's will that households come into the kingdom, and over the years, mine have pretty much one by one. I believe, that as Jesus said, of all the Father has given me I will loose not one. I don't look at their behavior when I pray to God, but his promises.

Have you ever heard the story of George Mueller who prayed for many people to come to salvation and one seemed not to have repented? That man repented at George Mueller's funeral! It is God's permissive will to "take you one from a city and two from a family, And I will bring you (them) to Zion," Jer 3:14, however God's perfect will is to for us to pray for our unsaved family members, ask His mercy on their lives, pray God brings witnesses into their paths and understand "Salvation Belongs To Our God" (Jonah, Revelation, John 6, Romans 9-11). Put our unsaved family members on our prayer lists, others' prayer lists, & web sites. Confess the Word over them, God wills none would perish, Peter says, that all would be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth, Paul says. That's enough proof for me. There is boat loads more, but I have people for which to pray. Connect with the sovereign God who sits in the heavens and does whatever he pleases (Ps 115:3). He pleases to save souls. Here are the testimonies and quotes from George Mueller and Hudson Taylor, from an exceptional link for inspiration and testimonies to intercession, below.

One day George Mueller began praying for five of his friends. After many months, one of them came to the Lord. Ten years later, two others were converted. It took 25 years before the fourth man was saved. Mueller persevered in prayer until his death for the fifth friend, and throughout those 52 years he never gave up hoping that he would accept Christ! His faith was rewarded, for soon after Mueller's funeral the last one was saved.

On persevering prayer: "I look at a stone cutter hammering away at a rock a hundred times without so much as a crack showing in it. Yet at the 101st blow it splits in two. I know it was not the one blow that did it, but all that had gone before."

"Eighteen-year-old Hudson Taylor wandered into his father's library and read a gospel tract. He couldn't shake off its message. Finally, falling to his knees, he accepted Christ as his Savior. Later, his mother, who had been away, returned home. When Hudson told her the good news, she said, "I already know. Ten days ago, the very date on which you tell me you read that tract, I spent the entire afternoon in prayer for you until the Lord assured me that my wayward son had been brought into the fold." Our Daily Bread, July 19, 1989. [Hudson Taylor (1832-1905) was a famous missionary in China. He was founder of the China Inland Mission which, at his death, included 205 mission stations with over 800 missionaries, and 125,000 Chinese Christians. He spent 51 years in China].

"(Quotation) It is the sin of the son of the unbeliever that the unbelieveing son of the unbeliever will die from, as well as the unbelieving son of the believer. "

James 1:6
But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind.

A doctrine must be built on solid ground. A doctrine built on exceptions is not a doctrine, but leaves a person being tossed around and indecisive of what to believe. The sun shows itself each morning, summer follows spring, rain falls down from the sky, a an apple falls down from a tree, a farmer plantd corn and reaps corn, an apple tree produces apples, a good tree produces good fruit, etc. Consistency in all of creation should lead us to believe there should be consistency in the Word of God. Consistency is essential to science, medicine, computers, electricity, cell phones, etc. Can the periodic table of elements be counted on to be consistent? Can the worldly components of what we see, hear, taste, smell, and feel be counted on to be consistent ? But, when it comes to the spititual realm and God's Word there is no consistency and exceptions are the rule?

I used to believe that God would make a person sick or diseased to "teach them something". I was wondering when my time was coming to be bedridden in a hospital or at home, to learn something. But Jesus was never sick, or diseased while He was "growing" into the fullness of who He is. He had things to learn, but did not have to get sick to learn something. Since Jesus walked in divine health, we should also be able to. But, being able to walk in divine health depends on the consistency of His Word. My faith can only grow stronger in something which is consistent. Otherwise, I can only have hope in something that is inconsistent.

When it comes to salvation for another person, we can pray that God will work in their life to bring them to salvation, but it is still up to the person making a free-will decision to confess Jesus as Lord that brings them salvation. God cannot save a person without their believing.
John 3:16New King James Version (NKJV)

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

Only those who believe are saved.

"And only God's sheep can believe, John 10, and faith comes from God's Word being preached, Romans 10, and only those the Father draws can come, John 6, and the Father draws the ones we pray about persistently, Matt 7:7, Luke 18, 1 John 5:14-15" Author Unknown.

It's really hard for me to comprehend getting rebuttals on this post. What are we arguing? Against household members being saved? That is under the category of something I can't understand. I guess it reminds me of when Jesus was grilled because he healed on the Sabbath. Doctrinally they were wrong because they grasped miracles as work and tried to limit the Son of God to their conception of a Sabbath, work, and missed the miracles right in front of them. I think it is possible you are doing the same thing. Start praying for someone like George Mueller did, and watch God box someone into a corner, let them lose a business or some other idol, have God give them a dream, let them hear a firery message, go to a gospel crusade, et cetera, and watch them start to be more open or suddenly believe.

God has a lot more sway in conversions than you concede. Remember the Apostle Paul was not actively seeking God's will on the Road to Damascus. My testimony is similar, and people were praying for me, just like the early church was praying for their enemies, as taught by Jesus, and public enemy number one was Saul of Tarsus.

I am going to continue to see God back up His will for household salvations by giving faith to people to believe and intercede for their lost ones, and letting them see the results of persistent, believing, fervent prayer. God bless all who read and pray for their households with conversions that build their faith for more family members being saved. Grant the conversions to become missionaries like Saul to Paul, and rock solid conversions, like Simon to Peter, and Jacob to Israel, in Jesus Name.

Do you believe in the Power of Jesus to save your house? Then claim it! Sometimes might does mean will in the Bible. Pray for them! Cast fear and doubt away from you and take no thought for it! Jesus has His way of making them believe when He wants them to believe, Trust Him! Many women have been beaten by their husbands who have become believers showing them nothing but love. Our Lord Jesus was severely beaten, severely tortured, humiliated and murdered in the worst possible way for us and what are we willing to put up with for our friends and family? Would you go to town knowing full well that you would endure the worst of the worst possible fate of death in this life to save your child, spouse or best friend? Good thing Jesus made that decision and did that for us! Thank You, Praise You Jesus for Saving my house! Glory to You Lord Jesus!!!

Why do you believe in Jesus? Are you someone special above the rest of us that believe because you know something all on your own? I don't know about your encounter with Jesus but I know because I see Him in my heart, I have met Jesus in many miraculous ways, I have seen Him in others, I have experienced miracles, I have been chastised and chastened by Him, I have tested His Word and I know and believe He is going to save all those that dwell under the shadow of my wings, my house, my wife, my children are all going to be saved and I will not allow doubt to be a part of my life. I have no faith on my own. My faith 100% belongs to Jesus! Thank You, Praise You Jesus for Your Faith, for Your Promises and for Your Strength! Glory to You Lord Jesus!!!

Give up your thoughts for your life friend and let the thoughts of Jesus flow through you, let Jesus take thought for you :)
