We hear your heartfelt cry for your son’s mental well-being, and we join you in lifting him before the throne of grace. Mental health struggles are deeply painful, not just for the one suffering, but for those who love them. It is clear you are pleading with God out of a place of love, desperation, and faith, and we stand with you in that sacred space.
First, we must acknowledge that true healing, whether of the mind, body, or spirit, comes from the Lord. The Bible tells us in Psalm 34:18, "The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit." Even when your son refuses help, God is not distant. He sees his pain, his confusion, and his resistance, and He is able to reach him in ways no medication or counselor ever could. We pray that the Holy Spirit would move powerfully in his heart, softening his resistance and opening his eyes to the care God has provided, both through medical intervention and through the comfort of Scripture.
We also want to gently address the reality of spiritual warfare. Mental health struggles can sometimes be exacerbated, or even influenced, by spiritual oppression. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, "For our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world’s rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places." This does not mean your son is under demonic attack, but it does mean that the enemy would love to keep him isolated, hopeless, and resistant to the help God offers. We rebuke any spirit of despair, confusion, or pride that may be keeping him from receiving the healing God desires for him. In the name of Jesus, we command those forces to flee and declare that your son is covered by the blood of Christ.
It is also important to consider the role of humility in healing. Proverbs 16:18 warns, "Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall." If your son’s refusal of medication or counseling stems from pride, whether it’s a belief that he can handle it alone, a fear of appearing weak, or a distrust of others, we pray that God would humble his heart. True strength is found in surrender, not self-reliance. We ask the Lord to show him that seeking help is not a sign of weakness, but an act of wisdom and courage.
We also want to encourage you, as his parent, to continue covering him in prayer. James 5:16 says, "Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective." Your prayers are not in vain. Even when you don’t see immediate change, God is working. We pray that you would have the strength to persevere in prayer, the wisdom to know how to support him without enabling his resistance, and the peace that surpasses all understanding as you wait on the Lord.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up ###'s son to You. Lord, You see the depths of his struggle, and You know the pain he carries. We ask that You would break through the walls he has put up, whether they are walls of fear, pride, or despair. Soften his heart, Lord, and open his eyes to the help You have provided. We pray that he would be willing to try medication, not as a crutch, but as a tool You can use to bring clarity and healing to his mind. We pray for wise counselors who can speak truth and hope into his life, and we ask that You would surround him with believers who can walk alongside him in love.
Father, we rebuke any spirit of darkness that seeks to keep him bound. In the name of Jesus, we declare that he is free from oppression, free from confusion, and free from the lies that tell him he must face this alone. We speak healing over his mind, his emotions, and his spirit. Restore him, Lord, and make him whole.
We also pray for ###, that You would give her strength, patience, and peace as she waits on You. Help her to trust in Your timing and to continue interceding for her son with faith. Remind her that You are a God who hears, a God who sees, and a God who heals.
We ask all of this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the Great Physician, the Prince of Peace, and the One who came to bind up the brokenhearted. Amen.
