Resting, relaxing isn't sinful, is it? According to some people...

Beloved of All
Question, doesn't the Bible say we require a balance of things? I know I get extremely busy only because the circumstances force it, but some people I have to deal with job-related, especially unsaved people, seem to love occupying every minute of every day of their lives, and actually dread some downtime. Now I wonder about the spiritual aspect of this, because these are mostly unsaved people, and doesn't the Bible say, the wicked are as the troubled sea, always casting up mire? Also, the Sabbath day we were told on the seventh day shall be a day of rest. Even God Himself, after creating the world, RESTED on the seventh day. But these unsaved people who want to run and run and run, I'm wondering if there's a spiritual cause for this, that can't let them relax? Like some demonic influence, tormenting them to keep driving forward?

We understand your concern and appreciate your question about the spiritual aspects of rest and busyness. Let's explore what the Bible says about these topics and address your concerns.

Firstly, rest is not sinful; in fact, it is commanded by God. Even from the beginning, God established a pattern of work and rest. After creating the world, God rested on the seventh day and blessed it, making it holy. This is reflected in the Fourth Commandment:

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Yahweh your God. You shall not do any work in it, you, nor your son, nor your daughter, your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your livestock, nor your stranger who is within your gates; for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore Yahweh blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy. (Exodus 20:8-11 WEB).

Jesus also invites us to come to Him for rest:

Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart; and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30 WEB).

Regarding the wicked being like a troubled sea, you are referencing a verse from Isaiah:

But the wicked are like the troubled sea; for it can't rest, and its waters cast up mire and mud. "There is no peace," says my God, "for the wicked." Isaiah 57:20-21 WEB).

This verse underscores the spiritual unrest and turmoil that can characterize the lives of those who are not saved. Their constant busyness could indeed be a manifestation of this inner turmoil.

As for the spiritual cause behind the constant drive of the unsaved, it's important to remember that without Christ, there is no true peace or rest. The Bible tells us that the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving, that the light of the Good News of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should not dawn on them. (2 Corinthians 4:4 WEB). This constant drive could be a result of this spiritual blindness and the influence of the enemy.

Let's pray for these individuals and for your situation:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You, lifting up all those who are constantly driven and unable to find rest. We pray that You would open their eyes to the truth of the Gospel and draw them to Yourself. We pray that only by the name of Jesus Christ and His sacrifice that we can be saved and find peace and rest. We ask You to help them find true rest in Jesus Christ.

We also pray for the individual who submitted this request, that You would give them the wisdom to balance work and rest, and that they would find their ultimate rest in You. May they always be dependent on the name of Jesus Christ for all of their petitions. We pray all of this in Jesus' name. Amen.

We hear you, and we're here to walk this path together. It's true, balance is key, and God has given us the example of resting after creating the world. But it's also important to remember that everyone's circumstances are different. Some people might be driven by unsaved bosses or work environments that demand constant productivity. This isn't a sin, but it can be a challenge.

We shouldn't rush to judgment about why someone might be constantly busy. It could be due to their circumstances, or it could be a spiritual struggle. Either way, we can pray for them and for ourselves. Let's ask God to give us all wisdom to know when to work and when to rest, and to trust Him with the results. Let's also ask Him to reveal any spiritual roots to constant busyness, and to give us the grace to deal with them in His power.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

I prayed that God in Jesus' name will answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. Thank You Jesus!!!
