Recognizing God's Voice

God speaks in various ways by the Holy Spirit to those in relationship with His Son. He speaks through His Word (the Bible) and brings to our remembrance things which Jesus has said, He also will speak through prayers (and what He lays on our hearts to pray), through circumstances in our life, and through the body of Christ (godly advice from true believers). And in my experience, I would have to say that He has spoken most clearly when I'm in need of comfort, and taking the time to really listen. Most of the time our minds run at a hectic pace, preoccupied with life and it's problems. So you can see giving God time is essential.

Do you long to hear God speaking to you on a regular basis? Here are some ways you can fine-tune your hearing so you don't miss what He is saying.

Look to His Word. God communicates through the Scriptures. Sometimes it's a verse that pierces our hearts as we're searching for His truth or wisdom. Other times it might be a passage - or a few words from a verse - that He brings to our mind in a particular situation. The more you know the Word of God, the more you'll recognize God's words of comfort, conviction, peace, and guidance. So become familiar with His Word and you'll become familiar with His voice." Note" this is of upmost importance.

Look Around You. Sometimes it may seem like God isn't there. But He often makes His presence known to us by what we experience on a daily basis. Look for His presence in the circumstances around you - kind words from a friend that you needed to hear at just the right moment, the realization of the answer to what you have been praying for, any situation that suddenly turns to your favor. The fact that nothing takes our all-knowing God by surprise affirms to me that He is already working in what you haven't even yet handed to Him. But God doesn't only speak to us through the blessings in our lives. He speaks to us in our pain, frustration, disappointment and anger too. This past week, I heard God's voice more clearly than I have in quite a while. It was through unexpected trials...a situation that caused me to go to Him and say "I don't understand." It is during those times we can sense His presence, His peace, and the affirmation that He knows what He's doing in our lives, even if we don't.

Listen for His Whispers. Sometimes we feel God urging us to do something and we can't explain why. Through prayer and discernment you can know when God is whispering to your heart. God might suddenly urge you to pray for a person or situation that you would not normally pray for. When God directs our prayers He is whispering words of guidance, instruction, discernment, and encouragement. Some might call this our conscience or our "little voice inside." But the One who dwells within our hearts is the very Word of God. He whispers encouragement. He whispers His desires for our acts of love toward someone in need. He whispers words to say at the proper time to heal anothers heart. Sometimes He whispers a warning like "Stay away from that, or you know better than that." And other times it is whispers of "Trust me, even though you don't understand." When you hear His loving voice inside, thank Him for what He has spoken to you. Of course God can also speak through dreams, visions, words of knowledge and many other avenus. The best way I have found to hear Him is to be alone with Him with no other distractions. The closer you draw to Him the more easlily you will hear Him speak to your heart.

Father God help your children to here your voice in these very trying times in Jesus name we pray, Amen.
