Proverbs, Chapter 3

3:1 My son, do not forget my law; But let your heart keep my commandments:

3:2 For length of days, and years of life, And peace, they will add to you.

3:3 Don't let kindness and truth forsake you: Bind them about your neck;

3:4 So you will find favor and good understanding In the sight of God and man.

3:5 Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, And lean not on your own understanding:

3:6 In all your ways acknowledge him, And he will direct your paths.

3:7 Don't be wise in your own eyes; Fear Yahweh, and depart from evil:

3:8 It will be health to your navel, And marrow to your bones.

3:9 Honor Yahweh with your substance, And with the first fruits of all your increase:

3:10 So your barns will be filled with corn, And your vats will overflow with new wine.

3:11 My son, don't despise the chastening of Yahweh; Neither be weary of his reproof:

3:12 For whom Yahweh loves he reproves; Even as a father the son in whom he delights.

3:13 Happy is [the] man who finds wisdom, And [the] man who gets understanding.

3:14 For the gaining of it is better than the gaining of silver, And its profit than fine gold.

3:15 She is more precious than rubies: And none of the things you can desire are to be compared to her.

3:16 Length of days is in her right hand; In her left hand are riches and honor.

3:17 Her ways are ways of pleasantness, And all her paths are peace.

3:18 She is a tree of life to those who lay hold on her: And happy is everyone who retains her.

3:19 Yahweh by wisdom founded the earth; By understanding he established the heavens.

3:20 By his knowledge the depths were broken up, And the skies drop down the dew.

3:21 My son, don't let them depart from your eyes; Keep sound wisdom and discretion:

3:22 So they will be life to your soul, And grace to your neck.

3:23 Then you will walk in your way securely, And your foot will not stumble.

3:24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid: Yes, you will lie down, and your sleep will be sweet.

3:25 Don't be afraid of sudden fear, Neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it comes:

3:26 For Yahweh will be your confidence, And will keep your foot from being taken.

3:27 Don't withhold good from them to whom it is due, When it is in the power of your hand to do it.

3:28 Don't say to your fellow man, Go, and come again, And tomorrow I will give; When you have it by you.

3:29 Don't devise evil against your fellow man Who dwells securely by you.

3:30 Don't strive with man without cause, If he has done you no harm.

3:31 Don't envy the man of violence, And choose none of his ways.

3:32 For the perverse is disgusting to Yahweh; But his friendship is with the upright.

3:33 The curse of Yahweh is in the house of the wicked; But he blesses the habitation of the righteous.

3:34 Surely he scoffs at the scoffers; But he gives grace to the lowly.

3:35 The wise will inherit glory; But shame will be the promotion of fools.

Proverb 3 begins with a reminder to sincerely observe and keep all of our divine instruction. If we keep with this instruction we shall received promised blessings. Peace and prosperity shall abound as a result. If we outwardly adorn ourselves and inwardly govern motives with integrity and desirable attributes, God will not forsake us. If we follow this divine instruction, we will find grace and kindness, united with a good understanding, of which both God and man will approve. Trust in the Lord with all your heart (the center of true wisdom, the wellspring), and not in yourself and your own understanding. This is another admonition against pride and self confidence. In verse 6, we are advised that by seeking His wise aid, He shall make our paths plain and obvious to us. We are told again to not trust our own wisdom, but His and to respectfully and humbly follow His law. Verse 8 is referring to our conduct being health to all organs of our body (navel is a source of nourishment for all developing organs of a child in the womb) and being marrow (flexible material found inside the bones) to the bones (framework of the body). True virtue and devotion promotes physical health. Verses 9 and 10 can be summarized in that the generous soul shall be made fat; and he that watered, shall also be watered.

Verse 11 makes us consider the true intent of the afflictions we suffer. They do not contradict the assertion of the blessed state of the virtuous. Verse 12 allows us to understand that the Lord will receive and reconcile with us, even after we receive his discipline for our wrongdoings.

Happy is the man who reaches for and seeks to obtain wisdom that he draws out by understanding. Verses 14 and 15 refer to this search being carried out.

Verses 16 and 17 confirm that wisdom embodied will bring about the best blessings. Her ways are the ways in which she directs us. She is the one whose fruit preserves life, gives all that makes living a blessing. The place of wisdom in the expense of creation and wisdom praises it to men, who, in comparison to their limited powers, may possess this priceless quality, and are therefore encouraged by the heavenly example of its use, to pursue its possession.

Verse 21 advises we not depart from these words of instruction and to keep close to His comprehensive and complete wisdom. Verses 22 – 24 assign reasons in value for joy and adornment, guidance and support in danger, both while walking and in slumber. We shall not be afraid of any sudden or overlooked evil or the despair it causes. We should confident that we are in God’s favor and in they confidence, He is our source of strength.

Verses 27 and 28 instruct us to promptly fulfill all our obligations in regard to justice and charity. Do not procrastinate, make excuses or put off thy neighbor in need. We are instructed not to abuse sureness and to attempt to avoid legal action.

Verse 31 tells us not desire the ways and possessions of a man of mischief. The destiny of the successful evildoers warns against any envy of the oppressor. The last verses of Proverb 3 are regarding the reasons for this warning. The secret of the righteous is in their communion. The curse of the wicked abides with them and shall be manifested. There will be retribution of sinners. The wise shall inherit their promised portion of honor and glory, but disgrace will be the elevations of fools.

In summary, Proverb 3 is the study of truth celebrated. God is to be feared, trusted and honored. We are to exhibit familial submission to Him in His wise discipline for our wrongdoings. The superiority of wisdom is promoted and illustrated by its place in the divine directions. Devotion enforced by a distinction of the destiny of the righteous and the wicked.

Trust in the Lord! Honoring fearing the Lord!

Thanks for sharing this chapter. I understand that we must rely and trust upon God's wisdom and not our own. God knoweth everything, and I've really learn to trust and have faith in him. I really glad you explained the verses line by line. It made me understand much better. Thanks.

This chapter speaks to so many of us that are crying out for financial assistance and peace. It is important to remember that these precepts speak not only to the health of the soul, but to the health of the body. We must honor God with our wealth and our health; and those that do good with what they have, shall have more to do more good with. However, if the Lord should allow Satan to attack us, take away our wealth and health; let us not forget that this is for our good. God started with a plan of delivery for us and when the season has passed, there will be full restoration. We must not faint under an affliction, be it ever so heavy and long, not fall into despair, or use wrong means for relief. The father corrects the son whom he loves, because he loves him, and desires that he may be wise and good. God allows afflictions, not to hurt us but by the grace of God, they promote our holiness.

3.12 For whom the Lord loves He reproves. What a wonderful thought of a true father who loves his children. We certainly do not want our children to get hurt. So many times we have to reprove them and correct their ways of doing things. Jesus loves us with His whole heart and He does not want any of His dear children to go astray So, he send us trouble in our lives and correct our ways to consider what we are really doing for Him. Are we visiting the sick in the hospitals? Are we witnessing to the unbelievers like He said to be a WITNESSES UNTO THE END OF THE WORLD.? Dear Jesus please help us to be all you wants us to be. Amen

It will be a health to your navel. Jesus is the healer of all our pain and sorrow. As we see this days people are having all kinds of problems in their marriage, in the schools, in the home environment even in churches. God wants to be a healing power in all your pain and sorrow. Also there are all kinds of illness that come from sin and unrighteousness.  3.8 It will be a health to your navel and marrow to your bones. How wonderful to know that God even thinks about the marrow of our bones. Have you ever heard people saying.. how is the marrow of your bone?  Never.  But God knows everything and wants to heal all your illness, pain and sorrow. How wonderful a God we have. Dont we?
