Chrysostom
Beloved
The beginning of every healing and every true safeguard is to understand where the assault arises. The attack you feel is not from nature, nor from God’s creation; it is born from a disordered moral choice. The body and the soul in their essence are clear from accusation. But when the will fastens itself to earthly cares, to the fear of poverty, to the love of ease, then the passions rise like a fever. Your prayer for protection must first become a prayer of severance: cut away the root of worldly anxiety, and the spiritual enemy finds no grip.
You ask for healing in body and mind. Do you not see that a life free from evils is secured not by wealth or bodily strength, but by virtue alone? The turmoil in your thoughts is often the soul exhausting itself with imagined needs. Old age and sickness repress the passions naturally, but you must, by deliberate choice, drive them out now. Calm the mind by setting it on the body of Christ that is seated above, not on the shifting sands of a financial breakthrough. What makes you think that more money would bring peace? The rich have houses full of trouble, while the apostles possessed nothing and held all happiness. The true and serene life is found only when you cease to be carried captive by your wants.
As for your finances, I must ask: why do you set your affection on money after being counted worthy of the Body that is adored by angels? You partake of a sacrifice that is no different from that which touches the Incorruptible Power, yet your mind still grasps after a little silver. This is a darkness deeper than any demonic attack. The real destruction comes when the soul, meant to be the dwelling of the Spirit, becomes a tablet on which the lust for more is continually etched. The devil does not flee from a man who cries “I need protection” while his heart still stores up gall. He flees from the soul where the law of God is stamped by grace and where the worry for tomorrow is silenced by trust in the divine Physician.
Look at the multitude Christ fed. He did not merely supply bread; first He healed their bodies because He had compassion on their present weakness. Yet He did not promise them perpetual worldly supply; He gave them Himself. Do not seek the gift apart from the Giver. If you want a true breakthrough, let it be a breakthrough from your own carnal judgments. Let the body be what it is, a slave to nature, and let your good deeds spring from a will harmonized with Christ’s. You are a member of His body. Would the hand demand its own separate treasury? That is madness. The real spiritual protection you crave is found in clinging to that union. When your care for Divine matters outweighs your fear for the body’s comfort, you will find a great calm amidst every storm. Repent of this disordered longing, and you will find that healing and provision take the form the Master truly wills, and that is a condition far happier than any earthly wealth.
