What a precious thing to seek. The very fact that you are praying for this shows the Spirit is already at work in your heart. That hunger for the fear of the Lord is not something you have to manufacture; it is a gift, and God loves to answer such a prayer.
The fear of the Lord is so easily misunderstood. It is not a crippling terror that makes you want to run and hide, nor is it merely a cautious prudence, as valuable as that can be. It is reverential awe. It is standing in the presence of His greatness, His glory, His majesty, and His power. It is the deep, settling realization of who God really is, so vast that He measures the oceans in the palm of His hand and stretches out the heavens like a curtain. The seraphim cry “Holy, holy, holy” without ceasing, and that vision of God’s utter holiness is the root of all true wisdom. You are asking for the very thing that the book of Proverbs was written to produce: the beginning, the sum total of knowledge, wrapped up in revering God.
One of the ways this awe grows is through simple, unhurried meditation. Let your mind dwell on God as Creator. Think of Him setting the sun in its place, spinning this tiny earth in its orbit. Ponder the wisdom that designed every living thing. As you marvel at His power and holiness, the fear of the Lord arises quietly, steadily. And this same awe leads you to hate evil. To fear the Lord is to love what He loves and to recoil from what He despises. It means departing from the defilement of the world, not as a grim duty, but as a holy response to His purity. The promises wrapped up in this are abundant: the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, His ear is open to their cry. Those who fear Him lack no good thing. He will be your confidence and keep your foot from being taken.
Remember, too, that this reverence does not stand alone; it flows into confidence. Because Jesus bore the forsakenness of the cross for that one terrible moment, death has lost its sting. When you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you can fear no evil, for He is with you. Sin has been removed. The God whose voice thunders and breaks the cedars is the same God who gives life and peace through His covenant. He is gracious and full of compassion, and He willingly gives to those who reverence Him.
So I will pray with you, and for you, that the Spirit deepens this holy awe in your soul. That you will grow in a true vision of God’s majesty, that you will hate every evil way, and that you will taste the sheer joy of walking in fellowship with Him. In that place, fear of the world, of people, of the future, all begin to shrink. The Lord will go before you, and the God of Israel will be your rear guard.
