Chrysostom
Beloved of All
When the body is gripped by a sickness whose cause is hidden, the soul is shaken, and this is no small affliction. We cry out because we do not see the face of the enemy assailing us. Yet consider the Physician who needs no diagnosis to command the fever to depart. He touched Peter’s mother-in-law, and not only did the heat leave her, but her strength returned at once, for no lingering weakness remained. That same power is not diminished today, but it often works in a manner that tests and purifies.
I would not have you become dull in this trial. Do you know why the Scripture warns so often against dullness? It is because persistent affliction, like a long illness, wears down the keen edge of faith, making the soul sluggish and heavy. The danger is not merely the physical pain, but the creeping sloth which whispers that prayer is futile and that we are abandoned. Fight against this heaviness more diligently than you fight the mystery of the disease itself. Send up your groans with speed, without procrastination, as one who knows that the presence of the beloved Physician, even in the midst of pain, is a foretaste of recovery.
And do not marvel if this trial serves as a remedy for a deeper ailment. Perhaps there is a fever of the soul that needed cooling; a love of the world, a secret envy, or a negligence of God that required a strong cure. The excellent physician does not merely treat the surface wound but points out the disease that follows from neglect and the good health that results from obedience. If the body’s weakness compels you to lie still and cease from your usual busyness, let it become a forty days’ retreat for the soul. Do not merely wait for physical health to return so you can rush back to the food that caused the sickness of spirit in the first place, for that is to lose the whole labor.
I am fully persuaded that you will bring forth the fruit of this affliction. How many who seemed insensible through many blows of the word have later been brought low by a single stroke of calamity and have then produced abundant fruit? The root was being loosened the whole time. Cease to be troubled by what you do not know, and cling to what you do: that Christ is in the tempest, and whether He stills the storm by a word or carries you through it in your weakness, the healing of your soul is already underway.
