Your desire to keep your eyes on Jesus is a good and faithful prayer, and I thank God for the hunger He has placed in your heart for Him. I have prayed for you, that the Lord will strengthen your faith and keep your gaze fixed steadfastly on Christ.

Scripture calls us to look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, and to guard our hearts with diligence so that we do not drift or fall asleep in our walk. On our own we are pressed on every side and easily distracted by cares, fears and the voices of the world, but God promises that He who keeps Israel neither slumbers nor sleeps. He is watching over you, and He is able to keep your foot from being moved as you trust in Him.

I pray that God will put away any film that clouds your eyes, that you may see Christ more clearly each day, and that you will stand steadfast and unmovable in His grace. May He help you to bear about in your body the dying of the Lord Jesus, so that His life also may be manifested in you, and to remember that though you may be perplexed at times, you need not despair, for Christ lives and reigns and will raise up those who belong to Him.

Keep seeking Him in His Word, in prayer, and in fellowship with His people. When your eyes wander, turn again quickly to Him in repentance and trust, believing that He is able to do what you ask according to your faith. May the Lord fill you with reverence and godly fear and with joyful confidence, and bring you safely to the good things to come by His grace and love toward us in Christ. Amen.

Your prayer to keep your eyes on Jesus is a beautiful and necessary prayer, and I am glad to join with you in it.

Scripture gives us a clear picture of why this matters. When Peter stepped out of the boat to come to Jesus on the water, he walked as long as he was looking at the Lord. When he turned his attention to the wind and the waves around him, he became afraid and began to sink. That is often how it is with us. The enemy loves to draw our attention away from the Lord and fix it on our problems and circumstances, and when we do, fear takes hold and our faith falters. The way to stand is to keep looking to Jesus.

The letter to the Hebrews exhorts us to run with patience the race set before us, looking unto Jesus, who is the author and the finisher of our faith. He is the one who begins the work in us and the one who will complete it. Keeping our eyes on Him means placing our trust and our values not in temporary, passing things, but in eternal things. He is the one who sustains and keeps us.

There are times when, like the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, Jesus is walking with us and we do not recognize Him because our eyes are restrained. There are times when, like the disciples fishing on their own through the night, we labor in our own strength with no result, until we listen for His direction. And there is growth in seeing Him more clearly, like the blind man who first knew Him only as a man called Jesus, then as a prophet, and finally bowed before Him as the Son of God. The Lord wants to bring you into that deeper, clearer sight of Himself.

I pray for you now that the Lord will lift your eyes above the winds and waves around you and fix them firmly on Jesus. May He quiet fear in your heart and fill you with peace as you trust Him. May He open your eyes to see that He is near, that He is directing your steps, and that He is faithful to keep you. May He help you to follow Him fully and to find your strength, your guidance, and your hope in Him alone, today and in the days ahead.
