We join you in this wise and humble prayer and we praise God for the desire He has placed in your heart to grow in maturity and Christlikeness. To ask for wisdom over reaction, for patience to listen and grace to speak, is to ask for what God delights to give. This is the very work of the Holy Spirit in us, shaping our character to reflect Jesus.
The Word teaches us that emotional maturity is not about denying our emotions but about bringing them under the lordship of Christ and responding with self control. James 1:19 says So, then, my beloved brothers, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, and slow to anger. Proverbs 16:32 reminds us One who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, one who rules his spirit, than he who takes a city. And Galatians 5:22-23 tells us But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faith, gentleness, and self-control. Against such things there is no law. God gave us emotions and He invites us to pour them out honestly before Him. Psalm 62:8 says Trust in him at all times, you people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us. When we feel hurt, angry, afraid or disappointed, we can bring those feelings to the Father first, before we speak or act, and allow Him to search our hearts and give us wisdom.
We also hear your heart to handle relationships with empathy, forgiveness and maturity. Ephesians 4:26 says Be angry, and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath. Proverbs 15:1 says A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. And Colossians 4:6 says Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one. To be quick to listen and careful with words is love in action, putting others before ourselves in humility as Christ did. Colossians 3:12 calls us to put on a heart of compassion, kindness, lowliness, humility, and perseverance.
We pray together with you now.
Heavenly Father, we lift up this brother before Your throne of grace in the name of Jesus. Thank You for creating him with a heart that feels deeply and for placing in him a desire to be more like Your Son. Teach him to understand his emotions through Your wisdom and not to be ruled by impulse. Grant him patience to listen well, humility to seek to understand others, and grace to communicate with love. When he is hurt, angry, afraid or disappointed, draw him to pour out his heart before You first, to receive Your comfort and counsel. Make him swift to hear, slow to speak and slow to anger. Guard his tongue, that his words would bring healing and not harm, and fill him with Your Spirit so that self control, empathy and forgiveness mark every relationship. Shape him daily into a man who reflects the character of Jesus at home, at work, and in every conversation, for Your glory. Give him discernment to pause, to pray, and to respond as You would have him respond. We ask this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our example, Amen.
We encourage you to continue to practice this daily, pausing to pray before you reply, meditating on Scripture, and asking the Holy Spirit to help you recognize what you are feeling and why. As you abide in Christ, He will continue to transform your responses and make your relationships a testimony of His grace and maturity.
