Prayer for commitment to god

I am lacking in understanding in why it is good not to procrastinate in repenting to god. I repented from lust for ### days and received some blessings but then some days I don’t feel blessed anymore so I relapse. Why should I commit my whole life to god instead of repenting next year? I’m an impulsive person and don’t like delayed gratification. Lord forgive me, I do not love you enough to follow you and your commandments for my whole life. Dear brothers and sisters, please pray for me and help me. In the name of Jesus, please let god’s wrath not befall me and help clear up my lack of understanding

We hear your honesty and humility before the Lord and we thank you for sharing this struggle so openly with us. We see your heart wants to understand and to be committed, even as you confess that you do not love God enough to follow Him and that you struggle with impulsiveness and wanting immediate gratification. We want to walk with you in truth and grace and pray with you for understanding and strength.

We must lovingly rebuke the idea that it is safe or wise to delay repentance until next year. Scripture warns us very clearly not to presume upon tomorrow. Now is the accepted time, behold, now is the day of salvation 2 Corinthians 6:2 and Today if you will hear his voice, do not harden your hearts Hebrews 3:15. We do not know what will happen tomorrow, for what is your life For you are a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away James 4:14 and Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring forth Proverbs 27:1. God now commands all people everywhere to repent Acts 17:30 and it is appointed for men to die once, and after this, judgment Hebrews 9:27. To delay is to harden the heart, to presume upon God's patience, and to risk that His wrath remains upon us, for He who believes in the Son has eternal life. He who disobeys the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God remains on him John 3:36. We urge you to seek Yahweh while he may be found, call on him while he is near Isaiah 55:6. Next year is never promised.

We also want to help clear up your lack of understanding about blessings and feelings. You shared that you repented from lust for a number of days and received some blessings but then when you did not feel blessed you relapsed. We understand that struggle. Feelings come and go but God and His truth do not change. His blessing is not always a feeling of happiness. His greatest blessing is forgiveness, cleansing, and nearness to Him. If we walk by feelings we will always be unstable. We are called to walk by faith. Lust itself, whether in thought, pornography, or fornication which is any sexual activity outside of marriage between one man and one woman, is sin that wars against the soul and we are commanded to flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body 1 Corinthians 6:18 and we are told to flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace 2 Timothy 2:22. When we treat repentance as a transaction to get a feeling of blessing, we miss that true repentance is a turning of the whole life to God because He is worthy and because sin brings death. The wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord Romans 6:23.

You said you are impulsive and do not like delayed gratification. The Bible teaches that sin offers immediate pleasure but brings long term sorrow, while obedience may require self denial now but brings lasting joy. Do not be deceived. God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. For he who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life Galatians 6:7-8. No chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous, yet afterward it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness Hebrews 12:11. What fruit then did you have at that time in the things of which you are now ashamed For the end of those things is death Romans 6:21. To commit your whole life to God is not to lose joy but to find it, for in His presence is fullness of joy. You do not commit for a few days to test if God will bless you, you commit because He first loved you and gave His Son to save you, and love then learns obedience. If you love me, keep my commandments John 14:15 and For this is loving God, that we keep his commandments. His commandments are not grievous 1 John 5:3. Love grows as we abide in Him, not before we obey Him.

We rejoice that you prayed in the name of Jesus, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12 and no one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6. It is only through faith in Jesus Christ, His death and resurrection for our sins, that we have access to God and power over sin.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift up our brother to You and thank You for his honest confession. Lord forgive him for lust and for every sin, cleanse him by the blood of Jesus and create in him a clean heart. Help him to understand that You are holy and that Your wrath is real but Your mercy is greater for all who truly repent and believe. Give him grace not to delay but to turn to You fully today with his whole life. Deliver him from impulsiveness and grant him the fruit of self control Galatians 5:22-23. Teach him to present his body as a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to You Romans 12:1. When feelings fade and temptation comes, remind him that You are near and that Your grace is sufficient. Help him to flee temptation, to fill his mind with Your Word, to seek fellowship and accountability, and to pursue purity and holiness. Help him to love You more each day as he walks in obedience, and let him know the lasting joy of following You rather than the fleeting pleasure of sin. Keep him from the path that leads to destruction and establish his steps in Your way. We ask that Your wrath would not befall him but that he would rest under Your mercy and grow in commitment for his whole life. In the name of Jesus Christ we pray, amen.

We hear how honestly you are wrestling with this, and we are grateful you brought it to us so plainly. Wanting to follow God while also feeling pulled toward what is immediate and impulsive is a hard place to be, and admitting "I do not love you enough" is itself an honest prayer God hears.

One thing that has helped others is seeing that repentance is less about feeling sorry enough to earn a blessing, and more about changing direction. When we wait to turn until next year, we are actually practicing staying in the same direction for another year. That practice makes the pull stronger, not weaker, and it keeps us living off how we feel day to day. Feelings of being blessed will naturally go up and down, but a whole-life commitment is about who we are becoming, not about chasing a steady feeling.

You mentioned being impulsive and struggling with delayed gratification. It makes sense that lust feels so powerful then, because it promises something right now and asks you to put God off until later.

A simple next step that many find steadying is to shorten the gap between temptation and turning. When the urge comes, instead of debating it, pause to pray immediately and honestly, and if you can, bring one trusted, mature believer into your struggle for regular check-ins and accountability. Having someone who knows your goal and can walk with you weekly makes impulse less lonely.

Father, we bring our brother before You in Jesus' name. Forgive him, quiet his fear of Your wrath with Your mercy, and give him clearer understanding and a growing love for You. Strengthen him to turn quickly, to walk in purity, and to trust You with his whole life one day at a time. Amen.

There is great mercy in your honesty before God, and it is good that you have brought this struggle into the light. You ask why you should not put off repentance till next year, and why you should give your whole life to God rather than taste a little longer the fleeting pleasure of lust. Hear then what the Scripture teaches.

You have known something of repentance for a season and have seen some blessing, and then when feeling faded you have fallen again. This shows the difference between a carnal repentance and that repentance unto life which is the gift of God. A carnal repentance is of the flesh, after the manner of our sinful nature. It may make a man tremble for a time and feel some complacency toward the Word, and yet not have repentance unto life. It does not give God glory, it does not lead the soul out of self to Christ only, and it does not endure. True repentance, that which the Holy Spirit works in the renewed heart, brings spiritual life with it to a dead spirit and ensures eternal life to everyone who possesses it. It is not a preparation for grace, it is the first result of grace working within the soul.

You must not think of repentance as a price you pay to purchase blessings from God, nor measure its truth by whether you feel blessed on any given day. Feelings come and go, but Christ remains. Repentance which makes you weep and abhor your past life because of the love of Christ which has pardoned it is the right repentance. It looks out of self to Christ and to Christ only, and it makes a rainbow with tears of grief for sin and glances of hope at His great finished work.

For this reason you must not procrastinate. The goodness of God is meant to lead you to repentance now, not to give you leave to sin a little longer. That goodness is drawing you, not driving you with a whip, and to presume upon it by saying I will repent next year is to turn His mercy into an excuse for delay. You do not know that you will have next year. Moreover delay hardens the heart. When a man makes promises to God and then breaks them, his life becomes a continued provoking of God by broken covenants, an elaborate lie lived before Him. To say I will follow Christ tomorrow while choosing lust today corrupts the whole matter, for it withholds from God the glory that true repentance gives Him.

You say you are impulsive and do not like delayed gratification, and that you do not love God enough to follow Him all your days. This is true of us all by nature, and it is the very reason you must not trust your own love or strength. If Christ is first and last and midst and everything to you, He will give you repentance, He will give you a heart of flesh and a sensitive conscience and a cleansed life. Repentance and faith are inseparable and they live as long as each other. Repentance is not a bitter operation to be gotten through at the beginning and then done with. It lives as long as faith lives. One of old said he should drop a tear as he went through the gates of heaven to think that he could repent no more, so sweet is sister repentance as company to the believer. No one ever worshipped God with his whole heart unless he worshipped Him with a broken heart, and there never was a heart truly broken that did not thereby become a whole heart. To give God your whole life is not to lose joy but to find it, for the divided heart is never whole.

You fear the wrath of God, and rightly, for wrath abides upon all who remain in sin. But hear the whole machinery of salvation. God has provided salvation in Christ Jesus, He sends the preacher to tell of it, men hear, they believe and salvation is theirs. You have not to make a righteousness, you have to accept the one that is made for you. Whoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved, and that shall be saved reaches a very long way, even throughout the eternal ages to come. Christ has borne wrath for sinners who trust Him.

Therefore do not wait. Call upon His name today. Ask Him even now to grant you that repentance unto life which you cannot work in yourself. Confess that your lust is sin before Him, turn from it not to earn His favor but because His goodness has already been so great to you in sparing you and in giving Christ to die for such as you. Seek grace to walk in purity, knowing that sex and all its joys belong within the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman in marriage, and outside it they bring wounding to soul and body.

We do pray for you, that God would grant you repentance that needs not to be repented of, that He would give you faith to look to Jesus only, that He would keep you from presuming on tomorrow and would lead you by His goodness to a settled surrender to holiness, happiness and everlasting life. May He make you to hate the sin that once enticed you and to love the Savior who alone can keep you, and may you find that to follow Him wholly, not for a season but for all your days, is not delayed gratification but present mercy and eternal gain.
