I have talked to as many doctors as possible and it doesn't appear that Alex would be saved by surgery. In order to spare our son of agony and suffering we have reluctantly decided to terminate the pregnancy. His HLHS (hypoplastic left heart syndrome) is too severe. The prediction is that he will die either before the first operation or shortly after it.
This has been such a long road. I've suffered many losses. None to this extreme. We thought all was well after all the bed rest and the first trimester screening cam back with such good numbers. We are completely devastated. We hope that we will have the strength to try again in another year. I plan to have an amnio done to see what else can be determined about our genetics and will send Alex's remains to pathology to determine his exact genetic make up. This will help us determine if we are carriers for a disease that would hinder a developing baby in the future. We do not ever want to make a decision like this again. We hope the results will show us our next step.
I will be admitted to the hospital on Tuesday for labor induction. I will most likely deliver Alex within 6 hours. I plan to be there at least 24 hours.
Please keep him and us in your thoughts as this is the most terrible thing I feel a parent and child can go through. We love Alex and we were so terribly excited about his upcoming arrival in Jan.
