Romans 14

The Weak and the Strong

14 Accept the one whose faith is weak, without quarreling over disputable matters. 2 One person’s faith allows them to eat anything, but another, whose faith is weak, eats only vegetables. 3 The one who eats everything must not treat with contempt the one who does not, and the one who does not eat everything must not judge the one who does, for God has accepted them. 4 Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To their own master, servants stand or fall. And they will stand, for the Lord is able to make them stand.

5 One person considers one day more sacred than another; another considers every day alike. Each of them should be fully convinced in their own mind. 6 Whoever regards one day as special does so to the Lord. Whoever eats meat does so to the Lord, for they give thanks to God; and whoever abstains does so to the Lord and gives thanks to God. 7 For none of us lives for ourselves alone, and none of us dies for ourselves alone. 8 If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. 9 For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be the Lord of both the dead and the living.

10 You, then, why do you judge your brother or sister[a]? Or why do you treat them with contempt? For we will all stand before God’s judgment seat. 11 It is written:

“‘As surely as I live,’ says the Lord,
‘every knee will bow before me;
every tongue will acknowledge God.’”[b]
12 So then, each of us will give an account of ourselves to God.

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister. 14 I am convinced, being fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself. But if anyone regards something as unclean, then for that person it is unclean. 15 If your brother or sister is distressed because of what you eat, you are no longer acting in love. Do not by your eating destroy someone for whom Christ died. 16 Therefore do not let what you know is good be spoken of as evil. 17 For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit, 18 because anyone who serves Christ in this way is pleasing to God and receives human approval.

19 Let us therefore make every effort to do what leads to peace and to mutual edification. 20 Do not destroy the work of God for the sake of food. All food is clean, but it is wrong for a person to eat anything that causes someone else to stumble. 21 It is better not to eat meat or drink wine or to do anything else that will cause your brother or sister to fall.

22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the one who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23 But whoever has doubts is condemned if they eat, because their eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin.[c]

We rejoice with you in hearing of your friend’s recovery and return to work—what a mighty testimony of God’s healing power and provision! It is indeed a reason to lift our voices in praise, for the Lord has been faithful in sustaining him through this trial. Yet we also recognize that his journey is not yet complete, as he still faces physical limitations and the burden of being the sole provider for his family. Let us turn to Scripture to anchor our prayers and encouragement for him and his household.

The Apostle Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, *"He has said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Most gladly therefore I will rather glory in my weaknesses, that the power of Christ may rest on me. Therefore I take pleasure in weaknesses, in injuries, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses, for Christ’s sake. For when I am weak, then am I strong."* Your friend’s current struggle is an opportunity for Christ’s strength to be perfected in his weakness. Though he must pace himself and endure discomfort, we pray the Lord will grant him supernatural endurance, wisdom in managing his workload, and a deep assurance that his worth is not in his productivity but in Christ alone.

We are also mindful of the pressure he carries as the sole earner for his family. Jesus teaches us in Matthew 6:31-33, *"Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’ ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well."* Let us pray that your friend and his family would fix their eyes on the Lord’s provision rather than their circumstances. May they experience the peace that comes from trusting in Him, knowing that He who feeds the birds and clothes the lilies will surely care for them.

Yet we must also address something vital: in your request, there is no mention of the name of Jesus Christ, through whom all our prayers must be offered. Scripture is clear that there is no other name under heaven by which we are saved or through which we can approach the Father. Acts 4:12 declares, *"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!"* Similarly, John 14:6 records Jesus’ own words: *"I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me."* If your friend does not yet know Christ as his Savior, we urge you to share the Gospel with him—that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us (Romans 5:8), and by repenting of our sins and believing in Him, we are granted eternal life (John 3:16). Salvation is the greatest healing any of us can receive, and it is our prayer that your friend and his family would surrender their lives to Jesus if they have not already.

Now, let us lift your friend before the throne of grace together:

*"Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for the progress You have granted our brother in his recovery. Lord, You alone are the Great Physician, and we ask that You continue to restore his body, granting him strength beyond his own. Touch the areas where pain lingers, and may Your healing power flow through him so that he can work without undue strain. Give him wisdom to know when to rest and when to push forward, and surround him with supervisors and colleagues who show him kindness and patience.

Father, we also lift up the burden he carries as the provider for his family. You see their needs before they even ask, and You own the cattle on a thousand hills (Psalm 50:10). Provide for them in ways that surpass their expectations. Open doors for additional income if it is Your will, and guard their hearts against fear or anxiety. May they seek first Your Kingdom, trusting that You will add all things to them as they walk in faith.

Lord, we pray too for their spiritual well-being. If any in this family do not yet know You, we ask that You draw them to Yourself. Soften their hearts to receive the truth of the Gospel, that Jesus Christ is the only way to salvation and eternal life. Fill their home with Your peace, Your joy, and Your presence.

We rebuked any spirit of infirmity or financial lack that would seek to oppress this family, and we declare that no weapon formed against them shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Let Your favor rest upon them, and may they testify of Your goodness in every area of their lives.

We ask all these things in the mighty and matchless name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen."*

We encourage you to continue standing in the gap for your friend and his family. Share Scripture with them, remind them of God’s promises, and if the opportunity arises, boldly proclaim the Gospel to them. Let them know that their hope is not in complete physical healing alone but in the One who holds their future. Keep us updated on his progress, and may the Lord grant you all perseverance, faith, and joy as you walk this path together.

We're here for your friend too, just like you are. It's such a relief to hear that he's back at work, isn't it? Let's continue to lift him up in prayer, asking God to grant him the strength and endurance he needs to keep going. We'll also keep praying for his family, that they would find peace and provision in God's care.

We can't help but think about how Jesus carried his own cross, yet he was still able to say, "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest" (Matthew 11:28-29). Let's pray that your friend would find that same rest in Jesus, knowing that he's carrying them all.

Lord, we ask that you would be close to your servant right now. Give him the strength he needs to face each day, and help him to trust in you, even when the pain is hard to bear. We also pray for his family, that they would find comfort and peace in knowing that you are their provider. Help them to trust in your goodness, even in the midst of uncertainty.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

Lord, we pray for this prayer and family for blessings healing and salvation. Heal and bless. May their lives be a praise and glory unto thee.
Come to the Lord's holy presence. Seek him with all your heart. Cling to his Word and meditate on it moment by moment by positive thoughts and joy in the heart (James 1:2-4), knowing that the Lord is good and to him be all the praise. Seek first God's kingdom and his righteousness (Matthew 6:33). Even though life may feel hard, the Lord's hand will be on you, and he will answer in his time. I am praying for you. Amen.
