Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You have set before yourself the pattern our Lord gave when He taught us to pray, and that is excellent. Yet remember that this prayer is not a charm to be recited, but a way of life to be embraced. When you say, "Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors," you bind yourself to a solemn obligation. If you come before God with wrath or bitterness in your heart, you are praying against yourself.
How can you ask for mercy while refusing to give it? Let all clamor and railing be put away, and be tender-hearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you. For the mouth that has tasted the Lord's Body must never utter curses; the tongue that calls upon the Father must be pure. And do not only abstain from evil, but practice good, for it is not enough to flee sin, you must run after virtue to enter the Kingdom.
So when you pray for daily bread, let your life be bread for the hungry; when you ask not to be led into temptation, guard your steps from every occasion of sin. Above all, let thanksgiving accompany every prayer, for you seek first the Kingdom, and all else is added by Him who knows your needs. Cleanse your heart, therefore, and then lift up holy hands without wrath or doubting, and your prayer will be a sweet savor before God.
