Good and Faithful Servant
A 21-year-old female employee of a Pokemon store in Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district was fatally stabbed Thursday night by her former partner-turned-stalker, who later took his own life. The attack occurred at around 7 p.m. on the second floor of Sunshine City, a commercial complex, where the Pokemon store is located. The victim, ###, a part-time worker at the store, was stabbed multiple times in the neck and other parts of her body. She was rushed to the hospital but later died. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old ###, entered the store alone and headed toward the shop counter where the victim was stationed. After attacking the victim, he stabbed himself and was later confirmed dead at the hospital. He has previously been arrested for stalking the victim. A bloody knife with the handle wrapped in a towel, most likely to prevent it from slipping, was found at the scene, according to media reports. At the time of the attack, there were around 100 shoppers present in the store, including foreign tourists and children, causing chaos in the mall. The Pokemon store was temporarily closed on Friday following the attack. The two met at work in December 2023 in the city of Hachioji in western Tokyo and began dating in October of the following year, according to authorities. After their relationship ended in July 2025, the victim filed a report to the police in December, saying her ex-boyfriend was stalking her. The police found ### lurking near ###'s home when they escorted her back and arrested him on suspicion of violating the antistalking law. A fruit knife was found in a rental car that ### had parked nearby and footage of the victim secretly filmed post break-up was found on his smartphone. He was rearrested in January for additional allegations over the possession of a knife and voyeurism and received a restraining order against stalking. At the time, ### admitted to stalking the victim and said that he wanted to get back together with her and that he was thinking of suicide. He was released from detention on Jan. 30 after he was charged through summary proceedings and submitted a written statement vowing to stop his stalking activities. The police recommended him to go to therapy, which he rejected, Mainichi Shimbun daily reported. For her own protection, the Tokyo police advised ### to stay with a relative for about a month and install a security camera at her home. After ### was released, the police checked in with ### several times until mid-March. At the time, there were no signs ### had been planning an attack. According to the Mainichi, authorities also recommended ### to change jobs since ### most likely knew where it was. But the victim resumed working at the Pokemon store after coming back from a relative’s house, saying that it was “her dream” to work there. There was another fatal stabbing in July last year in Sunshine City, in which a male employee of a law firm located in one of the buildings in the complex was stabbed by his colleague.

We come before the Lord with heavy hearts, grieving the tragic and senseless loss of life in Tokyo’s ### district. This act of violence—stemming from a broken relationship, obsession, and unchecked sin—has left a family shattered, a community in shock, and countless witnesses traumatized. We lift up the soul of the young woman who was taken far too soon, praying that she knew the Lord Jesus Christ as her Savior. If she did not, we trust in His infinite mercy and justice, knowing that He alone is the righteous Judge. We also pray for the salvation of the man who committed this horrific act, for even in his final moments, we cling to the hope that he may have cried out to Jesus for forgiveness.

Lord God, we rebuke the spirit of violence, obsession, and unrepentant sin that led to this tragedy. The Bible warns us in 1 John 3:15, *"Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him."* The progression from stalking to murder reveals a heart hardened by sin, unwilling to surrender to Your conviction. We also rebuke the spirit of fear that now grips those who witnessed this attack. Your Word tells us in 2 Timothy 1:7, *"For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control."* We declare that fear will not have the final word over this community.

Father, we pray for the family of the victim—her parents, siblings, and loved ones—who are now walking through unimaginable grief. Comfort them with Your presence, as Psalm 34:18 assures: *"The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit."* Surround them with believers who can minister to them with the love of Christ, and give them the strength to forgive, even as You have forgiven us. We also pray for the employees and shoppers who were present during the attack. Many may be struggling with trauma, guilt, or anger. Heal their minds and hearts, Lord, and remind them of Your promise in Isaiah 41:10: *"Don’t you be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness."*

We must address the deeper issues revealed in this tragedy. The relationship between the victim and her attacker began as a dating relationship, which Scripture does not condemn—but it must be entered into with godly wisdom and the intent of marriage. 1 Corinthians 6:18-20 warns, *"Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."* If this relationship involved sexual sin (fornication), it may have contributed to the emotional entanglement and unhealthy attachment that fueled this tragedy. We must also confront the reality of stalking and obsession, which are rooted in idolatry—placing a person above God. Jesus said in Matthew 22:37-38, *"You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the first and great commandment."* When we idolize another person, we open the door to destruction.

Lord, we pray for the authorities and counselors involved in cases like this. Give them wisdom to recognize the signs of dangerous obsession and the courage to intervene before it’s too late. We also pray for the Church in Japan and around the world to rise up with the message of the Gospel, for it is only through Jesus Christ that hearts are truly transformed. Acts 4:12 declares, *"There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved."* If the victim or her attacker did not know You, Lord, we trust that Your grace is sufficient even in death. But for those still living, we plead that they would turn to Christ before it’s too late.

Finally, we pray for the young woman’s coworkers at the ### store, many of whom may be questioning their own safety and purpose. Remind them that their lives have meaning and value in You, and that no dream or job is worth their souls. Matthew 16:26 asks, *"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his life? Or what will a man give in exchange for his life?"* May they seek You above all else.

We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, who alone can bring healing to broken hearts and justice to the oppressed. Amen.

Oh, how our hearts ache for the young woman whose life was cruelly taken, and for her family and friends who mourn her loss. We stand with them in their grief, praying for God's comfort and peace to surround them. We also lift up the witnesses of this tragedy, that they may find healing and strength in the Lord.

Lord, we ask for Your justice to prevail in this situation. We pray for the family of the victim, that they may find solace in Your love and the support of their community. We also pray for the other employees and shoppers present during the attack, that they may find healing and peace in the midst of their trauma.

We ask for Your mercy on the man who committed this heinous act. We pray that, even in his final moments, he cried out to You for forgiveness. We also ask for Your grace on the authorities and counselors involved in cases like this, that they may have wisdom and courage to intervene before it's too late.

Lord, we ask for Your protection over the living. We pray for the young woman's coworkers at the Pokémon store, that they may find purpose and safety in their lives. We also pray for the Church in Japan and around the world, that they may rise up with the message of the Gospel, for it is only through Jesus Christ that hearts are truly transformed.

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
