You cry out for deliverance, and that is the cry of a soul in pain. But let us consider what true safety is. Do you seek only to have the outward danger pass away? Do not mistake the nature of the peril. For I do not mean the danger that is known by sense, for that is not danger at all. The true danger is the danger of the soul, that which is brought upon men by the devil. A prison with God is a palace of safety compared to a house of sin without Him. Joseph was never safer than when he was falsely accused and cast into the dungeon, for he was delivered from a daily beast of temptation that sought his soul's destruction.

Do not cast yourself into foreseen danger to test God, saying, "Let us see whether He will save me." That is a diabolical thing. Yet if by no doing of your own you find yourself facing the trial, do not believe that His love has failed because He has not immediately granted you escape. He does not always promise deliverance from death, but permits it, granting us something far greater than being spared: the power to despise death itself. Remember, God is faithful, and He will not suffer you to be tempted above that you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. Endurance itself is often the escape He provides.

Therefore, flee from sin with all speed. If your situation requires you to depart from a physical place to guard your soul, then flight is an act of faith, not cowardice. Moses fled, and it was accounted to him as seeing the Invisible God. But if you must remain, stand fast, refusing to love your own ease and security more than the kingdom of Heaven. The very things by which we are hurt, by these same we are benefited. Cry out for this true salvation, and God will either calm the storm around you or make you a strong ship that cannot be wrecked by any wave.

That cry to escape is one every human heart understands. When the pressure builds and the walls feel like they are closing in, the impulse to flee, to find wings like a dove and fly away, wells up so powerfully. Scripture is filled with voices crying out from similar peril, from the depths of real danger. But the witness of God’s word also gives us a sober warning about the way we seek to escape.

There is a pattern in how we drift. It rarely happens all at once. First comes walking near what is ungodly, then standing, then sitting down comfortably in a place we never intended to remain. Lot found himself in Sodom, and though his righteous soul was vexed daily, he had pitched his tent in that direction. When the angels came to pull him from the coming judgment, the command was sharp and clear: escape for your life, do not look behind, do not linger or stay in the plain. The plain seemed safer than the mountains, more reasonable to his eyes, but God’s provision was elsewhere. The mercy of judgment being withheld hinged entirely on Lot reaching the place God had appointed.

The great deception is thinking we can find a better refuge than the one God offers. Many have looked at the circumstances of war, famine, or fear and decided to go down to a personal Egypt for safety and ease, saying, “There we will have peace and bread.” But the very things they fled pursued them there. You cannot outrun your troubles by your own navigation, nor can you hide from the consequences of stepping outside God’s word. The sword we fear, the famine of the soul, finds us even in the place we built for our own comfort, because the problem is not ultimately the external situation but the heart that has turned from trusting the Lord. Running from a problem never resolves it; God asks us to face what we must with His strength, not to craft a scheme of our own deliverance.

The most perilous part of this is a practical lie: that we know better than God what is best for our life, that we can determine our own safety, that escaping the call of God or the narrow path He sets before us will lead to something better. It is a fantasy to think the life of the flesh or a route of disobedience can provide the protection and satisfaction we crave. The restless cycle of building walls around ourselves or reaching for substitutes like any compulsive behavior only deepens the original despair.

You have asked for a safe escape. God Himself has provided the only one that does not result in disaster. How shall we escape if we neglect His great salvation? The word spoken through angels was certain and every transgression received a just reward, and the word spoken by the Lord Jesus is even more sure. There is no escape from the ultimate judgment, and there is no true peace in any refuge we construct. A person is living in a lie if they think they can hide from God or that fleeing a situation by some human device can save them.

The place of safety is not a location or a changed circumstance; it is a person. Abide in Christ. He is the ark of safety before the coming storm, the only place where the sword and the pestilence of a fallen world cannot destroy the soul. When fear screams at you to run, that is the time to press into Him, not to devise your own escape. His will, however difficult the surrounding terrain, is where He blesses and prospers your spirit and keeps you. Do not linger in the plains of compromise or look back longingly at what you are leaving. Trust Him to bring you through the very thing you long to flee, with His presence as your defense, until He delivers you out of it. The Lord is between you and whatever threatens; do not resort to your own devices in a lapse of faith. You are not hidden from His sight, and He catches every tear in His bottle. He will do nothing by way of ultimate judgment until you are safely within His care, so turn your steps toward Him now and find the escape that does not trap you again.
