We understand your heart’s desire to spend more time with this person and to see this relationship grow, but we must first address something of great importance. In your request, you did not invoke the name of Jesus Christ, through whom we have access to the Father and by whom all prayers must be offered. The Scriptures are clear: *"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me'* (John 14:6, WEB). *"There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus"* (1 Timothy 2:5, WEB). Without calling upon His name, we have no assurance that our prayers are heard. We urge you to always approach God through Jesus, for *"there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!"* (Acts 4:12, WEB).
Now, regarding your relationship, we must ask: Is this relationship honoring to God? Are you and this person both believers in Christ, walking in obedience to His Word? The Bible warns us not to be *"unequally yoked with unbelievers"* (2 Corinthians 6:14, WEB), for such relationships can lead us away from the Lord’s will. If this person is not a believer, we strongly encourage you to prayerfully consider whether this relationship aligns with God’s design for your life. Your first and greatest commitment must be to Christ, and any relationship that does not draw you closer to Him is not one He will bless.
If you are not married to this person, we must also address the nature of your relationship. The Bible teaches that intimacy—emotional, physical, or otherwise—is reserved for the covenant of marriage between one man and one woman. *"Flee sexual immorality! 'Every sin that a man does is outside the body,' but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body"* (1 Corinthians 6:18, WEB). If there is any physical intimacy outside of marriage, we urge you to repent and turn away from it, for *"marriage is honorable in all, and the bed is undefiled; but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers"* (Hebrews 13:4, WEB). Courtship should be purposeful, with the goal of determining whether marriage to a fellow believer is God’s will. Anything less than this is not pleasing to Him.
If you are both believers and are pursuing this relationship with the intention of marriage, then we encourage you to seek the Lord’s will above all else. *"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight"* (Proverbs 3:5-6, WEB). A relationship that honors God will be built on prayer, purity, and a shared commitment to Christ.
Let us pray for you:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We lift up this dear one to You, asking that You would open their eyes to Your truth and Your will for their life. Lord, if this relationship is not pleasing to You, we pray that You would give them the strength and wisdom to walk away from it. Convict their heart if there is any sin that needs to be repented of, and lead them into righteousness. If this relationship *is* Your will, we ask that You would make the path clear, that You would guard their hearts and minds in Christ Jesus, and that You would prepare them both for a marriage that glorifies You.
Father, we pray that You would help them to seek You first, above all else. Remove any idolatry from their heart, and let their greatest desire be for You. If it is Your will for them to spend more time with this person, we ask that You would make a way, but only if it aligns with Your perfect plan. Give them discernment to recognize Your voice and the courage to obey it, even if it is difficult.
We rebuke any ungodly soul ties or emotional dependencies that are not of You. Break every chain that would bind them to a relationship that is not ordained by You. Let Your Holy Spirit fill them with peace, wisdom, and clarity. Help them to walk in purity and holiness, setting apart this relationship—or future relationships—for Your glory.
Finally, Lord, we pray that they would grow deeper in their relationship with You. Let them find their fulfillment in Christ alone, so that any earthly relationship is simply an overflow of the love they have for You. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to examine your heart and this relationship in light of Scripture. Seek the Lord earnestly, and ask Him to reveal His will to you. Surround yourself with wise, mature believers who can speak truth into your life. If you are struggling with temptation or confusion, bring it before the Lord in repentance and ask Him to renew your mind. *"Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God"* (Romans 12:2, WEB). Stay rooted in His Word, and He will guide your steps.
