Please pray for my creative block

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Please pray I would get over my art block and my fear of failure! I wish God could use my talents, but I find it hard to start because I already feel defeated, like it's going to fail, and I don't put in my best effort because I don't believe it will be good. I write poetry, and I like writing in general, as well as painting and drawing. I always feel drawn to these things to express my thoughts and ideas but it's hard to actually make it work out.

We hear your heart in this struggle and we join with you in bringing it before the Lord, for we know how heavy it can feel to be drawn to create and yet feel defeated before you even begin.

We understand that desire to have God use your talents in poetry, writing, painting and drawing. That longing itself is from Him, for He is the Creator and we are made in His image. Scripture reminds us that He fills His people with skill and creativity for His glory, as it is written Exodus 31:3 I have filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all kinds of workmanship. And Ephesians 2:10 says For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them. Your gifts are not accidental, they were given to you with purpose, and 1 Peter 4:10 tells us As each has received a gift, employ it in serving one another, as good managers of the grace of God in its various forms.

We also hear the fear of failure and that sense of being defeated that keeps you from putting in your best effort. We want to gently speak truth over that, because that spirit of fear and defeat does not come from God. 2 Timothy 1:7 says For God didn't give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control. When we hold back because we assume we will fail, we are listening to the voice of fear rather than trusting the Father who loves us and who delights in our faithful offering, not in worldly perfection. Colossians 3:23 encourages us Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men. The Lord does not measure your poetry or art by whether the world calls it good, He looks at a heart that offers its work to Him in faith and obedience. Proverbs 16:3 says Commit your deeds to Yahweh, and your plans shall succeed, which reminds us that success in God's eyes is faithfulness in committing the work to Him and letting Him determine the fruit.

We noticed your request mentions God but does not mention Jesus, and we would not want to miss sharing the most important truth with you. It is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and that our gifts can truly be redeemed for His glory. Jesus said in John 14:6 I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. If you have not yet put your trust in Jesus, we encourage you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for Romans 10:9 says that if you will confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is through His grace that we are forgiven, made new, and empowered to live and create for Him, and Philippians 4:13 reminds us I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.

We pray together for you now. Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up this dear one to You. We thank You for the creative gifts You have placed inside them, for the love of words and poetry and painting and drawing. We ask that You would lift this block and break the fear of failure that has kept them feeling defeated. Fill them with Your Spirit of power and love and self-control, and help them to hear Your voice above the voice of doubt. Teach them to commit each poem, each brush stroke, each idea to You, and to work heartily as for You and not for the praise of others. Give them courage to begin, even in small steps, and to offer their best effort as worship to You, trusting You with the outcome. Restore joy in creating and let their talents be used to reflect Your beauty and truth and to encourage others. Draw them ever closer to Jesus, that they would know His strength and His love as the source of all inspiration. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.

We encourage you to begin each time of creating with prayer, dedicating the work to the Lord before you worry about how it will turn out. Do not wait until you feel confident, start faithfully with what you have, even if it feels small or imperfect, and let God shape and grow the gift as you steward it. He is not asking for flawless performance, He is asking for a willing heart that trusts Him with both the process and the result.

We hear how much you love to write and paint, and how discouraging it is to feel drawn to create but frozen before you start. Wanting God to use the gifts He has given you in poetry and art is a beautiful desire, and it makes sense you would feel defeated when fear of failure tells you ahead of time it will not be good enough.

That fear often grows when we start to tie our worth to how flawless the work turns out. Then anything less than perfect can feel like failure, so holding back effort can feel safer than trying wholeheartedly. But God delights in you apart from what you produce, and He cares more about your heart and character in the process than about a perfect finished piece. Freedom to create grows as we learn to let good enough be enough.

A small, gentle step that helps many people is to make starting easier. This week try choosing one modest piece, a short poem or a small sketch, and give it a reasonable time limit, like twenty minutes. Give yourself permission for it to be finished and good enough, not perfect, and notice if thoughts like I have to do it perfectly or not at all come up. Naming that thought can help you keep going within the time you set.

Father, in Jesus name we thank You for the creativity You have placed in our friend. We ask You to quiet the fear of failure and renew joy in making things with You. Help them to begin in freedom, to offer their work to You without shame, and to experience Your kindness in the process. Guide their steps and let their gifts be used for Your purposes. Amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

Your honest confession touches a trial that many of the Lord's people have known, that slavish fear which keeps the soul away from its God and from the work He has given it to do. There is a fear which is holy and happy, the fear of sinning against God and of losing communion with Him, but there is another fear which is as poison to the childlike spirit, the dread which trembles before God as a criminal before a judge, which mistrusts and suspects His goodness and therefore dares not draw near. This fear of failure of which you speak, this shrinking that says it will come to nothing and therefore withholds your best effort, is of that slavish sort and it dishonours the truthfulness and power of God, for it says in effect that He cannot or will not help you in the valley as He does upon the hill.

Remember that He is the God of the valleys as well as the God of the hills. He is the God of the many gifted and gracious man, but He is also the God of the one talented man who seeks to glorify Him. It may be quite true that gifts seem scanty to you, but that does not prevent your being used of the Lord for His gracious purposes. He sees God in all that chequers life, He has created every worm that crawls and painted every flower that blooms, and the whole world is full of God to him who believes in Him. How much more does He delight when a heart moved by His Spirit takes up pen or brush to express thoughts and ideas for His praise. One of the purest and most innocent of joys in which a man can indulge, apart from spiritual things, is a joy in the works of God, and to find a joy in the work of God in your own heart as you create is a healthy and unselfish delight.

You ask why you could not cast out this hindrance, why the block remains. The chief reason for such failure is often unbelief, for God gives the victory to faith, and if we will not believe, neither shall we be established. Whatever may be the reason for your failure, it may be cured, for it is not an insuperable difficulty to the Lord. By His grace this hindrance may be taken away and no longer rob you of your power. Search it out before Him. Have you declared your ways to God and asked Him to hear you and teach you His statutes. Tell Him the way of your thoughts, the way of your imagination, the way of your memory, the way of your hands in poetry and painting, with much to regret and much to desire. The Christian makes much of God and God makes much of him, for they have a mutual delight in one another, and he cannot live happily in his Father's house unless he often sees his Father's face and hears His voice in return.

To get rid of this needless bondage, look to Jesus Christ who has taken all slavish fear away, and then serve God every day with all your might in the very place where He has put you. Offer your writing and your art not as a trial to prove your worth, but as a cheerful gift unto the Lord, for God loves a cheerful giver. Do not wait until you feel success is certain, but dare and venture in simple trust as a child trusts his father, and put in your best effort as unto the Lord and not unto men. He who has given you to ask for bread will not give you a stone, but will give His Holy Spirit to help you.

We will pray for you, that the Lord would lift this art block and this fear of failure from you, that He would grant you faith to believe that He can and will use what He has entrusted to you, that He would teach you His statutes and give you freedom to begin again without dread, and that whether in a line of poetry or a stroke of colour you may do all to the glory of God and find your joy in Him. May He quiet your heart, establish your hands, and let your gifts be a small sanctuary for His praise.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honesty about this struggle is heard, and I thank you for sharing it so openly. The fear of failure that keeps you from beginning, and the feeling of defeat before you have even tried, is a heavy burden, and it is good to bring it to the Lord.

We often fear the judgment of others or our own judgment of ourselves more than we remember the kindness of God who gave the gift in the first place. When the fear of God is present with us, other fears grow smaller. He sees you not to condemn your imperfect effort, but as a Father who delights when His child offers what has been given with a willing heart. You do not need to create something flawless to be faithful. God asks for faithfulness with what we have received, not for perfection according to our own anxious measure.

You mentioned that you feel drawn to poetry, painting and drawing to express your thoughts and ideas. That drawing itself is a sign of the gifts God has placed in you. He gives talents to be used and cultivated, not hidden away because we are afraid they will not be good enough. Even a small beginning, offered sincerely to Him, is precious.

Let me pray for you.

Father in heaven, I lift up this dear one to You. You are the giver of every good gift and every creative ability comes from Your hand. You know the desire to use these gifts for You, and You know the fear and the sense of defeat that holds them back. I pray You would take away the spirit of fear and replace it with peace and courage. Help them to begin again, not for the praise of people and not driven by fear of failure, but working heartily for You. Give clarity of mind, freedom from the weight of perfection, and joy in the work itself. Teach them to offer each poem, each sketch, each painting to You with thankfulness, trusting You with the outcome. Renew their strength and let their work bear fruit in Your time. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

Do not despise small beginnings. Set aside a short time each day to work quietly and prayerfully, offering that time to God before you start. Invite Him into the process, thank Him for the ability to create, and be content to do the next small part well. He will be with you in the doing, and He can use what you offer, even when it feels weak in your own eyes.

Your honesty about feeling defeated before you even begin is something many people who love to create will understand. That fear of failure can be paralyzing, and it often leads to holding back effort so that if the work does not turn out well, the disappointment will not hurt as much. God sees that struggle, and He wants to meet you in it.

Scripture shows us that God is the great Creator, and He made people in His own image. Part of what that means is that the desire you feel to make something, to shape words into poetry or color and line into painting and drawing, is a reflection of Him. He delights in variety. Just as no two snowflakes are alike though trillions fall, He has made each person distinct, with a distinct voice and way of seeing. Your way of expressing thoughts and ideas through art and writing is not an accident. It is part of how He made you, and He delights when you offer that back to Him.

Apart from God, even great achievement can feel empty. That is the message of Ecclesiastes. But when creation and work are done within a relationship of love with Him, they take on a different meaning, like a song of love between two who belong to each other. God does not want your art to be a way to prove your worth or to earn His approval. He wants it to be an expression of love and worship, something you share with Him out of the relationship you already have through Jesus.

That changes how failure is seen. God does not look at you or your work with a critical eye that is searching for flaws. Scripture says love covers a multitude of faults, and that is how He looks at His children, with adoring love. He is not measuring your righteousness or your value by how perfect a poem or painting is, or by how much you produce. Many people fall into thinking that worth comes from doing more, but God is not keeping score that way. He sees the heart that wants to honor Him.

Growth often happens right at the place where we feel we have failed. Many believers know what it is to try, to fail, to feel up and down, and to learn again that salvation and strength are from the Lord and not from our own effort to be perfect. God does not leave you at the point of failure. He meets you there and gently begins again with you. You do not have to conquer your fear on your own before He can use you. You can bring the fear itself to Him.

The beginning of real wisdom is a reverent awe of God, not a dread of failing before people. When that awe of Him becomes larger than the fear of what others will think or whether the work will be good enough, it frees you to create faithfully. Offer your best effort not because you are afraid of failing, but because you love Him and want to give Him what you have. Then trust Him with the outcome, whether it feels successful or not.

Praying for you that God will lift this block and quiet the fear that tells you it will all fail. May He remind you daily that you are made in His image to create, that He delights in the unique gifts He gave you, and that His love for you does not rise and fall with how well a piece turns out. May He give you courage to begin, grace to do your work heartily as an offering to Him, and peace to leave the results in His hands. May your poetry, painting and drawing become a joyful way to express what He is teaching you and to give thanks to Him.
