Hold Fast Your Shield

Believers find freedom from condemnation because Christ died, rose, and now intercedes for them at God’s right hand.
Victor Emmanuel, Emancipator
Christ sets spiritual captives free by opening blind eyes, breaking sin’s chains, and lifting the despondent into hope.
We join with you in faith and agreement over this powerful promise and we thank you for inviting us to stand with you in prayer.

We love the scripture you have claimed, for it is a heritage given to the servants of the Lord. As it is written, No weapon that is formed against you will prevail and you will condemn every tongue that rises against you in judgment. This is the heritage of Yahweh's servants, and their righteousness which is of me, says Yahweh. Isaiah 54:17. This does not mean that weapons will not be formed or that tongues will not rise, but that by God's sovereign power and righteousness they will not ultimately prosper or prevail against those who belong to Him. Our vindication and righteousness comes from Him alone.

We also join you in praying against the spiritual forces of darkness, for we remember that our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12. Therefore we do not fight in our own strength, but with the armor of God, with truth, righteousness, faith, prayer and the Word of God, submitting ourselves to God and resisting the devil so that he will flee from us. James 4:7.

We rejoice that you asked all of this in the name of Jesus Christ with thanksgiving, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is in His name that every prayer is heard. As it is written, There is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus. 1 Timothy 2:5.

We pray together with you now.

Father in heaven, we come before Your throne of grace in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this dear one to You with thanksgiving. We thank You for Your promise that no weapon formed against Your children will prevail. We ask that You surround this life with Your favor as with a shield, that You pour out Your blessings and Your miracles according to Your perfect will and for Your glory. We ask that You expose and condemn every false tongue and every unjust judgment that rises up, and let Your truth and righteousness prevail. We take authority in Jesus name over every principality and power of darkness in high places that would seek to hinder, oppress or deceive, and we ask that You clothe this one in the full armor of God to stand firm in faith. Let Your unstoppable and abounding glory be revealed in this life and spread throughout the world, that many would see Your goodness and turn to You. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to Your purpose. Romans 8:28. So we trust You to use even trials for Your glory and for good. Fill this heart with peace, boldness and unwavering faith to continue to abide in You. We ask all these things in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

We encourage you to continue to abide in Christ daily, to dwell in His Word and in prayer, for the promise of Isaiah 54:17 belongs to those who walk in fellowship with Him and whose righteousness is of Him. Keep putting on the armor of God each day, keep giving thanks in all things, and keep trusting that God will cause His glory to shine through your life in His perfect timing and way.

We are grateful you shared this prayer with us and invited us to agree with you. We hear how much you want to live under God's protection and see His goodness and glory at work in your life and around the world, and we are glad to stand with you in that longing.

It is a good thing to bring your desire for favor and blessing and help against spiritual opposition directly to the Lord and leave it in His hands. We find it helps to keep our focus more on knowing Christ and walking faithfully with Him day by day than on the opposition itself, trusting that as we stay close to Him He is the one who guards and guides us.

One simple way to keep that focus is to set aside a few unhurried minutes each day to thank God for what He has already done and to ask Him to lead your steps, alongside time in His Word and with other believers who can encourage you.

Father, we lift our friend to You now. We ask for Your favor and mercy over their life, for Your protection and peace, and for Your glory to be seen in and through them in the way You choose. Draw them closer to Jesus and give them confidence in Your care each day. In Jesus' name we pray, amen.

Your desire to rest upon the promise, No weapon that is formed against you shall prosper, is a good and right desire when it is rightly understood. That word was spoken to the servants of the Lord, to those who are in Christ, and it is in Christ that we find our safety. The promise does not mean that no trial or tongue will ever rise against us, for they will, but that no weapon shall finally prevail to destroy those whom God has chosen in Him and blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

We do join you in prayer, and we would gently turn your thoughts to that which is highest. An enlightened heart is grateful for temporal blessings, but is far more grateful for spiritual blessings, for temporal blessings do not last long, they are soon gone. Temporal blessings are not definite marks of Divine favor, since God gives them to the unworthy and to the wicked, as well as to the righteous. The corn and wine and oil are often given to those who know Him not. Temporal mercies do betoken the freeness of the Divine bounty, but they are never bestowed as the earnest of His special love. Such inferior gifts He often lavishes in abundance upon those who are not His people. Spiritual blessings He reserves for His own redeemed, regenerate family.

Therefore let us pray not only for favor and outward miracles, but chiefly for those blessings which are the rarest, the richest, the most enduring of all blessings and priceless in value. All spiritual blessings come from the Father. We have never earned one, we could never create one, and all our blessings come from the Divine purpose, according as He has chosen us in Him before the foundation of the world.

We pray for you that God would bless you indeed with these covenant blessings. First, that He would give you a new heart, for the Holy Spirit cannot dwell in the old heart, and where He gives a new heart He also gives a new spirit and causes His people to walk in His ways. It takes as much Divine energy to make a saint as to create a world, and He rejoices in every one of His elect as the work of His hands. We pray that you may know forgiveness through the sweet savor of the Lord Jesus Christ, whose merits alone are holy and purely offered unto God and accepted in the nostrils of the Most High. There is no other name by which we must be saved, and salvation is through Jesus Christ alone.

Concerning principalities and powers, we remember that there is Divine work always going on before God's people. His shield goes in front, His sword cuts and clears the way, and He will thrust out our enemies before us. Yet we are not to be idle, for we have also a Divine command to be obedient to His Word and to put on the whole armor of God, standing in faith and holiness. The dry tree by Divine grace shall flourish, and the low tree, fostered by the husbandman, shall mount even to the stars, while every weapon formed against the Lord's anointed shall at last be broken.

So we stand with you in faith and agreement, giving thanks, and ask the Father in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, that He would keep you from evil, that He would cause every tongue that rises against you in judgment to be shown empty at the last, that He would fill you with spiritual blessings, with a clean heart, with peace through perfect pardon, with love for Christ and power to walk in obedience, and that whether He gives much or little of this world's goods, you may be content to be blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ, to the praise of the glory of His grace. May the Holy Spirit seal these mercies home to you and make you restless for nothing but Christ Himself, who is our shield and our exceeding great reward.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing your heart and your desire to trust the promises of God. I join with you in prayer, and I want to help set that familiar verse in its true light so that your faith may rest on solid ground.

When the prophet says, no weapon formed against you shall prosper and every tongue that rises against you in judgment you shall condemn, he is speaking of the heritage of the servants of the Lord. It is not a charm to be repeated for favor or success as the world counts success, but a promise that God will finally vindicate His own people, even when weapons are formed and tongues do accuse. Many faithful servants have suffered weapons and slander in this life, yet the promise held because their ultimate standing before God could not be overthrown.

For that reason I cannot simply echo a prayer for favor, miracles and blessings as if repeating the words many times will move God to give them. The favor we most need is not outward prosperity but reconciliation with God through Jesus Christ alone, and His grace to live a holy life. As I have often taught, miracles without a holy life are nothing, and miracles are given chiefly for the sake of the soul and for the unbelieving, not to lift up the faithful. What God provides for His people is both the grace of His power and the training for their conduct, so that they are kept clear of covetousness and pride, remembering that freely we have received and freely we must give.

Your longing to pray against principalities and powers of darkness is right, for Scripture tells us our struggle is against those spiritual forces. This is what is called a good warfare. It requires not only asking for protection but strong arms, sobriety, awakenedness and continual vigilance. It requires strong minds, skill in the Scriptures and powerful thoughts, putting away superfluous excuses and applying ourselves to the toils which virtue requires. Then we attract the true favor of God, which is His help in our struggles and His work in us to will and to do what pleases Him.

So let me pray with you in a way that seeks first His kingdom and His glory, which alone is extreme and unmatched and abounding, and which alone should fill the whole earth.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, through whom alone we have access to You, I thank You for this one who seeks You. Grant true favor, which is forgiveness of sins and peace with You through the cross. Grant the blessing of a heart that loves Your Word, that wars a good warfare, that stands clothed in truth, righteousness, faith and the gospel of peace. Guard against the schemes of the evil one, and where You in Your wisdom choose to work miracles, let them point to Christ and not to us. Let every accusation of the enemy fall before Your justification, and let Your glory, not ours, be seen in this life and in the world to come. Teach us to receive Your grace with humility and to give it freely to others, seeking holiness more than outward display. All this I ask with thanksgiving in the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.
