Nicotine addiction

We join with you in lifting up this struggle against nicotine addiction, knowing that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and should be treated with honor and care. The apostle Paul reminds us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, *"Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s."* This addiction is not just a physical battle but a spiritual one, and we must rely on the strength of Christ to overcome it.

It is encouraging to see that you have invoked the name of Jesus in your prayer, for it is only through Him that we find true freedom and victory. Jesus said in John 8:36, *"If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed."* Your acknowledgment of His authority in this request is foundational, and we stand with you in claiming this promise.

Addiction can feel like a chain that binds us, but the Word of God assures us that *"No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure"* (1 Corinthians 10:13). This is not a battle you face alone—the Holy Spirit is your Helper, and we, your brothers and sisters in Christ, are interceding for you.

Let us also consider what may be at the root of this struggle. Often, addictions are attempts to fill a void or cope with stress, loneliness, or other emotional wounds. We encourage you to seek God’s presence in those moments of weakness. Psalm 34:17-19 says, *"The righteous cry, and Yahweh hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but Yahweh delivers him out of them all."* Turn to Him in prayer, in worship, and in His Word when the craving strikes. Replace the habit of reaching for nicotine with the habit of reaching for God.

Practical steps can also be helpful. Consider removing all nicotine products from your environment, avoiding triggers, and seeking accountability from a trusted believer. If you haven’t already, we encourage you to confess this struggle to someone in your church or a mature Christian who can pray with you and hold you accountable. James 5:16 tells us, *"Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective."*

Now, let us pray together for your freedom:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister who is seeking freedom from the grip of nicotine addiction. Lord, You know the depth of this struggle, the hold it has had, and the desire of their heart to be free. We ask that You break every chain of bondage in the mighty name of Jesus. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may be empowered to resist temptation and walk in victory.

Father, we pray that You would renew their mind and transform their desires. Help them to see their body as Your temple, worthy of honor and care. When the cravings come, let them turn to You first—through prayer, through Your Word, and through the support of Your people. Remove every trigger and replace the habit of nicotine with a deeper habit of dependence on You.

We rebuke the enemy who seeks to keep our brother/sister in bondage. Satan, you have no authority here. The blood of Jesus has already won this battle, and we declare freedom and deliverance in His name. Lord, surround them with Your peace, Your strength, and Your presence. Let them experience the truth of Your promise that they are no longer a slave to sin but a child of the King, free indeed.

We also ask that You heal any emotional or spiritual wounds that may have contributed to this addiction. Fill the voids in their heart with more of You, that they may find their satisfaction and comfort in You alone. Strengthen them, Lord, and let this season of struggle become a testimony of Your power and faithfulness.

Thank You, Father, for hearing our prayer. We trust in Your goodness and Your ability to bring complete deliverance. May our brother/sister walk in the freedom You have purchased for them, and may their life bring glory to Your name. In Jesus’ mighty and holy name, we pray. Amen.

Stay steadfast in this fight, dear one. The road may not be easy, but the Lord is with you every step of the way. Cling to Him, and do not give up. *"Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up"* (Galatians 6:9). We are cheering you on and will continue to pray for your victory. If you stumble, do not be discouraged—get back up, repent, and keep moving forward. God’s grace is sufficient for you, and His power is made perfect in your weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). You are not defined by this struggle; you are defined by Christ’s victory in you. Keep pressing on toward the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus (Philippians 3:14).

We're right there with you, friend, standing in faith for your freedom. We know the battle can feel overwhelming, but remember, you're not alone. We're here, and so is the Holy Spirit, ready to fight alongside you.

We want to encourage you to keep seeking God in those moments of weakness. When the craving hits, instead of reaching for nicotine, reach for God. Dive into His Word, spend time in prayer, and let His presence fill you. Replace one habit with another - a habit of dependence on God.

Also, consider finding an accountability partner. Having someone to pray with and check in with can make a world of difference. James 5:16 reminds us that "the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective." Let's be that support for you, praying with you and for you.

Keep fighting, dear one. Freedom is within reach, and we're cheering you on every step of the way. Trust in God's power and grace, and don't give up. You've got this, in Jesus' name.
