Disciple of Prayer
Good Morning,

First, I want to say thank you for your continued prayers. I am happy to report that in 13 days I will be defending my dissertation. If all goes well, I will get my Ph.D. Your prayers made this possible. Second, I apologize for the long post but it does provide the context of what I am going through.

Second, right now my life is pretty chaotic and I do not know how to handle it all and am in dire need of God’s love, support, and help.

As previously mentioned, in 13 days I will defend my dissertation. My presentation and preparation for this, however, has not been going well. Right now, my wife is working during the day and I am taking care of the kids. My contract with my university expired and I am no longer being funded by them. At this point, we cannot afford daycare so I take care of them. By the time I can do things to prepare for my presentation (which is usually late at night), I am exhausted (as my kids are 3 and 1), and I can only get a couple things done. Also, my chair wants my presentation to be 30 minutes to explain a 270 page paper and I am struggling to find a way to do that.

Second, since I will be defending my dissertation and am no longer contracted with my university, I have been applying to a ton of jobs (over 250 jobs) and I have yet to get interest from a company. At this point, I am feeling like a failure because I am not financially providing for my family and as a man it is a tough pill to swallow. This job search has also put a strain on my marriage in two ways. First, my wife is upset that I did not start applying to jobs in January. She told me back in January I should apply for jobs but I was busy trying to finish my dissertation that I did not have the time and mental capacity to look at jobs during that time. Second, my wife has set some parameters in my job search that seems unrealistic. Essentially, she wants me to work remote for less pay or work in-person and make over six figures so that way she can quit her job and watch the kids. We live in a state with a high cost of living, so two incomes is needed and this has led to a lot of arguments about my next steps. I am not trying to say I am a perfect husband. I am not. But the parameters have been difficult to work with.

Third, I have a ton of financial debt and I do not know how to get out of it. I have nearly six figures of student loan debt and a hefty five figure credit card debt. At this point, I can only make the minimum payments and the interest on these payments are kicking in. At this point, I am drowning in debt and don’t know how to get out of it.

Finally, for the past year I have had a hard time sleeping at night. When I lie in bed, I can literally feel the devil testing me with my addictions and my mind. And a lot of these nights, I fall into his trap. Even yesterday, where I felt God’s presence during the day, the devil came in my mind during the night and I fell into my addiction. To be honest, I don’t know how to stop the devil’s attacks. It is grueling, painful, and exhausting, and it sucks the life right out of me.

Right now, I just want to quit and give up because it feels like things won’t get better. I feel so lost and I just want to run to God but I can’t see Him. Please pray that God can help me with all of these things and he can guide me because right now, I am beyond lost and the feeling of hopelessness continues to grow.

Thank you for reading this and your prayers.

We are truly grateful for your heartfelt sharing and we stand with you in prayer and support. Firstly, we rejoice with you as you approach the defense of your dissertation. It is a significant achievement and we are confident that the Lord, who began a good work in you, will be faithful to complete it.

In the midst of your chaotic situation, we encourage you to cast all your anxieties on Him, because He cares for you. We are called to be anxious for nothing, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, we are to present our requests to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.

Let's address the issues you've raised and seek God's will together in Jesus' name.

Regarding your dissertation defense, we pray for divine wisdom and strength. The Lord promises that if any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. We declare that the Lord will grant you the wisdom and ability to condense your work effectively and present it with excellence.

Concerning your employment, we pray that the Lord will open the right doors for you. We understand your feelings, but remember that God's ways are higher than ours. Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight. We pray for your wife as well, that the Lord will align your hearts and grant you both understanding and patience. Remember that a house divided against itself cannot stand. It is crucial that you both be in agreement and support each other in this journey.

Regarding the parameters set by your wife, we encourage you to communicate openly and honestly with her. Encourage her to fully support and submit to your authority as her husband. It is important to remember the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the assembly, being himself the savior of the body. As she is to her husband, those wives that are Christians are to be to their husbands in every way. But as the assembly is subject to Christ, so let the wives also be to their own husbands as the Lord's example to the local assembly. As the Church is subject to Christ, even so let wives be to their own husbands in every thing. We also encourage you to be understanding and considerate of her feelings and to love her as Christ loves the church. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly, and gave himself up for it.

Regarding your financial situation, we pray that the Lord will provide for all your needs according to His riches in glory. The Lord promises that He will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus. We encourage you to be good stewards of your finances and to seek godly counsel in managing your debt.

Regarding your spiritual battles, we stand with you in prayer, rebuking the devil and his attacks. We encourage you to put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Also, submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

Finally, we encourage you to fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Trust in Him, and do not be discouraged. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. Remember that the righteous cry out, and the Lord hears them; he delivers them from all their troubles. The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

Let us pray together:

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before You, lifting up this dear brother in Christ. We thank You for his achievements and we ask for Your wisdom, strength, and guidance as he prepares to defend his dissertation. We pray for Your provision in his employment search, and we ask for Your will to be done in his life and in his marriage. We rebuke the devil and his attacks, and we ask for Your protection and peace. We pray for deliverance from all addictions and strongholds, and we ask for Your healing and restoration. We pray for his family's finances and ask for Your provision and guidance. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

We will keep you in our prayers and trust that the Lord will work all things out for your good and for His glory. Remember that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. Keep trusting in the Lord, and do not give up. We are here to support and encourage you in your journey.

We're right here with you, dear friend, as you navigate through this storm. We understand the chaos, the uncertainty, and the overwhelming feelings that come with it all. But remember, God is in the midst of it all, and He's got a plan.

First, let's tackle that dissertation defense. We know you've got a big task ahead, but we also know that God who began this good work in you will be faithful to complete it. Trust in Him, and let's ask for His wisdom, strength, and guidance as you prepare. Maybe it's time to set aside some dedicated time slots for preparation, even if it's just an hour or two each day. And remember, it's okay to ask for help. Reach out to your chair, fellow students, or even a tutor if you need to.

Now, about that job search. We know it's tough, and it's easy to feel like a failure when it's not going as planned. But remember, God sees your efforts, and He's working things out in His own time. Keep applying, keep praying, and trust that He's got a plan for you. In the meantime, let's ask for God's provision and peace in your financial situation. It's okay to be honest with your wife about your feelings and concerns. Open communication is key in any relationship, and it's especially important now.

We also want to address your spiritual battle. It's tough, we know, but you're not alone. The devil wants to discourage you, but God wants to strengthen you. Put on that full armor of God, and resist the devil. He'll flee from you. And remember, God is close to the brokenhearted. Cry out to Him, and He will hear you.

Lastly, fix your eyes on Jesus. He's the author and perfecter of your faith. Trust in Him, and don't be discouraged. He's got you, and He's working all things out for your good.

Let's pray together:

"Dear Heavenly Father, we come before You today, lifting up our dear brother. We thank You for him, for his achievements, and for his perseverance. We ask for Your wisdom, strength, and guidance as he prepares for his dissertation defense. We ask for Your provision in his job search, and for Your will to be done in his life and in his marriage. We ask for Your protection and peace in his spiritual battles. We pray for his family's finances, and we ask for Your provision and guidance. We pray all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen."

We're here for you, and we'll keep you in our prayers. Trust in the Lord, and don't give up. He's got you, and He's working all things out for your good.

We are praying for you. I know that you are overwhelmed and exhausted but you have a lot to be thankful for. You have a wife and kids that love you. You have a home, food and clothes on your back. Think about why you worked this hard. Think about how close you are to meeting this next goal and moving up. It is always hardest right before you get your breakthrough. Your breakthrough is coming and you will look back on the struggle with gratitude that you had faith and believed.
