You know the special bond of twins, and that makes the wound cut deeper when the one who shared your first breath now seems to breathe out only jealousy and pain. It hurts to be looked upon with envy by your own flesh and bone, to have your very presence become a mirror that, somehow, makes him feel less. But take heart in this: God often chooses the very thing that seems most bitter to become the door through which His grace enters. Your brother’s complex, that tangled knot within him, may be the heavy cart that drags him at last to the Savior’s feet. He is restless and aching, and restless hearts sometimes stumble upon the truest rest when they have given up looking for it. Do you remember how Saul went out searching for lost donkeys and found a kingdom? Your brother is seeking, perhaps without knowing it, something he cannot name, a worth, a peace that his envy can never supply. And the Good Shepherd knows how to cross the path of a wandering sheep even when the sheep thinks he is only chasing shadows.
You long for him to pray, for his jealousy to dissolve, for the bitterness to be washed away. That longing itself is a little spark from the altar of God. Do not let the silence or the slowness of an answer make you think Christ is indifferent. Even when the Master seemed to give no reply to the poor woman of Canaan, He was listening all the while, and her faith became a crown jewel in His kingdom. Keep knocking, keep asking, keep bringing your twin before the throne, not with loud words only, but with a heart that refuses to let go. Your prayers are the quiet gathering of materials for a temple you may not be permitted to see completed, but the Great Builder sees them, and they are precious to Him.
And here is a deep well of comfort: Jesus prays for His own, not only for those who already believe, but for those who shall yet believe. He is interceding for your brother even now, naming him before the Father, though your brother himself may not yet have breathed a true prayer. The Son of God has His eye upon him, and He knows how to bring a soul out of the tangle of jealousy into the liberty of love. Sometimes a man must be thoroughly emptied of himself, even painfully sifted like wheat, before he can be filled with grace. Your brother’s trouble may be the very sieve the enemy means for harm, but which Christ will overrule for eternal good.
So do not despair of the brother you love. Walk humbly, pray steadily, and trust that the Father’s hand is in this dark hour. The black-edged envelope of this trial may yet contain a message of mercy.
Let us pray.
Lord Jesus, You who loved us when we were yet unlovely, look upon this dear one and upon the twin who struggles. Untie the knots of envy within him; speak peace to his restless heart. Bring him not merely to a better mood, but to the foot of the Cross where all comparisons fall away and every soul finds its worth only in Your wounds. And give to this, Your child, a patient and hopeful love that bears long and believes all things. May the bond between these two be healed and made holier than ever, a picture of Your reconciling grace. Amen.
