John 11:25-26 states, "Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. W"

John 11:25-26 states, "Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me will live, even though they die; 26 and whoever lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?”". In this passage, Jesus tells Martha that He is the source of resurrection and eternal life, meaning that those who believe in Him will have life even after death, and those who live by believing in Him will never experience spiritual death. Breakdown of the verses "I am the resurrection and the life": Jesus identifies Himself as the fundamental power of both spiritual and physical resurrection and the source of eternal, unending life. "Whoever believes in me will live, even though they die": This points to the spiritual resurrection for those who believe in Jesus. They will inherit eternal life and live on even after physical death. "And whoever lives and believes in me will never die": This refers to the believers who will never experience spiritual death, which means they will remain in a right relationship with God throughout their lives and into eternity. "Do you believe this?": Jesus challenges Martha and, by extension, all people to have a genuine and complete faith in Him.

What a powerful and eternal truth you’ve shared from John 11:25-26! These words spoken by Jesus to Martha are not just a comfort for her in the face of Lazarus’ death but a foundational declaration of who Christ is and the hope He offers to all who place their faith in Him. Let us reflect deeply on this passage together, for it is the very heart of the Gospel—the good news that Jesus alone holds the keys to life, death, and eternity.

Jesus begins with the profound statement, *“I am the resurrection and the life.”* Here, He does not merely claim to *have* power over resurrection and life—He declares that He *is* these things. This is one of the great “I AM” statements in John’s Gospel, echoing the divine name revealed to Moses in Exodus 3:14, where God declares, *“I AM WHO I AM.”* Jesus is not just a teacher, prophet, or miracle-worker; He is the eternal God incarnate, the source of all life, both physical and spiritual. In Him, death is not the end but a passage into eternal life for those who believe. This truth should fill us with awe and reverence, for our Savior is not distant or detached—He is the very essence of life itself.

Next, Jesus says, *“Whoever believes in me will live, even though they die.”* This is the promise of resurrection! Physical death is a reality for all because of sin (Romans 5:12), but for the believer, death is not final. Our bodies may perish, but our spirits are alive in Christ, and one day, we will be raised imperishable (1 Corinthians 15:42-44). This hope is not wishful thinking—it is a certainty because Jesus Himself conquered death through His resurrection (1 Corinthians 15:20-22). When we believe in Him, we are united with Him in His death and resurrection, ensuring that even physical death cannot separate us from the life He gives.

Then, Jesus adds, *“And whoever lives and believes in me will never die.”* This speaks of spiritual life—the eternal, unbroken fellowship with God that begins the moment we place our faith in Christ. Spiritual death is separation from God, the consequence of sin (Ephesians 2:1). But in Christ, we are made alive spiritually (Ephesians 2:4-5), and this life is eternal. We will never experience the second death, which is the eternal separation from God in the lake of fire (Revelation 20:14-15). Instead, we are sealed by the Holy Spirit as a guarantee of our inheritance in Christ (Ephesians 1:13-14).

Finally, Jesus asks Martha—and by extension, each of us—*“Do you believe this?”* This is not a rhetorical question; it is a personal challenge. Faith in Christ is not merely intellectual assent to facts about Him. It is a deep, transformative trust that He is who He claims to be and that His promises are true. Martha’s response is a model for us: *“Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, God’s Son, he who comes into the world”* (John 11:27). True faith acknowledges Jesus as Lord, the Messiah, the Son of God, and surrenders to Him in obedience and worship.

Now, let us consider: Do *we* believe this? Not just in theory, but in the daily realities of our lives? When we face loss, suffering, or the fear of death, do we cling to Jesus as our resurrection and life? When we are tempted to place our hope in worldly things—wealth, relationships, or our own efforts—do we remember that only Christ offers eternal life? And when we share the Gospel with others, do we proclaim this hope boldly, urging them to place their faith in Jesus alone?

Let us also remember that this promise is for *whoever believes*—there are no exceptions based on background, sin, or past failures. Jesus extends this invitation to all, and it is by grace through faith that we receive it (Ephesians 2:8-9). If there is anyone reading this who has not yet placed their faith in Christ, we urge you: Turn to Him today! Confess your sins, believe in His death and resurrection for your salvation, and surrender your life to Him. There is no greater decision you could ever make.

For those of us who do believe, let us live in the reality of this truth. Let us not fear death, for it has been defeated (1 Corinthians 15:54-57). Let us not live for this world alone, but set our minds on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God (Colossians 3:1-2). And let us share this hope with a world that is perishing without it.

**Let us pray together:**

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, who is the resurrection and the life. Lord, we thank You that in Him, death is not the end but the doorway to eternal life with You. We confess that sometimes our faith wavers, and the fears of this world threaten to overwhelm us. Forgive us for the times we have doubted Your promises or placed our hope in anything less than You.

Father, we ask that You would deepen our faith in Jesus. Help us to truly believe that whoever believes in Him will live, even though they die, and that whoever lives and believes in Him will never die. May this truth anchor our souls in every season of life, especially when we face loss, suffering, or the shadow of death. Remind us that our citizenship is in heaven, and that our lives are hidden with Christ in You (Colossians 3:3).

Lord, we lift up those who are grieving the loss of loved ones. Comfort them with the hope of the resurrection, and assure them that those who die in Christ are absent from the body but present with You (2 Corinthians 5:8). Give them strength to endure and joy in the knowledge that they will see their loved ones again in Your presence.

We also pray for those who do not yet know You. Open their hearts to receive the truth of the Gospel. Convict them of their need for a Savior, and draw them to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. May they hear Your voice asking, *“Do you believe this?”* and respond with a resounding *“Yes, Lord!”*

Finally, Father, help us to live as those who have been raised with Christ. May our lives reflect the reality of the resurrection power at work in us. Give us boldness to proclaim this hope to a world that desperately needs it. Use us as vessels of Your grace and truth, that many may come to know Jesus as their resurrection and life.

We ask all these things in the precious and mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
