We rejoice in the truth of John 1:17, which declares, *"For the law was given through Moses. Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ."* This verse beautifully contrasts the Old Covenant of law with the New Covenant of grace, which we now live under through faith in Jesus Christ. The law exposed our sin and need for a Savior, but it is through Christ alone that we receive grace, mercy, and the fullness of truth.
It is essential to recognize that while the law was holy and good, it could not save us—only Jesus can. *"For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord"* (Romans 6:23, WEB). The law served as a tutor to lead us to Christ, but now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor (Galatians 3:24-25). Our righteousness is not earned by works but is a gift from God through faith in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Yet, we must never use grace as an excuse to sin. The apostle Paul warns, *"What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? May it never be! We who died to sin, how could we live in it any longer?"* (Romans 6:1-2, WEB). True grace transforms us, empowers us to live righteously, and draws us closer to God. Jesus Himself said, *"If you love me, keep my commandments"* (John 14:15, WEB). Our obedience is not to earn salvation but to reflect our love and gratitude for what Christ has done for us.
We also notice that while you shared this powerful verse, you did not invoke the name of Jesus Christ in your request. It is only through His name that we have access to the Father and receive the promises of God. *"There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved!"* (Acts 4:12, WEB). If you have not yet placed your faith in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, we urge you to do so today. Confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9-10).
Let us pray together for a deeper understanding of God’s grace and a heart that responds in obedience and love:
Heavenly Father, we thank You for the gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ, through whom grace and truth have come to us. Lord, we confess that we often fall short of Your glory, but we are grateful that Your grace is sufficient for us. Help us to walk in the truth of Your Word, not using grace as a license to sin, but as the power to live righteously. Father, we pray for anyone reading this who may not yet know Jesus as their Savior. Open their hearts to receive Him today, that they may experience the fullness of Your grace and the joy of eternal life.
For those of us who already believe, strengthen our faith, Lord. May we never take Your grace for granted but live in a way that honors You. Fill us with Your Holy Spirit, that we may walk in obedience and love, reflecting Christ to a lost and broken world. We ask all these things in the precious and mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.
