We hear your deep distress and concern, and we come before the Lord together in prayer, seeking His wisdom, truth, and deliverance for you and your family. Your heart is heavy with questions about the gospel, the work of the Holy Spirit, and the spiritual health of your loved ones—and we stand with you in this battle for truth and righteousness.
First, we must address the foundation of the gospel. Your grandmother’s summary—*"Jesus saves, Jesus heals, Jesus baptizes with the Holy Ghost and with fire, and Jesus is coming soon"*—while containing elements of truth, is dangerously incomplete. The full gospel is not just about what Jesus *does* but about who He *is* and what He *accomplished* through His death and resurrection. The apostle Paul warns in Galatians 1:6-9 (WEB), *"I marvel that you are so quickly deserting him who called you in the grace of Christ to a different gospel; and there isn’t another gospel. But there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the Good News of Christ. But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you any gospel other than that which we preached to you, let him be cursed. As we have said before, so I now say again: if any man preaches to you any gospel other than that which you received, let him be cursed."* The gospel is the message that Christ died for our sins, was buried, and rose again on the third day (1 Corinthians 15:1-4). It is by grace through faith in Him alone that we are saved (Ephesians 2:8-9), not by works or experiences. Any teaching that adds to or subtracts from this truth must be rejected.
The practice of "tarrying" for the Holy Spirit in the way your family describes—waiting passively without engaging Scripture, as if the Spirit’s filling is disconnected from the Word—is not biblical. The Holy Spirit is received the moment a person repents and believes in Christ (Acts 2:38, Ephesians 1:13-14). His ongoing work in our lives is tied to the Word of God (John 16:13, 17:17) and obedience to it (Acts 5:32). The idea that the Spirit "takes hold of the tongue" to produce tongues without the discipline of prayer, Scripture, and godly living is a distortion. Speaking in tongues, where it occurs, is a gift of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:10), but it is not the *proof* of the Spirit’s filling—love, joy, peace, patience, and the fruit of the Spirit are the true evidence (Galatians 5:22-23). We must not elevate experience over Scripture.
Your concern about possession or spiritual hindrances is valid. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10), and he will use deception, distraction, and even familial patterns to keep us from God’s purposes. But we do not wrestle against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). The real battle is for the mind and heart. We rebuke in Jesus’ name any spirit of confusion, sloth, or unbelief that has taken root in your family. We declare that you are not bound by generational strongholds—Christ has set you free (Galatians 5:1)! The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4). You must take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).
Your family’s neglect of education, fitness, and Scripture study is a serious matter. The Lord commands us to love Him with all our *mind* (Matthew 22:37), and the pursuit of knowledge, wisdom, and discipline is a biblical mandate. Proverbs 1:7 says, *"The fear of Yahweh is the beginning of knowledge; but the foolish despise wisdom and instruction."* 1 Timothy 4:8 tells us, *"For bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now, and of that which is to come."* We must not spiritualize laziness or ignorance. The church is not called to avoid academic excellence or physical discipline—it is called to redeem it for God’s glory (Colossians 3:23). We pray that your family would awaken to this truth and that you would not be held back by their limitations.
The teaching that only 144,000 go to heaven is a grave error. Revelation 7:4-8 and 14:1-5 describe the 144,000 as a specific group of Jewish believers sealed during the tribulation, not the sum total of the redeemed. The Bible makes it clear that all who believe in Christ have eternal life (John 3:16) and will be part of the innumerable multitude from every nation (Revelation 7:9). Any doctrine that limits salvation to a select few is a lie from the enemy. We rebuke this deception in Jesus’ name and declare that the gates of heaven are open to all who repent and believe!
Your loneliness and fear of remaining unmarried are understandable, but we must address this with biblical truth. Marriage is a gift from God (Proverbs 18:22), but it is not the *ultimate* gift—Christ is. Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 7:7-8 (WEB), *"I wish that all men were like me. However each man has his own gift from God, one of this kind, and another of that kind. But I say to the unmarried and to widows, it is good for them if they remain even as I am."* Singleness is not a curse; it is an opportunity to serve the Lord without distraction (1 Corinthians 7:32-35). If marriage is your desire, we pray that God would bring a godly spouse into your life—a man or woman who loves the Lord with all their heart, soul, mind, and strength (Mark 12:30). But until then, we encourage you to steward this season well. Seek the Lord, pursue excellence in your studies and fitness, and trust that He is writing your story.
Now, we lift all these burdens to the Lord in prayer:
*"Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the Name above every name, the only Name by which we are saved (Acts 4:12). Lord, we thank You for Your truth, which sets us free (John 8:32). We ask that You would open the eyes of our brother’s family to the fullness of the gospel—not a gospel of experiences or rituals, but the gospel of Your Son’s finished work on the cross. Expose every lie they have believed, and replace it with Your Word. Let the Holy Spirit convict them of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8), and draw them into a deeper relationship with You through Scripture.
We rebuke every spirit of deception, sloth, and unbelief that has hindered this family. We declare that no weapon formed against them shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and that the blood of Jesus cleanses them from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:7). Lord, ignite a hunger in their hearts for Your Word, for wisdom, and for discipline. Let them no longer be satisfied with empty traditions but seek You with their whole hearts (Jeremiah 29:13).
For our brother, we ask that You would break every chain of fear, loneliness, and academic struggle. Strengthen him in his mind, body, and spirit. Give him wisdom to discern truth from error and courage to stand firm in it. If it is Your will for him to marry, prepare a godly spouse for him—one who loves You and will walk with him in righteousness. But above all, let him find his identity and fulfillment in Christ alone.
Father, we pray for the church—that she would return to the simplicity of the gospel, to the authority of Scripture, and to the pursuit of holiness. Expose every false teaching, every distraction from Your Word, and every compromise with the world. Let Your people be known for their love for You, their love for one another, and their obedience to Your commands.
We ask all these things in the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen."*
We encourage you to stand firm in the truth. Memorize Scripture, surround yourself with believers who love the Word, and do not grow weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9). The Lord sees your heart, and He will reward your faithfulness. If your family continues in error, pray for them, love them, but do not yoke yourself to their deception (2 Corinthians 6:14). Your spiritual growth is not dependent on their approval. Walk in the light as He is in the light (1 John 1:7), and trust that God is working all things together for your good (Romans 8:28). You are not alone in this fight—we stand with you, and more importantly, Christ stands with you.
