It’s difficult to trust in God

Anonymous

Beloved of All
When I’m failing at every worldly thing. My mother doesn’t stop reminding me of what a failure I am - I am not prim and proper she says, nor successful in my career. It hurts to hear and be reminded of my shortcomings in things I’ve tried to but can’t change. I have concentration and focus issues. I know God doesn’t measure success by worldly standards. Doesn’t change the fact that I’m miserable and behind others and have to deal with my mother’s disappointment, criticism, and insulting remarks every day. Where is God in all of this?

We hear the deep pain and exhaustion in your words, and we want you to know that your struggle is seen and understood. The weight of feeling like a failure by worldly standards—especially when those standards are reinforced by someone as close as your mother—can be crushing. But we want to remind you that God’s love for you is not measured by your achievements, your appearance, or your ability to meet the expectations of others. His love is unchanging, unshakable, and not dependent on your performance.

First, let us address the truth about where God is in your suffering. He is not distant or indifferent. The Bible tells us, *"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit"* (Psalm 34:18). He sees every tear, hears every sigh, and collects every moment of your pain in His hands. When you feel unseen, remember that Jesus Himself experienced rejection, misunderstanding, and even betrayal by those closest to Him. He knows what it is to be wounded by the words of others, and He is with you in this.

Your mother’s words may feel like daggers, but we must also speak truth into this situation. Scripture is clear that *"death and life are in the power of the tongue"* (Proverbs 18:21), and her words are causing you harm. While we are called to honor our parents (Exodus 20:12), this does not mean we must accept abuse or allow their words to define our worth. You are not a failure in God’s eyes, and her criticism does not reflect His heart toward you. We rebuke the spirit of condemnation that has taken root in your home, and we declare that you are fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14), chosen by God, and deeply loved.

Your struggles with concentration and focus are real, and we do not dismiss them. But we also want to encourage you that God can use even these challenges for His glory. The apostle Paul spoke of his own "thorn in the flesh" and how God’s strength was made perfect in his weakness (2 Corinthians 12:9). Your limitations do not limit God. He can work through them to show His power and grace in ways you may not yet see.

We also want to gently challenge the way you are measuring yourself against others. The world’s definition of success is fleeting and empty, but God’s definition is eternal. *"For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?"* (Mark 8:36). You are not behind in God’s timeline—you are exactly where He wants you to be for His purposes. His plans for you are for good, not for harm, to give you a future and a hope (Jeremiah 29:11).

Now, let us pray for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our brother/sister who is weary and heavy-laden. Lord, You see the pain in their heart, the weight of feeling like they don’t measure up, and the daily struggle against words that tear them down. We ask that You would bind up their wounds and pour Your healing balm over their soul. Remind them that their worth is found in You alone, not in the opinions of others or the standards of this world.

Father, we rebuke the spirit of condemnation that has spoken lies over them. We declare that they are Your beloved child, created with purpose and intention. Help them to see themselves through Your eyes—redeemed, cherished, and equipped for every good work You have prepared for them.

Lord, we ask that You would give them strength to endure their mother’s words without letting them take root in their heart. Give them wisdom in how to respond, whether it be with gentle correction, boundaries, or silence. Surround them with people who will speak life and truth into their situation.

We also pray for their struggles with focus and concentration. You are the God who calms the storm and brings order to chaos. We ask that You would quiet their mind and help them to fix their eyes on You. Give them clarity, patience, and the ability to trust in Your timing, even when it feels like they are falling behind.

Father, we ask that You would reveal Yourself to them in tangible ways. Show them that You are near, that You are working, and that You have not forgotten them. Let them experience Your peace that surpasses all understanding, guarding their heart and mind in Christ Jesus.

We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the One who bore our sorrows and carried our griefs. May our brother/sister feel Your presence today and know that they are never alone. Amen.

We want to leave you with this encouragement: God is not finished with you. The fact that you are seeking Him in the midst of your pain is evidence of His work in your life. Keep pressing into Him, even when it feels like He is silent. His timing is perfect, and His love for you is unwavering. You are not defined by your failures, your mother’s words, or the world’s standards. You are defined by Christ, and in Him, you are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37). Hold on to that truth, and let it be the anchor for your soul.

We hear your struggle, dear one, and we want you to know that you're not alone. It's tough when the very person who should be your biggest cheerleader seems to be your harshest critic. But remember, God's love for you isn't dependent on your mother's approval or your own achievements. He loves you just as you are.

It's like having a beautiful, handcrafted vase. No matter how many times it gets chipped or cracked, the artisan who made it still loves it and values it. That's how God sees you. He's not disappointed in you; He's working in you, even in your struggles.

We want to encourage you to keep seeking God, even when it feels like He's quiet. He's not distant; He's right there with you. And while you can't change your mother's words, you can choose how you respond to them. You don't have to accept every thought or feeling that comes your way. You can replace lies with truth, like this: "I am God's beloved child, and He is pleased with me."

Your struggles with focus and concentration are real, but they don't define you. They're just another opportunity for God to show His strength in your weakness. Trust that He's got a plan, and it's a good one.

Keep holding on, dear one. God is with you, and He's not finished with you yet. You are His masterpiece, and He's working in you to make you more like Jesus.
