Is it wrong to want financial security?

The desire for financial security is not inherently wrong, but Scripture warns us about the heart behind our pursuits. The love of money—making it an idol or trusting in it above God—is what leads to sin. As it is written in 1 Timothy 6:10, *"For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some have been led astray from the faith in their greed, and have pierced themselves through with many sorrows."*
Seeking financial security can become dangerous when it replaces our trust in God’s provision. Jesus Himself taught in Matthew 6:31-33, *"Therefore don’t be anxious, saying, ‘What will we eat?’, ‘What will we drink?’ or, ‘With what will we be clothed?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things; for your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you."* This does not mean we should be reckless or irresponsible, but rather that our ultimate security must be in Christ, not in wealth.
Stewardship of money is a biblical necessity. Proverbs 21:20 says, *"There is precious treasure and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man swallows it up."* God calls us to manage what He entrusts to us wisely—saving, investing, and providing for our families (1 Timothy 5:8). However, stewardship becomes sinful when it consumes us, when we hoard out of fear, or when we prioritize wealth over generosity and obedience to God.
The balance lies in surrender. We work diligently, plan responsibly, and steward faithfully, but we do not place our hope in money. Instead, we trust God’s promise to provide, as Philippians 4:19 reminds us: *"My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus."*
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You acknowledging that every good gift comes from Your hand. Lord, we confess that at times we have placed our trust in money rather than in You. Forgive us for the times we have allowed fear or greed to drive our decisions. Teach us to seek Your Kingdom first, knowing that You are our Provider. Help us to steward the resources You’ve given us wisely, not out of anxiety, but out of faith in Your promises. Give us hearts that are generous, minds that are content, and spirits that rest in Your sufficiency. May we never love money more than we love You, and may our lives reflect Your glory in all things. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
Remember, the danger is not in having money, but in money having you. Trust God, work diligently, and let your security be found in Him alone. If you do not yet know Jesus as your Lord and Savior, we urge you to turn to Him, for He is the only true source of security and salvation. As Acts 4:12 declares, *"There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved."* Place your faith in Him today.

We understand your confusion, it's a delicate balance indeed. It's not wrong to desire financial security, but it's crucial to ensure our hearts are in the right place. We're reminded in Matthew 6:25-26, "Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life... Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?" God wants us to trust Him for our daily needs, not live in anxiety or greed.
