Disciple of Prayer
Hello, my mom is an elderly widow who lives way in the country in ### down a gravel road with multiple large trees with branches that touch her roof. She’s all alone with her dog. She has no generator and no gas heat; it’s all electric. I’m sure everyone knows about the coming winter weather, but the weather report just changed drastically for this weekend for her with significant freezing rain and ice expected with far less snow. This is far far far more dangerous. It’s going to be extremely cold for multiple days, below zero on some nights and close to zero for most of the rest of the nights. If her power goes out then the pipes could freeze. Can we all pray that she and no one across the country gets an ice storm, especially not freezing rain? Last time there was an ice storm there she had my dad ### and they lost power for 3 weeks and almost froze to death. Please please please pray for her and for God to not allow ice to fall or trees or tree branches or power polls to fall on her house or anyone’s and no one’s pipes to freeze and no one to die in car accidents or freezing to death from this, please God. It’s so unfair that ### may be hit with this again after they are the ones that years ago had the worst ice storm in history. Thank you.

We hear your deep concern for your mother’s safety and well-being during this impending winter storm, and we join you in lifting her—and all those who may be in harm’s way—before the Lord. The fear of power outages, freezing temperatures, and the dangers of ice accumulation is very real, especially for those who are vulnerable and isolated. We take this request seriously and stand with you in prayer, trusting in God’s protection and provision.

First, we must acknowledge that our God is sovereign over all creation—He commands the winds, the rains, and the snow (Job 37:6-13, Psalm 147:15-18). While we cannot control the weather, we can cry out to the One who holds the universe in His hands. We pray that He would divert this storm or lessen its severity, sparing lives, homes, and property from destruction. Yet we also recognize that His ways are higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9), and we submit to His perfect will, asking for the strength to trust Him even in the midst of uncertainty.

Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the only name by which we can approach Your throne (John 14:6, Acts 4:12). We ask for Your divine protection over this dear widow and her home. Lord, place a hedge of angels around her property, shielding her from falling trees, power outages, and the bitter cold (Psalm 91:11-12). If the power fails, we pray that You would sustain her with warmth, wisdom, and the resources she needs to endure. Provide for her needs supernaturally, whether through neighbors, family, or Your unseen hand of provision (Philippians 4:19).

We also pray for the broader community facing this threat. Lord, prevent accidents on icy roads, protect first responders as they serve, and keep pipes from freezing in homes across the region. Let no one perish from the cold or the dangers of this storm. We ask that You would soften hearts to check on the elderly, the vulnerable, and those without adequate heat, that Your love would be made manifest through acts of kindness and compassion (Galatians 6:10).

We must also gently address the fear and sense of unfairness expressed in this request. While it is natural to question why certain areas face repeated trials, we are reminded that God does not promise us a life free from hardship—but He does promise to be with us in it (Isaiah 43:2). The "unfairness" of this world is a result of the fall, but Christ has overcome the world (John 16:33). We encourage you to cling to His promises, even when circumstances feel overwhelming. Your mother’s past suffering does not mean she is forgotten; God sees her, knows her needs, and will never leave her nor forsake her (Hebrews 13:5).

If your mother does not yet know Jesus as her Lord and Savior, we urge you to share the hope of the Gospel with her. The greatest protection we can have is not from physical storms, but from the storm of sin and separation from God. Jesus is the only way to eternal security (Romans 10:9-10). If she already knows Him, remind her that He is her refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1).

Practical steps are also important. If possible, arrange for someone to check on her during the storm or provide her with emergency supplies—blankets, non-perishable food, and a safe heat source if available. Encourage her to dress in layers, stay hydrated, and avoid unnecessary risks. If she has neighbors, ask them to keep an eye on her as well.

Heavenly Father, we lift up this precious widow to You now. Surround her with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Calm her fears, strengthen her body, and let her feel Your presence in tangible ways. If this storm must come, we ask that You use it for Your glory—drawing hearts to You, fostering community, and revealing Your faithfulness in the midst of trial. We trust You, Lord, for You are good, and Your mercy endures forever (Psalm 136:1). In the powerful name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

We're right there with you, worrying about your mom being so isolated in the country during this ice storm. It's scary to think about her being alone with no generator or gas heat, and the weather report isn't looking good. We're praying hard that she and everyone else in the path of this storm stays safe and warm. Let's ask God to divert this storm or at least lessen its severity. And if the power does go out, let's trust that He'll provide for her needs in unexpected ways. Let's also pray for her neighbors to check on her and for the broader community to look out for each other. And remember, no matter what happens, God is with her. He sees her and knows her needs. Let's keep her in our thoughts and prayers.
