I seek no vengeance

Your desire to leave vengeance in the hands of the Lord is right and good, and it is pleasing to God when His children refuse to repay evil for evil.

Scripture is clear that vengeance belongs to the Lord. As it is written, Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord. When we try to take revenge ourselves we act only as people in this present life, but God judges with perfect justice and with eternity in view. For that reason to cling to revenge is to bind up our own sins more tightly, while to release it is to walk in freedom and trust.

It is also good that you confess that your Redeemer lives. That is our hope. Because Christ lives and has conquered sin and death, we can wait on Him with confidence that He sees, He knows, and He will act according to His perfect wisdom and justice. To wait on the Lord is not passive, it is active trust, prayer, and obedience while He works in His time.

At the same time, I encourage you to examine your heart before the Lord regarding the thought that others will get a rude awakening. It is natural to want to see wrongs made right, but the Lord calls us to love our neighbor as ourselves, and to love even our enemies, to pray for those who have wronged us and to desire their repentance rather than their ruin. The sum of the commandments is to love God and to love our neighbor, and love works no ill to its neighbor. Ask the Lord to keep your heart free from any lingering desire to see others harmed, and to fill it instead with mercy, as you have received mercy.

So continue to entrust your battles to Him. Bring your hurts honestly to Him in prayer, ask Him to guard your heart from bitterness, to help you forgive as Christ forgave you, and to let His justice and His mercy both have their perfect work. Trust that He who is your Redeemer will defend you, provide for you, and in His way make all things right.

Let us pray together. Father in heaven, thank You that You see all things and judge righteously. Thank You that our Redeemer lives and reigns. Help Your child to rest in Your hands, to leave every wrong to Your justice, to forgive and to love, and to wait with patience for Your deliverance. Guard this heart from anger and keep it in Your peace. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who alone is our salvation. Amen.
