I Need Help Understanding Fasting

Can someone please help me understand fasting? Fasting and Prayer? How and Why's do we do it? The Do's and the Don't? Does it really work? Etc...
I'm really trying to learn and understand. Thanks Cindy

Most simply put, fasting is giving up food to spend additional time with God. Scripture gives examples of partial fasts (like Daniel...who gave up breads, sweets) and full fast (it is speculated that Christ endured a full fast, water only). Likewise, scripture gives us examples of fast lasting anywhere from a single day (sun down to sun down) to fasts lasting 40 days.

The length and type are between you and what God places on your heart. And the fact you are asking, let's me know God has placed this on your heart. Fasting is NOT about weight loss, it's about purifying your body, mind, soul. It's about dedicating time to God. Christ himself said, "WHEN you fast..." not if you fast, but like me it looks like you are having to learn for yourself. It isn't something that most churches talk about on Sunday morning....but it's there, in black and white.

Most often when we see fasting in scripture, we find someone who has troubles ahead or something that are unable to conquer on their own. They show God that they are able to discipline themselves and lean completely on him. And yes....it works. Fasting seems to draw you near to God in ways that prayer alone doesn't. Therefore, many people suggest fasting when there is something in your life that only God can conquer (sin, addiction, illness). But I have found that fasting solely for the opportunity to worship and draw near to God is equally fulfilling. When you draw near to God, he draws near to you.

As for dos/dont...most people would say someone should complete a lengthy full fast (i.e. water for 30 days) the first time. I would be inclined to agree, unless you know that God has placed this on your heart. He will bring you thru what ever he asks of you. Also anytime you fast...especially for longer than 1-3 days, it is VERY important that you don't jump at the first burger you see once your fast ends (work you way back into solid foods). And most importantly, do not use fasting just to loose weight, it then looses its purpose, and you will gain it ALL back the second you resume eatting.

I'm no guru....but feel free to email me. Someone I would recommend if you just want extra research is Jentezen Franklin ( JentezenFranklin.org ). It seems to be the call that God placed on his life, and he leads his church in an annual fast. He is merely a Christian man/minister, but the presence of God is clearly upon him.

In the meantime, I am praying for you. God will bless you if you decide to move forward in this discipline.

Fasting doesn't do anything for God...it does it for you and gets God's attention that you are serious about your walk...it is also required because God knows it get our senses to be sensitive to His will...it makes us suffer in our flesh and the Spirit is able to grow because we are getting our flesh under submission to desires and sin...when we fast it brings us closer to Him...

Never "feel" guilty if you fail...just try again...it's not getting you "black" marks in heaven if you fail...I have fasted anything from bread for a month to desserts for the month to an Esther fast with no food or water for 3 days...40 day fast eating once a day..to Daniel Fast...

I have told others who smoke to fast your cigarettes offer them to God and show Him your serious...if your addicted to Liquor...fast it....for a day...then next week do it again for 2 days then 3....and so on...the cigarettes will go...fast things that are important to you...offer it up to GOD and Fast it....if food doesn't bother you it doesn't do much to give it up...(that's my opinion just so you know) discipline....gets God's attention and He is moved to compassion and He answers...because He can not lie...

Make sure your health is good and your if you take meds find out if it's OK....Everyone can fast something...even if on meds..give up soda, bread, desserts, whatever you love ice cream...sounds silly...try it it's hard every person you know will bring you "something they just made" that has what you can not eat written all over it...never to come again!....lol..it's truth...someone just got a bread machine and wanted to give you some...lol...it's truth...but everyone!!!!!! can fast something and get God's attention and please Him with obedience...He tells us to fast....

Fasting opens up the door so to speak because it's choice and self discipline to get rid of yourself...which is sooooo hard to do.... GOD loves that....it's a part of worship and it's a sacrifice..

Praying for Peace has it pretty down pack..good advice...God bless and get closer to Him...More of Him less of us....

I've prayed numerous times about a subject that I'm still waiting for an answer on. But from time to time I tell the Lord what it is i need and my prayer stops. It stops when I remember Matthew 7:7-8. I stop mid prayer as I remember to keep seeking and keep knocking. I pray for understanding.
