I fell into lust again

We hear the pain and honesty in your confession and we thank you for bringing this struggle into the light. What you describe is the very battle the apostle Paul wrote about in Romans 7:15 and Romans 7:19, wanting to do what is right and yet doing what you hate. That inner conflict does not make you despicable, it shows that the Holy Spirit is convicting you and that your new heart in Christ does not want this sin. At the same time we must lovingly rebuke lust itself, because God calls us to holiness.

Jesus said in Matthew 5:28 that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart. And we are commanded in 1 Corinthians 6:18 to flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. Lust is not harmless, it is sin against God and against your own body, and it is meant by God to be fulfilled only within the covenant of marriage between a man and a woman as Hebrews 13:4 teaches, let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the bed be undefiled, but God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterers. When we give into lust outside of that design we step outside of God's will.

Yet we do not want you to remain in shame. There is a difference between conviction that leads to repentance and condemnation that leads to despair. Romans 8:1 tells us there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who don't walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness in 1 John 1:9. God does not call you despicable, He calls you His child to be cleansed and restored. He invites you to pray with David in Psalm 51:10, create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and find forgiveness and power over sin. Jesus said in John 14:6, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 declares there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. It is by believing in Jesus Christ, that He died for our sins and rose again, and by calling on His name that we are saved and given a new power to overcome. Without Jesus we cannot defeat lust in our own strength, but with Him we can walk by the Spirit so we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh as Galatians 5:16 promises.

We want to encourage you with the promise in 1 Corinthians 10:13, no temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. God always provides an escape, to turn away, to flee, to close the window, to turn off the device, to call a brother, to pray. We encourage you to make that escape practical, to remove sources of temptation, to bring this struggle to a trusted mature Christian brother for accountability, to fill your mind daily with Scripture and prayer so your mind is renewed, and when temptation comes to immediately cry out to Jesus and flee.

We pray together for you now. Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and we lift up our brother who is battling lust. We confess this sin before You and we ask for Your forgiveness and cleansing through the blood of Jesus. Create in him a clean heart and renew a right spirit within him. Give him strength to flee sexual immorality and to walk by Your Spirit and not fulfill the desires of the flesh. Show him the way of escape in every temptation and give him courage to take it. Replace shame with the assurance that he is forgiven and loved in Christ, and help him to see himself as You see him, redeemed and being made holy. Teach him to guard his eyes and his heart and to pursue purity that honors marriage and honors You. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit and Your Word daily so that he may stand strong. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus, our only Savior and hope, amen.

We hear how heavy and confusing this feels, to do something you didn't even want to do and then be left calling yourself despicable. That word tells us how much shame you are carrying right now, and we want you to know you are not pushed away for being honest about it.

That experience of wanting one thing and doing another is so common in this struggle, and shame often makes it worse. When we feel despicable we tend to pull away and try to handle it alone, but isolation is what keeps this cycle going. Bringing it into the light with another person takes away some of its power.

If it would help, one steady next step is to not carry this alone going forward. Consider asking one trusted, same-gender believer who walks closely with Jesus if you can be honest with them when temptation comes, not just after. And while you are clear-headed and want to do what is right, decide in advance to clear out one specific thing that makes you vulnerable and to have a plan for what you will do instead when the urge comes.

We are praying for you and we care about you, not just this struggle.

Father, we lift this one to You who sees the heart that did not want to give in. Cover them with Your mercy today, lift the weight of shame, and give them courage to walk honestly with You and with a trusted brother or sister. Give them strength for the next step and quiet confidence that You are near and at work. In Jesus' name, amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your honest and broken confession is itself a mercy, for the heart that calls itself despicable has at least ceased from guile. There are many who sin and yet make no confession, who will not allow themselves to see the heinousness of it, and put a fearful strain upon conscience to hush its protests. But you have not done so. You have laid your sin bare before God, and that heart searching and self abhorrence, though painful, is the very thing which endears Christ to the soul as the great Savior of unworthy ones.

Do not wonder that you found yourself doing what you did not even want to do. Scripture gives the pedigree of sin, that lust when it has conceived brings forth sin, and sin when it is finished brings forth death. Any sin whatever, if we cling to it and love it, will bring forth death. The trial may come from without, but the lust is within, and when we do not watch and pray and live as in the presence of the all seeing eye, we are soon overcome. This is why repentance and faith must go together. The repentance that ejects sin as an evil tenant is inseparable from the faith which admits Christ to be the sole master of the heart. A repentance which only trembles under terror, or which confesses with the lips while the heart still loves the sin, is a carnal repentance after the manner of the flesh. True repentance, which is worked in the renewed heart by the Holy Spirit, gives God glory. It says, Lord, I have no claim upon You, I have no right but the right to be punished, and if You pardon me it must be of Your free mercy alone. It looks out of self to Christ, and to Christ only.

And here is your hope, that there is forgiveness with God. It is a divine forgiveness, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for Mine own sake. It is a surprising forgiveness, so surprising that God speaks as if amazed that such sins should be remitted, and yet He does remit them. It is a complete forgiveness. Suppose you say to your creditor, I have nothing to pay with, and he replies, I forgive you all the debt. So the Lord proclaims oblivion to all your debt when you put your trust in Christ. The amount of guilt is put entirely out of consideration, for He forgives not on account of the sinner, but for His own sake and for the sake of the matchless Atonement which covers all guilt. If you have been the chief of sinners, there is forgiveness for the chief of sinners, and God can bestow it now. There is forgiveness, there was forgiveness, there will be forgiveness as long as life lasts, for the act of forgiveness in Christ is a continuous and eternal one.

Therefore come at once to Him who alone can remove both guilt and guile. The work of the Spirit is linked with the work of the Son, when the Son removes guilt, the Spirit removes guile and changes the nature. Believe in the sin forgiving God and accept the Atonement which covers all your guilt, and you shall be among the blessed whose sin is not imputed. Cultivate daily repentance and heart searching, seek after perfect purity of life, and delight to remember that you live in the presence of God. Without holiness no man shall see the Lord, and charity without purity will be of no use, yet purity is not won by our own resolve but by fleeing to Christ and abiding in Him.

May the Lord grant you that godly sorrow which makes a rainbow with tears of grief for sin and glances of hope at the love of Christ and His finished work. Confess your sin fully, turn from it, look to Jesus alone to save you, and ask Him to keep you and to make you to hate the sin you once loved. There is forgiveness with Him, and where the offense went, from that very place the forgiveness comes.
