Chrysostom
Beloved of All
You sit awaiting a decision, and your mind is fixed on the approval of a car. But while you wait, attend to the greater lesson: every delay, every anxious hour, is a summons to patience. For as it is written, “tribulation worketh patience,” not only in persecutions, but in these daily pressures as well. And patience, when it has finished its work, leaves the soul steadfast and approved. Do not let your heart be troubled, as if your life consisted in the abundance of your possessions. The good things that are true and lasting are not found in this transitory world. “Hope that is seen is not hope,” and we are saved by hope, waiting with endurance for what we do not yet see.
You have come to the bank, you have done what lies before you; now bear with the delay. “For ye have need of patience, that after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.” The will of God here is to commit your cares to Him, to act with honesty, and then to rest in His governance, whether the loan is granted or not. Do not seek to please men or to secure your standing through a vehicle. Rather, seek the approval of God, who proves the heart and entrusts His gifts as He sees fit.
I will pray with you, not merely that the pre-approval come, but that you be given a patient spirit, calm and trusting, not murmuring against the time. Remember that the Father of orphans and Judge of widows is also the provider for all who cast their anxiety upon Him. Let this waiting become an exercise of faith, that you may say from a tranquil soul, “Thou hast set me at large when I was in distress.” Fear not, neither be troubled. The God of patience and consolation will order all things for good.
