How to recognize ###'s voice

Sometimes when I'm in a problem, I try for a certain way to better it, but something tells me to hold off, not do it. The problem I have with that, I don't know, is it God telling me to not worry about it, He has a different way, or God gave me the way, and it's the devil trying to hold me back by not doing something to help myself. How to tell? The discernment can help anyone.

We understand your struggle to discern whose voice you are hearing in times of decision—whether it is the Lord guiding you, the enemy attempting to deceive you, or even your own thoughts and fears. This is a common battle for believers, and we want to encourage you with Scripture and prayer to help you grow in discernment.

First, we must affirm that God does speak to His children, and He desires for us to know His voice. Jesus said in John 10:27, "My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me." The key to recognizing His voice lies in knowing Him intimately through His Word, prayer, and fellowship with other believers. The more we abide in Christ and His Word, the clearer His voice becomes.

The enemy, on the other hand, seeks to steal, kill, and destroy (John 10:10). He often speaks through fear, doubt, and confusion, trying to lead us away from God’s will. If the voice you hear contradicts Scripture, promotes sin, or leads you away from trusting God, it is not from Him. For example, if you feel prompted to act in a way that dishonors God or goes against His commands, that is not His voice. The enemy may also try to discourage you from taking godly action by making you doubt or fear.

To discern God’s voice, we must test every thought and prompting against Scripture. 1 John 4:1 says, "Beloved, don’t believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world." God will never lead you to do something that contradicts His Word. His voice will align with His character—love, peace, patience, kindness, and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23). His guidance will also bring a sense of peace, even if the path is difficult, because He promises to be with us (Isaiah 41:10).

We also encourage you to seek wisdom from mature believers who can help you discern God’s will. Proverbs 11:14 says, "Where there is no counsel, the people fall, but in the multitude of counselors there is safety." Sometimes, God speaks through the wisdom and encouragement of others who are walking closely with Him.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus, asking for Your wisdom and discernment for our brother/sister who is seeking to know Your voice. Lord, Your Word says that Your sheep hear Your voice, and we ask that You would tune their ears to recognize it clearly. Remove any confusion, doubt, or fear that the enemy may be using to deceive them. Help them to test every thought and prompting against Your Word, and give them the courage to follow Your leading.

Father, we ask that You would surround them with godly counsel—believers who can speak truth and wisdom into their life. Give them a hunger for Your Word and a desire to abide in You daily. When they are uncertain, remind them of Your promises and Your faithfulness. Let them experience Your peace that surpasses all understanding as they trust in You.

Lord, we rebuke any voice that does not align with Your truth. We declare that the enemy has no power over Your children, and we stand firm in the authority of Jesus’ name. Help our brother/sister to walk in confidence, knowing that You are guiding their steps. May they grow in discernment and faith as they seek You with all their heart.

In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to spend time in God’s Word daily, asking Him to speak to you through it. Meditate on passages like Psalm 25:4-5, which says, "Show me your ways, Yahweh. Teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my salvation. I wait for you all day long." As you wait on the Lord, He will direct your steps (Proverbs 3:5-6).

If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, we urge you to do so today. It is only through Him that we have access to the Father and the gift of the Holy Spirit, who guides us into all truth (John 14:6, John 16:13). Confess your sins, believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and commit to following Him. This is the first and most important step in discerning God’s voice.

We've been there too, friend. It's like trying to tell whose voice is on the other end of a static-filled line, right? But remember, God's voice is always clear and loving, even if the path He's guiding us on isn't always easy. Let's keep seeking Him together.

When we're unsure, it's like we're trying to find our way in a dense fog. But God's Word is our lighthouse, guiding us safely home. Let's keep our eyes on it, meditating on verses like Psalm 32:8, "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you."

Let's also lift each other up in prayer, like we're doing here. When we pray for one another, we're not just asking for clarity, but also for God to strengthen our faith and trust in Him. So, let's keep praying, keep seeking, and keep trusting that God will make His voice clear to us, in Jesus' name.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy.

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
