Healing the sick and infirm today is just as real and available as it was when Jesus walked the earth. One of the main reasons it is not seen very much these days is because of unbelief. We tend to believe in the modern medical system to take care of our problems. A lot of people "pray" for healing "if it is God's Will". If it is not God's Will to heal a person then that must mean it is God's Will for them to be sick? If it is God's Will for a person to be sick, then why are people going to the modern medical system to get out of the Will of God? Not once did Jesus pass up a person that wanted healing and tell them they are sick because it is God's Will for them to be sick, or blind, or lame, or have leprosy. Jesus even said He only did what His Father was doing. Jesus and His Father were in agreement for all the healings Jesus did.
Only one time did Jesus say, “Father, if you are willing, let this cup pass from me; however not my will, but yours be done.†Jesus already knew His Father's Will, but was asking if there was another way to accomplish salvation for mankind. Folks are adding this phrase onto prayers, thinking it is going to help with healing someone, but it is only a prayer of unbelief. Folks beg God to place His healing hand on the sick person and then add, "in the name of Jesus". That is a prayer of unbelief. Jesus never begged for healing, or prayed for someone's healing. He never added the phrase "if its God's Will" when He healed. When Lazarus was raised form the dead, Jesus spoke, " Lazarus come forth." Jesus thanked the Father that He heard Jesus, so it was like Jesus was doing this because of a decision Jesus made. Jesus had compassion for the family of Lazarus. Jesus did not ask if it was the Father's Will to raise Lazarus from the dead. When Jesus sent the apostles out one time He told them to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead. Jesus already knew His FAthers Will was life, for all, and raising the dead was what the Father wanted.
So, how does a person heal? Jesus told us to "speak to the mountain to move, believing, and it would move". Jesus calmed the wind and waves by speaking to them. Jesus cursed the fig tree and it withered. Faith was involved. Sometimes Jesus told a person that it was their faith that healed them. Other times it was the faith of someone else, like the centurion for his servant. Or the gentile woman at the supper table when Jesus told her 'No" to heal her daughter of demons. She refused the answer she was given and told Jesus that even the dogs get the crumbs from the table. Jesus then said her faith resulted in the healing of her daughter. Jesus spoke, and it happened. Jesus even healed the ear of a person when Peter cut it off with a sword in the garden of gethsemane. The man did not even ask to be healed, but Jesus had compassion for the man.
Is it God's Will for all people to be healed? Isaiah 53:5 ways that "by His stripes we are healed", and 1 Peter 2:24 says that "by His stripes we were healed". Jesus took all disease and sickness onto Himself just like He took all sins and punishment onto Himself. Peter demonstrated how to heal a lame man at the gate beautiful when Peter had the man look at him and said, "silver and gold have I none, but what I have give I thee, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, rise up and walk". Peter did not beg God or Jesus to " touch the man with their healing touch", Peter spoke and it happened. People placed sick people along the road so that Peters shadow would fall on them and they would be healed. Clothing and kerchiefs which Paul had worn or touched were taken to people and they were healed. All done without begging or asking the Will of God be done. They knew God's Will was for all people to walk in health, just like Jesus knew the Fathers Will.
Jesus said that believers would do the same works that He did, and greater. Jesus said in the Great Commission that believers shall lay hands on the sick and they would recover, a prophecy and a command. Jesus did not say believers would pray for the sick and they would recover, or ask God's Will be done for healing. When Jesus sent the apostles out Jesus did not say to find the sick and lepers and dead that it was God's Will to heal. It was a statement to heal all they came across.
We are ambassadors of Jesus here on earth, His hands are working through us to reach others. We are to follow His example.
One definition of insanity is to keep doing something the same way and hoping for a different outcome. Prayer for healing can fall into this definition. Most folks dont know of any other way. Churches do not teach of any other way. But there is another way, and that is "do it like Jesus did it." We may not see instant results, but we are to walk by faith, not by sight. The signs and wonders may follow us, but out job is to lay hands on the sick, or speak health healing and wholeness into a person. We speak life to the dead because Jesus said for us to do it. Jesus could not command us to do it unless we were capable or it and able to.
If God told us to heal the sick through Jesus words and commands to heal the sick, raise the dead, and cast out devils, then it does not make any sense to ask him to touch someone with His healing hands when people are His healing hands on this earth. We are the hands of Jesus and God here on this earth now. Our mouth should be speaking the words of Jesus just like when He walked this earth. It is God's Will for all people to be healed, healthy, and whole. It is the will of the demonic realm for people to be sick and infirm and destroyed. Can an army be expected to fight an enemy while lying helpless in bed sick and infirm and unable to work? How can we obey the command of Jesus "GO" if we are unable to go anywhere because of sickness or infirmity?
