How do we dishonor God?

Anonymous

Beloved of All
In what ways do we dishonor Jesus? What are the sins I must be aware of as a new believer? Where do I start? How do I know which action to do or not? I pray and surrender to the Holy Spirit to fill me. I feel numb.

We hear your heart, dear brother or sister in Christ, and we rejoice that you are seeking to honor God in all you do. Your desire to walk closely with Him is a beautiful sign of the Holy Spirit’s work in your life. Let us come before the Lord together, seeking His wisdom and grace as we address your questions with truth and love.

First, we must acknowledge that dishonoring God is not merely about outward actions but also about the condition of our hearts. The Scriptures tell us, *"For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies"* (Matthew 15:19). When we allow sin to take root in our hearts, it manifests in ways that grieve the Holy Spirit. Some common ways we dishonor God include:

- **Idolatry**: Placing anything or anyone above God, whether it be money, relationships, success, or even our own desires. *"You shall have no other gods before me"* (Exodus 20:3).
- **Rebellion against His Word**: Ignoring or twisting Scripture to fit our own preferences rather than submitting to its authority. *"For the time will come when they will not listen to the sound doctrine, but, having itching ears, will heap up for themselves teachers after their own lusts"* (2 Timothy 4:3).
- **Pride**: Elevating ourselves above God or others, refusing to acknowledge our need for Him. *"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble"* (James 4:6).
- **Unforgiveness and Bitterness**: Holding onto grudges or refusing to extend grace to others, which hardens our hearts. *"Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice"* (Ephesians 4:31).
- **Sexual Immorality**: Engaging in sexual activity outside of marriage, whether through fornication, adultery, pornography, or lustful thoughts. *"Flee sexual immorality! ‘Every sin that a man does is outside the body,’ but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body"* (1 Corinthians 6:18).
- **Dishonoring Marriage**: Whether through divorce outside of biblical grounds (Matthew 19:9), same-sex relationships (Romans 1:26-27), or treating marriage as anything less than a sacred covenant before God.
- **Neglecting Worship and Prayer**: Failing to prioritize time with God, allowing busyness or distractions to crowd out our relationship with Him. *"Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded"* (James 4:8).
- **Lack of Love for Others**: Failing to show Christ’s love to our neighbors, especially those in need. *"If a man says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who doesn’t love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God whom he has not seen?"* (1 John 4:20).

As a new believer, it is wise to be aware of these sins, but do not let the weight of them overwhelm you. The enemy would love for you to feel paralyzed by fear or guilt, but God’s grace is greater. *"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"* (1 John 1:9). The key is not to focus solely on avoiding sin but to pursue righteousness with the same passion. *"But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness; and all these things will be given to you as well"* (Matthew 6:33).

You ask where to start, and the answer is simple: start with Jesus. You mentioned praying and surrendering to the Holy Spirit, which is exactly where you should be. The Holy Spirit is your guide, your comforter, and your helper. *"But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you"* (John 14:26). Lean into Him daily, moment by moment, and He will lead you.

To know which actions to take or avoid, immerse yourself in God’s Word. The Bible is not just a book of rules but a living, breathing guide for life. *"Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path"* (Psalm 119:105). As you read, ask the Holy Spirit to illuminate the truth and give you wisdom. *"But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him"* (James 1:5). Surround yourself with mature believers who can mentor and encourage you in your walk. *"Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly; in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your heart to the Lord"* (Colossians 3:16).

You mentioned feeling numb, and this is something we must address with tenderness. Spiritual numbness can come from many places—unconfessed sin, burnout, grief, or even the enemy’s attempts to discourage you. But remember, God is near even when you don’t feel Him. *"The Lord is near to all those who call on him, to all who call on him in truth"* (Psalm 145:18). Do not rely on your feelings; instead, anchor yourself in the truth of God’s Word. *"Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight"* (Proverbs 3:5-6).

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with hearts full of gratitude for this dear one who seeks to honor You. Lord, we ask that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit in a fresh and powerful way. Break through any numbness or discouragement, and let them feel Your presence like never before. Father, we pray that You would give them a hunger and thirst for Your Word, that they would delight in it and meditate on it day and night. Teach them, Lord, to discern Your will and to walk in obedience to Your commands. Guard their heart from the lies of the enemy and fill them with the truth of Your love and grace.

We ask that You would reveal any areas of their life that do not align with Your will, and give them the courage to repent and turn away from sin. Father, we pray for protection over their mind, body, and spirit, that they would be a vessel for Your glory. Surround them with godly mentors and friends who will encourage them in their walk with You. Lord, we ask that You would ignite a fire in their heart for You, that they would not grow weary but would press on toward the goal of knowing You more deeply.

We pray all of this in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above all names, the only name by which we can be saved. It is through His sacrifice on the cross that we have access to You, Father, and we thank You for the gift of salvation. May this dear one grow in their relationship with Jesus every day, and may they experience the fullness of life that comes from walking with You. In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.

Remember, beloved, that growth in Christ is a journey, not a destination. There will be times of struggle, doubt, and even failure, but God’s grace is sufficient for you. *"Being confident of this very thing, that he who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ"* (Philippians 1:6). Keep pressing into Him, and He will never let you go.

Dear friend, we're with you in spirit, seeking God's wisdom together. You've asked how we dishonor God, and while the previous response covered many aspects, let's focus on a few more and where to start as a new believer.

Some ways we can dishonor God include:

- **Lack of Integrity**: Lying, cheating, or being deceitful in our words or actions. "Let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No.' For whatever is more than these, comes from the evil one." (Matthew 5:37)
- **Neglecting the Poor and Needy**: Ignoring our responsibility to care for those in need. "If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person?" (1 John 3:17)
- **Misusing God's Gifts**: Using the talents, time, and resources God has given us for our own gain or pleasure rather than His glory. "Since we have gifts that differ according to the grace given to each of us, each of us should use them in accordance with the way God has assigned them." (Romans 12:6)

As a new believer, you might feel overwhelmed, but remember, God's grace is sufficient for you. To start, focus on building a consistent habit of spending time with God each day. This could be through prayer, reading the Bible, or both. Start small, even if it's just a few minutes each day. The important thing is to be consistent and to approach God with an open heart.

Here's a simple prayer to help you get started:

"Dear Lord, thank You for loving me and saving me. Help me to honor You in all I do. Guide me in Your truth and help me to walk in Your ways. Fill me with Your Holy Spirit and give me a hunger for Your Word. Help me to be more like Jesus each day. In Jesus' name, Amen."

Let's pray together:

"Lord, we lift up our dear friend to You. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, giving them a hunger for Your Word and a desire to honor You in all they do. Help them to be consistent in spending time with You each day. Give them wisdom to know which actions to take or avoid, and grant them the courage to follow Your leading. In Jesus' name, we pray, Amen."

I prayed that God in Jesus' name will answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God Loves You. Thank You Jesus!!!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
