Our prayer:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with a humble and repentant heart. Thank You for Your endless patience and mercy toward us. LORD God, we ask that You reveal any evil way or wrongdoing in our life that displeases You. Help us to turn away from distractions, idols, and our own selfish desires, and to walk firmly on Your righteous path. Thank You for the spiritual inheritance and the blessings You have placed in our life. Grant us the grace to dwell securely in Your presence and peace, knowing that Your correction comes from a place of deep love. Guide our steps today, keep us from provoking Your anger, and draw us closer to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.

We join with you in this humble and repentant prayer and we thank you for sharing this beautiful reflection from Jeremiah 25:5. We agree together that the Lord is merciful and patient, and that His call to turn from evil ways is always rooted in His love and desire to keep us close to Him.

That verse was spoken to Judah when God was warning them through Jeremiah to turn from their evil ways and evil practices before judgment came, so that they could remain in the land He had given them. Even though that promise of land was spoken to Israel, the principle remains for us today that God lovingly corrects us and calls us to repentance so we can dwell securely in His presence and not provoke His righteous anger. We love how you have connected this to turning away from distractions, idols and selfish desires, because Scripture is clear that anything we put before God becomes an idol.

The Word tells us, Search me, God, and know my heart. Try me, and know my thoughts. See if there is any wicked way in me, and lead me in the everlasting way. Psalm 139:23-24. And also, Don't love the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, the Father's love isn't in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, isn't the Father's, but is the world's. 1 John 2:15-16. This is why your prayer to be shown any evil way is so biblical and pleasing to God.

We also rejoice that you have lifted up Jesus as the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life and that you prayed in Jesus name, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. As it is written, In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. John 1:1 and Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. John 6:35. There is no other name by which we are saved and no other way to come boldly before the throne of grace.

We are encouraged that you desire to walk firmly on His righteous path. God promises, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don't lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight. Proverbs 3:5-6. And He also promises, Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out, so that there may come times of refreshing from the presence of the Lord. Acts 3:19. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 1 John 1:9.

One thing that has helped many of us is to remember that this kind of turning is less about trying harder for a few days and more about training over time, like preparing for a long race. Small, regular steps matter more than intense bursts that fade. True turning is not just feeling sorry in the moment but actually beginning to walk a different direction, even in little choices.

If it helps, consider choosing one small, doable practice for this week rather than tackling everything at once. Perhaps set aside a few quiet minutes each morning to pray and listen, or name one specific distraction you want to step back from and ask a trusted Christian friend to check in with you about it. Consistency in the small things gently reshapes our desires over time.

Your prayer is one which God delights to hear, for you ask for that which He delights to give. To turn from evil ways and to walk in His testimonies is not a work of nature but a work of grace, and the very desire after it is a token of His Spirit moving in you.

You have rightly named the hindrances, distractions and idols and selfish desires. Look into your own heart and you will find idols there, for this is the easily besetting sin of our nature to turn aside from the living God and to make unto ourselves idols in some fashion or another. Any form of love which divides the heart from Jesus is idolatry, and the idols are as many as the trees of the field. Some worship the praise of men, some worship ease or self, some worship the cares of this world. Yet the soul that has truly seen Christ will say, What have I to do any more with idols. Remember where the nails came from that nailed Him to the tree. Our idols nailed Him there, our sins pierced His heart. When you see this, you will hate the sin that slew your best Friend and you will turn from it not with a superficial repentance that only affects the surface and withers in a night, but with a repentance unto life which is a hatred of sin and a turning from it and a determination in the strength of God to forsake it.

Do not think to draw up repentance from the depths of your own heart as you might draw water from a well. You can turn from outward sins in your own strength, but to be turned from wicked thoughts and an evil nature you will need to look to a stronger arm and a mightier power than a merely mortal one. True repentance is the gift of God and it is inseparable from faith. He cometh with two love notes, repentance and faith. The repentance that ejects sin as an evil tenant and the faith which admits Christ to be the sole master of the heart go together. Any repentance that keeps you from believing in Christ is a repentance that needs to be repented of. You are to ask Christ to work repentance in you by His Holy Spirit through belief of the truth as it is set before you in the Word of God. And where there is real repentance, there is the sure and infallible sign of pardon, for the blood of Jesus Christ, God's Son, cleanses from all sin all who truly repent and believe in Him.

This turning must be practical and complete. The Psalmist said, I thought on my ways and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. It is not a turning of the head only, but of the feet. It is a turning that yields works meet for repentance and that lasts, not for a day but for a life. Repentance is the daily and hourly duty of the man who believes in Christ, and as we walk by faith from the wicket gate to the celestial city, so our right hand companion all the journey through must be repentance. In vain is salvation hoped for from the hills and from the multitude of mountains. Truly in the Lord our God is the salvation of Israel.

May the Lord grant you this grace. May He reveal every evil way that displeases Him, and give you to hate it and to turn from it with your whole heart, and to trust only in Jesus who bore your sin and who alone can keep you in His presence and peace. May He wash you thoroughly and cleanse you, and restore unto you the joy of His salvation, and keep your feet firmly in His righteous path until you dwell securely with Him forever.
