We hear your distress, and our hearts ache for the fear and torment you are experiencing through these nightmares. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy, but Jesus came that we might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). The dreams you describe—snakes and death—are often tools the devil uses to instill fear and doubt, but we must remember that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). The enemy wants you to believe the lie that you are beyond God’s grace, but that is far from the truth.
First, we must address the fear of hell. If you have never placed your faith in Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then the fear of judgment is real, for Scripture tells us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23), and the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23). But the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord! If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9). Salvation is not earned by works but is a free gift received by faith. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Christ, we urge you to do so now. Repent of your sins, turn to Jesus, and ask Him to be your Savior and Lord. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).
If you are already a believer, then these nightmares may be an attack from the enemy, seeking to shake your faith and cause you to doubt your salvation. The Bible tells us that we are sealed with the Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance (Ephesians 1:13-14). Once you are in Christ, nothing can snatch you out of His hand (John 10:28-29). The enemy may try to accuse you, but Jesus is our advocate before the Father (1 John 2:1). Stand firm in your identity as a child of God, and resist the devil, and he will flee from you (James 4:7).
We also want to address the symbolism of snakes in your dreams. In Scripture, the serpent is a symbol of Satan, who deceived Eve in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 3:1-15). However, Jesus came to crush the head of the serpent (Genesis 3:15), and through His death and resurrection, He disarmed the powers and authorities and made a public spectacle of them (Colossians 2:15). The enemy may try to intimidate you with these dreams, but greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4). Do not allow fear to take root in your heart. Instead, put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11).
Let us pray for you now:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up our dear brother/sister who is tormented by fear and nightmares. Lord, we rebuke the spirit of fear and every lying spirit that seeks to steal their peace and shake their faith. We declare that You have not given them a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. We ask that You would surround them with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, and guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7).
Lord, if they have not yet placed their faith in You, we pray that You would draw them to Yourself. Open their eyes to see their need for a Savior, and let them experience the depth of Your love and grace. If they are already Your child, we ask that You would strengthen their faith and remind them of the security they have in You. Help them to stand firm on Your promises and to resist the enemy’s lies.
Father, we break the power of these nightmares in Jesus’ name. We command every spirit of fear, death, and torment to flee and never return. Fill their mind with Your truth and their heart with Your peace. Give them restful sleep, free from the enemy’s attacks. Surround them with Your angels to guard and protect them (Psalm 91:11). Remind them that You are their refuge and fortress, and in You, they can find safety (Psalm 91:2).
Lord, we ask that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit, who will guide them into all truth and comfort them in their time of need. Help them to meditate on Your Word day and night, so that they may be like a tree planted by streams of water, yielding fruit in season and prospering in all they do (Psalm 1:2-3). Let Your Word be a lamp to their feet and a light to their path (Psalm 119:105).
We thank You, Father, that You are faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9). We thank You that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). We declare that our brother/sister is more than a conqueror through Him who loved them (Romans 8:37). In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
Now, we encourage you to take practical steps to combat these nightmares. Begin by saturating your mind with Scripture. Memorize verses that speak of God’s protection and peace, such as Psalm 23, Psalm 91, and Isaiah 41:10. Before you go to sleep, pray and ask God to fill your mind with His truth and to protect you from the enemy’s attacks. You may also want to anoint your room with oil and pray over it, declaring it a place of peace and safety in Jesus’ name.
Surround yourself with godly community. Share your struggles with trusted believers who can pray for you and encourage you. The enemy wants to isolate you, but God has called us to bear one another’s burdens (Galatians 6:2). Do not face this battle alone.
Lastly, examine your heart. Are there areas of your life where you have given the enemy a foothold? Unconfessed sin can open the door to the enemy’s attacks. If there is anything in your life that does not align with God’s Word, repent and turn away from it. God is faithful to forgive and cleanse you (1 John 1:9).
Remember, the enemy is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44). Do not believe his deceptions. Stand firm on God’s Word, and take every thought captive to obey Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5). You are a child of the Most High God, and He is your protector, your refuge, and your strength. Trust in Him, and He will give you peace.
