Health Update & Prayer Request

Leah B.

Humble Servant of All
Well, the prednisone is really helping me with this COPD exacerbation. I took my first dose last night. Just took my second, plus I took my antibiotic. Because I have GERD and need omeprazole [acid blocker], I had to set my alarm for seven a.m. to take the azythromycin, then wait two hours to take the omeprazole. That's another issue here: I actually have not one, but two, conditions that can hurt your breathing and give you chest pain. In fact, I finally got the GERD diagnosis when I showed up in the ER thinking I was having a heart attack. My point here? I'm very frustrated. I have to always be factoring what could be causing what. I have to stay calm even when things get scary. I work SO hard to exercise and stay on top of my COPD. This is in spite of problematic feet, arthritic knees and the never-ending jaw issues, TMJ and a movement disorder of unknown etiology. Anyway, no matter what I do, I get one-to-two COPD flares per year, guaranteed one in mid-November. I always end up being angry with myself because I smoked, and I always get scared I won't recover from the episode. I picture my mother, who also had COPD/emphysema, on her death bed in the hospital; and I remember how she just suffered and suffered, especially the last three years of her life. I pray I don't end up like her. When I'm not having a flare-up, you wouldn't even know I have lung disease, but, wow! This episode has turned out to be a harsh reminder.

Anyway, on a happier note, my exercise bike has arrived! Gym quality! Thank you, Jesus, for it getting here early. This being said, I am asking for prayer in Jesus's name about yet another health problem, namely, bilateral thumb arthritis. I have it in all three thumb joints, both sides. Of most concern is the thumb bases, right worse than left. I was doing fairly well with this. Then last night I was just sitting up typing with my index fingers, not even using my thumbs, and out of nowhere, I was getting stabbing pain in my right thumb base and ache in the left one. I finally threw on braces and tried to get some sleep. Probably got three hours if that. I'm scared. I am losing control over my life. My apartment is in disarray. I'm behind because of the COPD flare, because of getting ready for Thanksgiving while going to marathon doctors' appointments and so forth. I'm so behind! I invited my dad, my niece and her kids for "Little Christmas" on the 17th. I have to clean. I have to cook. I can't live without my hands!!! So far I have managed to not need steroid injections into my thumbs for two years. Please pray in Jesus's name the pain goes down. Please pray I get the right care for this condition in a timely fashion. They have all different surgeries and even joint replacements. It's just you get put through all sorts of conservative treatment, multiple rounds of injections, first. [As an aside, it's a JOKE to try to cook with thumb braces on. I think if it gets that bad, I should get the surgery!] Anyway, please pray about that. I just can't take any more pain and problems like this! It's too much!

We hear your heart, dear one, and we lift you up with deep compassion before the throne of grace. Your struggles with COPD, GERD, and now the debilitating pain in your thumbs are not unseen by our Heavenly Father, who numbers every hair on your head and collects every tear in His bottle (Psalm 56:8). You are carrying a heavy burden, and we stand with you in prayer, asking the Lord to strengthen you where you are weak and to grant you His peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7).

First, we want to acknowledge the weight of your past decisions and the guilt you carry regarding smoking. While it is right to recognize the consequences of our actions, we must also remember that God’s grace is greater than our sins. Jesus came not to condemn, but to save (John 3:17), and He offers forgiveness and healing to all who turn to Him. We rebuke the spirit of condemnation that seeks to keep you in bondage to shame. The blood of Jesus cleanses us from all unrighteousness (1 John 1:9), and we declare that you are forgiven and set free from the chains of regret. Let this truth sink deep into your heart: your past does not define your future, and God is able to redeem even the years the locusts have eaten (Joel 2:25).

We also lift up your fears about the future, particularly the memory of your mother’s suffering. It is natural to fear what we cannot control, but Scripture reminds us that God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). We pray that the Lord would replace your anxiety with His perfect peace, and that He would give you the assurance that He holds your life in His hands. You are not alone in this battle, and we declare that the same God who sustained your mother through her trials is your ever-present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). We rebuke the spirit of fear and speak life and hope over your lungs, your body, and your future.

Father, we come before You now, lifting up this dear sister in Christ. Lord, You are the Great Physician, and we ask that You would touch her lungs with Your healing hand. Strengthen her breathing, reduce the inflammation, and grant her relief from the COPD flare-ups. We pray that the prednisone and antibiotics would work effectively in her body, and that You would minimize any side effects. Lord, we also ask for Your healing touch on her thumbs. Ease the pain, reduce the inflammation, and restore strength and mobility to her hands. Guide her doctors to the right treatments, whether conservative or surgical, and give her wisdom to make decisions that honor You.

We know that physical healing is not always immediate, so we also pray for endurance and perseverance. Help her to press on, even when the road is difficult. Remind her that she can do all things through Christ who strengthens her (Philippians 4:13). Give her the energy and motivation to keep up with her exercise routine, even when her body resists. Lord, we ask that You would provide practical help for her as she prepares for her guests. Send people to assist her with cleaning, cooking, and organizing her home, so that she is not overwhelmed. We declare that her hands will not fail her, and that she will be able to serve her loved ones with joy.

We also pray for her emotional and mental well-being. The frustration, fear, and sense of losing control are heavy burdens to carry, but You, Lord, are close to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Fill her with Your peace, and remind her that You are her refuge and strength. Help her to cast all her anxieties on You, because You care for her (1 Peter 5:7). We rebuke the spirit of despair and speak hope and joy over her life.

Finally, Lord, we ask that You would draw her closer to You through this trial. May she find comfort in Your presence and strength in Your Word. Help her to trust in You with all her heart and lean not on her own understanding (Proverbs 3:5-6). We pray that she would experience Your love in tangible ways, and that she would be a testimony of Your faithfulness to others who are struggling.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
