Guide me to the right Bible translation

We hear your heart in this confusion and we understand how overwhelming it can be when you hear conflicting voices about which Bible translation is right and which is wrong, and we want to seek the Lord's wisdom together with you in Jesus' name.

We want to gently correct the fear and division that often surrounds this discussion. The enemy loves to bring confusion about the Word of God, but God is not the author of confusion and He has faithfully preserved His Word for us. The King James Version is a faithful and beautiful translation that God has used powerfully for centuries, though its older English can be difficult for many modern readers to understand clearly. The New Living Translation is not wrong in the sense of being evil, but it is a thought for thought paraphrase that prioritizes readability over literal word for word accuracy, which makes it helpful for devotional reading but less precise for deep study. Neither approach means you are in sin for reading one or the other, but we encourage you to build your foundation on a translation that is faithful to the original Hebrew and Greek manuscripts and uses formal equivalence, and then you may compare others for clarity as you study. What matters most is that you have a faithful translation that you will actually read, study, and obey daily, and that you allow the Holy Spirit to illuminate it to you.

The Word itself tells us Your word is a lamp to my feet, and a light for my path Psalm 119:105 and The entrance of your words gives light. It gives understanding to the simple Psalm 119:130. We are also reminded that Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work 2 Timothy 3:16-17. Jesus promised that the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things, and will remind you of all that I said to you John 14:26. For this reason we encourage you to ask God directly for wisdom, for If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach; and it will be given to him James 1:5.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to lovingly share that it is only through Jesus that we have access to God and can truly understand His Word with spiritual eyes. Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. If you have not already, we encourage you to confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, for with the heart, one believes resulting in righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made resulting in salvation Romans 10:9-10. It is through faith in Jesus that the veil is removed and the Scriptures come alive.

We pray together for you now. Father, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ, asking for Your will to be done in our dear reader's life. We ask that You grant wisdom and discernment and peace as they seek the right translation of Your holy Word. Remove confusion and fear, and lead them to a faithful translation they can understand and cherish and obey. Let Your Holy Spirit open their eyes to behold wonderful things from Your law, and transform them through the reading of Your Word. Draw them into a deeper relationship with Jesus, for He is the living Word, and help them to daily hear Your voice through Scripture. Give them a hunger for truth and a love for Your Word that endures. We ask this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus, our Savior and Lord, amen.

We hear how disorienting this can feel when voices you trust say opposite things. You want to take God's Word seriously and choose well, and that desire itself matters to Him.

It may help to know that many faithful translations share the same aim, to put the original languages into clear English, they just do it with a different approach. Some stay very close to the word-for-word form, which is why the KJV can sound more formal and poetic. Others, like the NLT, try to carry the thought in more everyday phrasing so it reads smoothly. Neither approach means the other is wrong, and churches we serve use several good translations side by side for study and preaching.

When the debate gets loud it can keep you from simply reading, so a simple way forward often helps.

If it would help, try this for the next few weeks: choose one translation you find clear and readable to be your main Bible for daily reading, and keep a second one nearby to compare when a verse feels confusing. It also helps to ask your pastor which translation your church teaches from, so you can follow along easily on Sundays and ask questions as they come up. The goal is a Bible you will actually open and understand, with help from others in your church family.

Father, we thank You for this hunger to hear You through Your Word. Give our friend calm and clarity as they choose, help Your Word come alive as they read, and guide them to wise counsel in their local church. Lead them to the translation where they can hear You most clearly and keep growing with You. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your desire to understand the Scriptures aright is a precious thing, and I thank God for it. Many voices will say this translation is wrong and that one is wrong, and without wisdom man is as the wild asses colt, he runs here and there, wasting strength which might be profitably employed. Wisdom is the compass by which man is to steer across the trackless waste of life, and that wisdom is not found in the clamour of opinions but in bowing with submission to the will of God, for by that very fact we are furnished with unerring guidance.

Remember what has been said of the Bible itself, O Bible it cannot be said of any other book that it is perfect and pure, but of thee we can declare all wisdom is gathered up in thee without a particle of folly. This is the judge that ends the strife where wit and reason fail. The Bible treats of great things and of great things only, there is nothing in this Bible which is unimportant, and no book was ever so suggestive as the Bible. Therefore be Bible readers, be Bible searchers, and let the Book itself be your chief counsellor.

Haste too is the author of a great deal of mischief in human life. Do not be hurried into fear because one says the King James is wrong or another says the New Living Translation is wrong. Divine Wisdom dressed in robes of love and tenderness invites us to run into her arms, not to be driven by harsh contention. Holiness is as near akin to perfect wisdom as sin is to insanity, so seek a clear conscience and a quiet heart before the Lord and He will guide you.

Concerning these two translations, let me speak plainly for your help. The King James Version is a faithful and reverent translation, majestic in language and true to the original tongues, yet its words are four hundred years old and may be hard for many to understand at first reading. The New Living Translation seeks to make the meaning plain in present speech and is easy to read, yet it often paraphrases rather than rendering word for word. Neither need be despised if it faithfully gives you the great things of God's law and lifts up Christ the power and wisdom of God. Many faithful souls keep a more literal translation for careful study, such as the King James or the English Standard Version or the New American Standard, and use a plainer version like the New Living Translation to help their understanding, comparing one with the other.

Choose therefore a translation you will actually read day by day, one that is faithful to the Hebrew and Greek and that you can understand with prayer. Read it, pray over it, obey it, and hold fast this principle infused in every man who takes God for his Guide, avoid everything that is evil. If you do this, God Himself will be your Guide, for He has promised to guide you with His counsel and afterward receive you to glory. May the Lord give you a love for His Word above every dispute about words, and may you find Christ on every page, for He is the sum and substance of all wisdom.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your desire to handle the word of God faithfully is good and God honors that hunger. Do not let the arguments you have heard throw your mind into confusion, for confusion does not help you hear God more clearly.

Every translation involves choices about how to bring the original languages into English. Some, like the King James Version, are beautiful and have served the church for centuries, but they use archaic and sometimes obscure words that can make the sense harder to grasp for modern readers. Others, like the New Living Translation, use very modern and idiomatic language to make the meaning plain, but they paraphrase more freely and are less word for word. Neither approach means the Bible itself is wrong, but it does mean each translation has strengths and limits.

That is why faithful editors have often revised translations to keep the meaning accurate while replacing outdated expressions with clearer modern language, and correcting where the rendering obscured the connection of passages. The goal is always the same, to make the sense plainer without changing the truth.

For steady reading and study, it is wise to choose a translation that is both accurate and readable enough that you will actually read it every day. Many believers find help in translations such as the English Standard Version, the New American Standard Bible, the Christian Standard Bible, the New King James Version, or the New International Version as a primary Bible. You can then use the King James Version or the New Living Translation alongside it for comparison when a passage seems unclear.

I encourage you to do three things. First, pray and ask God for wisdom before you read, for He gives wisdom generously. Second, seek times and places clear of confusion for your reading, since solitude is fitting for the study of wisdom and for drawing near to God. Third, read consistently and bring questions to a trusted pastor or mature believer in your local church who can help you.

The central message of Scripture, that salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and all that God requires for life and godliness, comes through clearly in any faithful translation. Choose one you can understand and trust, give yourself to reading it daily, and God will use it to teach you, correct you, and make you wise for salvation.

I will pray that God grants you a clear mind, a settled heart, and joy as you hear His voice in His word.

It is understandable to feel pulled in different directions when you hear strong opinions about Bible translations. Wanting to handle God's word faithfully is a good desire, and God honors that desire.

God made you in His image with the real ability to choose. That ability would mean nothing if there were no options set before you. For choice to be meaningful there has to be something to choose, and the choice you make has to be respected. God does not make you a robot. He influences you toward what is good and right, and the enemy influences you toward what is not, but in the end the choice itself is yours to make and God respects it. That is why your love and obedience can be meaningful to Him, because you freely give it.

That same principle applies as you seek His word. He has not left you without guidance, but He does leave you the responsibility to choose to seek, to read, and to obey. He tells you the consequences and invites you to life, saying choose life that you may live, and whosoever will may come and drink of the water of life freely.

When it comes to translations, it helps to understand what they are. No English translation is made without difficulty, because Hebrew and Greek phrases can be hard to carry over exactly. The translation that uses older English was faithful with the manuscripts that were available at that time. Since then more ancient manuscripts have been discovered, and in some places scholars now believe a difficult phrase is more accurately understood in a slightly different way, like a coat described one way then and now more clearly as a sleeveless coat. That does not mean the earlier translators were unfaithful, it means we have more help now to be precise.

The best help for understanding the Bible is the Bible itself, comparing Scripture with Scripture. One passage sheds light on another, and the whole counsel of God clarifies the parts that are harder to understand.

A translation that tries to follow the original words very closely and one that tries to put the thought into clear modern English are both trying to do the same work in different ways. One may sound more formal and familiar if you grew up hearing it, the other may be easier to understand at first reading. Neither approach is automatically wrong. What matters is whether the translation is faithful to the original texts, does not add to or take away from what God has said, and helps you actually read, understand, and obey.

So do not stay paralyzed between opinions. Pray and ask the Holy Spirit, who has come to reveal God's love to you, to guide you. Choose a faithful translation you will read consistently and understand clearly. It is wise to have more than one faithful translation available so you can compare them when a verse is difficult. As you read, keep comparing Scripture with Scripture and ask God to show you what it means and how to live it.

God respects the sincere choice of a heart that wants to know Him. If you choose to seek Him through His word with a willing heart to obey what you find, He will meet you there and make Himself known.

Some say some Bibles are better translations than others, and most say the King James version is the best. Although they all record the same events, is one actually better than the others? And, is King James one the best, as most believe?
