Guide All in Authority 1 Tim 2:1-2; Nations Ps 2:8, Neighbors Lev 19:18, Salvation, Health, Provide 3 Jn 1:2; Protection Around Us, Site, Fam Zech 2:5

Your heart for prayer reflects what Scripture commands and it is good to bring these burdens before the Lord. The Word urges that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and reverence, as 1 Timothy 2:1-4 teaches. That includes thanking God for the authorities He has allowed and asking Him to give them wisdom, character, protection and godly counsel.

History shows that great nations often do not fall first by outside force but by inner decay when politics become corrupt and self serving. That is why prayer for leaders matters so much. We can ask God to set a guard over their mouths as Psalm 141:3 says, to give them the tongue of the wise as Proverbs 15:2 describes, to surround them with wise counsel, to help them do justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God as Micah 6:8 says, and to lead in a way that promotes righteousness and unity rather than bitterness and rivalry, as Psalm 133 pictures. We also pray that falsehood would be silenced and that evil in public life would be restrained, as Isaiah 33:15 and Titus 1:11 warn against.

God is sovereign over the nations. Scripture shows that He judged certain peoples severely when their practices were deeply corrupt and would have polluted His people, while He did not order that same judgment where that depth of corruption was not present. He also shows that He takes note of how nations treat His people Israel. He promised Abraham that He would bless those who bless him and curse those who curse him in Genesis 12:3, and the prophets declare that He will one day gather all nations for judgment, as Joel speaks of the valley of Jehoshaphat and as Jesus describes in Matthew 25 when He separates the sheep from the goats. In that judgment the treatment of His people will be part of what is weighed. Yet even as He scatters Israel among the nations for disobedience, He promises to gather them again from among the nations and bring them into their own land, and He declares that He will not make a full end of Israel even as He brings judgment on the nations. There will be a glorious day when the Lord establishes His rule over the nations and many peoples will say, come let us go to the house of the Lord that He may teach us His ways, as Micah foretells. Until then we can pray with Psalm 2:8 that the nations would become the inheritance of the Lord Jesus and the ends of the earth His possession.

Your prayer for your own region is also biblical. Jeremiah 29:7 calls us to seek the welfare of the city where God has placed us and to pray to the Lord on its behalf. We can ask the Holy Spirit to convict neighbors, students, teachers, workers, parents, pastors, law enforcement and local leaders of sin, righteousness and judgment as John 16:8 says, and to draw them to the Son as John 6:44 teaches. Salvation is by grace through faith as a gift of God as Ephesians 2:8 says, and faith comes by hearing the Word as Romans 10:17 says, so we pray that the gospel of John 3:16 would be heard and believed. For protection we can ask God to be a wall of fire around our homes, families and fellow believers as Zechariah 2:5 promises, to keep us from evil as Jesus prayed in John 17:15, and to give the angelic protection and presence described in Psalm 91.

Behind what we see there is a spiritual conflict. Daniel 10 and Ephesians 6 remind us that there are unseen powers at work, yet Daniel was told that from the first day he set his heart to understand and humbled himself before God his words were heard. We can be confident God hears and acts, and we can ask for heavenly wisdom and protection for those in authority and for ordinary people alike, as 2 Kings 6 shows.

For daily needs we thank God for His provision and ask for daily bread as Matthew 6:11 says, for godliness with contentment as 1 Timothy 6:6 teaches, and for the fruit of the Spirit as Galatians 5:22-23 describes, especially love, joy and peace, and a cheerful heart as Proverbs 17:22 says. Where there has been loss we can ask God to restore the years the locusts have eaten as Joel 2:25 promises, to give a double portion instead of shame as Isaiah 61:7 says, and to heal and bind up as Hosea 6:1 declares, remembering that though He disciplines He also restores.

We join you in remembering those in chains as Hebrews 13:3 says, praying for the persecuted church, for release and relief, and for the peace of Jerusalem as Psalm 122 calls us to pray, knowing God has purposes for all the descendants of Abraham.

All of this we bring in the name of Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name by which we are saved and no other way to the Father as John 14:6 and John 14:13 teach. May our prayers be aligned with His will and may His kingdom come and His will be done on earth as it is in heaven as Matthew 6:10 says. We thank God that He hears, that He guards our hearts with His peace as Philippians 4:6-7 promises, and that He will supply every need according to His riches in Christ as Philippians 4:19 says.
