Give us the strength to hold on, comfort our broken spirit, and remind us of Your unfailing love when we cannot feel it

Psalm 42:9:
I say to God my Rock, “Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?”

A Prayer Based on Psalm 42:9: Our prayer:
"Dear God, our Rock and our refuge, our heart is heavy today. Honestly, LORD God, it feels like You are far away or have forgotten our struggle. We are weighed down by sorrow and the pressures around us. You see the pain we carry and the enemies we face. Please do not leave us in this darkness. Give us the strength to hold on, comfort our broken spirit, and remind us of Your unfailing love when we cannot feel it. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen."

We join with you in this honest and beautiful prayer from Psalm 42:9, and we thank you for sharing the cry of your heart so openly before the Lord. It is not faithless to ask God why it feels like He has forgotten you, the psalmist himself did, and God welcomes that honesty when it is brought to Him as our Rock and refuge.

We hear the weariness in asking for strength to hold on, comfort for a broken spirit, and a reminder of His unfailing love when it cannot be felt. That feeling of distance does not mean He has moved. His Word assures us He has not forgotten you for a moment.

Psalm 61:2 says From the end of the earth, I will call to you when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. And Psalm 34:18 promises Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. When we feel oppressed and weighed down with sorrow, He draws nearer, not farther away.

We are reminded that His love does not depend on our ability to feel it. Lamentations 3:22-23 tells us It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion doesn't fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness. Isaiah 41:10 also comforts us, Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. And Deuteronomy 31:6 gives us confidence that He will not fail you nor forsake you.

We love how you called on Jesus as the Bread of Heaven and the Word of Life, for He truly is. John 6:35 says Jesus said to them, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty. When our spirits are broken and hungry, He alone sustains us, and through Him we have access to the Father.

We pray together with you now.

Father, You are our Rock and our refuge, and we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see the heaviness of this heart, the mourning and the pressure from the enemy that feels so oppressive. Lord, when it feels like You are far away, help us to remember that You have engraved us on the palms of Your hands and You will never forget us. Give us strength to hold on when we have no strength left of our own. Comfort our broken and crushed spirit with Your nearness. Pour out Your unfailing love upon us in a fresh way, even when our feelings tell us otherwise, and let Your Word, the living Bread of Heaven, feed and restore us day by day. Lift our eyes to hope again as Psalm 42:11 says, Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God. For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God. Uphold us with Your righteous right hand and lead us to the Rock that is higher than we are. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.

We hear the honesty in your prayer and we are holding it with you. To tell God that He feels far away while still calling Him your Rock takes real courage. It shows you are still reaching for Him even when sorrow and pressure make it hard to feel His nearness. Feeling forgotten does not mean you are forgotten.

When the heart is heavy like this, hope can feel very thin. We have found hope is less a passing feeling and more what the heart does while it waits, staying anchored to who God is even when emotions are numb. It is understandable to feel weighed down and oppressed and still be securely held by Him. He sees the pain you carry and He is not leaving you in the dark.

You do not need to carry this alone. If you have a trusted pastor, counselor, or friend, consider letting them know how you have been feeling in these days. If this heaviness and low spirit continue, please also consider reaching out to a doctor or counselor for support in person, alongside prayer. You deserve steady care around you.

Father, You see our friend in this mourning and pressure. When Your love feels distant, draw near in a way they can sense. Give strength to hold on for today, comfort their broken spirit, and keep them through this season step by step according to Your will. We trust them to Your unfailing care. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Your cry is one that the psalmist himself uttered, and therefore you are not alone in it. To say to God, my Rock, Why have you forgotten me, is not the language of unbelief but the mourning of a heart that still knows where its refuge lies. Even when you cannot feel His love, His love has not ceased to act toward you.

Remember that trouble does not come without provision. God has provided a strength by which you shall meet it, and provided a way through by which you shall escape from it. There are promises in His Word suitable to every conceivable condition of the saints, and this promise is yours in the storm as well as in the calm, Fear you not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God. The comfort which God gives will be a comfort to suit your present place and position. Even where His furnace is hottest, even there shall you have your comfort, for He does not leave His children in darkness without a lamp.

You ask to be reminded of His unfailing love when you cannot feel it. God does not merely speak of His love and ask you to believe it without proof. Being love, He must display love, nor can He rest with merely speaking of it. His love has manifested itself in action, and hereby perceive we the love of God, because He laid down His life for us. When feeling fails, look to that deed. The Bread of Heaven, the Word of Life, Jesus who is the Word of God, came in mortal flesh to serve and to give Himself for you. He who gave His Son to die for you gave His Spirit to live in you, to quicken and renew and keep you to this day. That cross is the unchanging proof that you are not forgotten, even when your heart is heavy and oppressed.

He will not suffer you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that you may be able to bear it. Sometimes that way is simply to stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, to hold on in quiet trust until He stills the tumult within. He who calmed the winds and waves can calm the storm raised by doubt in your own soul.

May the Lord now give you strength to hold on, bind up your broken spirit with His own tender hand, and comfort you as one whom his mother comforts. May He draw you to His Word where Christ is set forth as your daily bread, and to His house where His people meet, for there He delights to apply His comfort. May you find again that to dwell in love is to dwell in God, and to be kept in His unfailing love which laid down its life for you, and which will never let you go.
