Free but not free

Phoyren

Disciple of Prayer
I have been marijuana free, medication free, and pornography free for a month, but vivid imagery still comes to my mind. I keep telling myself I should be proud for nixing such bad habits, but they feel like they’re only around the corner waiting for me to slip up. These thoughts no doubt are part of withdrawal but also from the devil. Please pray that I would begin to experience lasting victory from my previous and current addictions, that my mind would be soothed and filled with spiritually sound thoughts, and that I would truly be set free.

We rejoice with you over the victory you’ve already claimed in breaking free from marijuana, harmful medications, and pornography for this past month! This is no small feat, and we give God all the glory for the strength He has given you to resist these temptations. Yet we also hear the heaviness in your heart—the lingering battle in your mind, the fear of relapse, and the sense that these chains, though broken, still cast shadows over your thoughts. You are absolutely right to recognize that these intrusive images are not just remnants of withdrawal but also fiery darts from the enemy, who seeks to drag you back into bondage. But take heart, beloved, for the One who is in you is greater than he who is in the world (1 John 4:4).

The apostle Paul understood this struggle well when he wrote, *"For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, that you may not do the things that you desire"* (Galatians 5:17). The fact that you are resisting these thoughts and crying out for freedom is evidence that the Holy Spirit is at work in you. Do not lose hope! The battle for your mind is real, but so is the power of Christ to renew it. Romans 12:2 commands us, *"Don’t be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what is the good, well-pleasing, and perfect will of God."* This renewal is a process, and it requires persistence in the Word, in prayer, and in the presence of fellow believers who can encourage and hold you accountable.

We must also address the subtle lie you’ve mentioned—that you *should* be proud of your progress. While it’s good to acknowledge God’s work in your life, pride is a dangerous snare. Your freedom is not a result of your own strength but of Christ’s victory on the cross. As it says in 2 Corinthians 10:5, *"We are destroying sophisticated arguments and every exalted and proud thing that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ."* Your focus must remain on Him, not on your own resolve. When those vivid images arise, immediately reject them in the name of Jesus, replace them with Scripture, and pray for the Holy Spirit to flood your mind with truth. Psalm 119:9 asks, *"How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to Your word."* Memorize and meditate on verses that combat temptation, such as 1 Corinthians 10:13: *"No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure."*

We also urge you to examine your heart for any unconfessed sin or areas where you may still be holding onto idols. Addiction often fills a void that only God can truly satisfy. Are you seeking Him daily in prayer and His Word? Are you surrounded by a community of believers who can walk with you in this fight? If not, we strongly encourage you to find a Bible-believing church where you can be discipled and held accountable. James 5:16 tells us, *"Confess your offenses to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective."*

Lastly, we notice that your request did not invoke the name of Jesus, and we want to gently but firmly remind you that there is no other name under heaven by which we can be saved or find true freedom (Acts 4:12). It is only through faith in Christ—His death, burial, and resurrection—that we are set free from sin’s power. If you have not yet surrendered your life fully to Him, we implore you to do so today. Repent of your sins, believe in Jesus as your Lord and Savior, and ask Him to fill you with His Spirit. He alone can break every chain and give you the lasting victory you seek.

Now, let us pray for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up our brother who is fighting for freedom. Lord, You see the battle raging in his mind—the lingering images, the fear of relapse, the enemy’s whispers that he will never be truly free. But we declare that Your Word is true: *"If the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed!"* (John 8:36). Father, we ask that You would bind every demonic stronghold in his life. Rebuke the enemy, Satan, and command him to flee in Jesus’ name. Fill our brother’s mind with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Replace every impure thought with meditations on Your Word, and let him dwell on *"whatever things are true, whatever things are honorable, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report; if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think about these things"* (Philippians 4:8).

Lord, we pray for lasting victory over every addiction—marijuana, medications, pornography, and any other stronghold the enemy has tried to establish. Break the power of these sins in his life, and let him walk in the freedom Christ purchased on the cross. Strengthen him to resist temptation and to flee from anything that would drag him back into bondage. Surround him with godly brothers who will encourage him, pray for him, and hold him accountable. Let him not walk this path alone, but let him find refuge in Your body, the Church.

Father, if there is any area of his life where he has not fully surrendered to You, convict him by Your Spirit. Draw him deeper into relationship with You, that he may find his satisfaction in Christ alone. Fill him with Your Holy Spirit, that he may walk in power, love, and self-control (2 Timothy 1:7). Let him know, beyond any doubt, that he is Your beloved child, redeemed and set free.

We thank You, Lord, for the victory that is already his in Christ. We declare that no weapon formed against him shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17), and that he will *"be strong in the Lord, and in the strength of his might"* (Ephesians 6:10). Guard his heart and mind in Christ Jesus, and let him experience the fullness of freedom You have promised. We ask all this in the precious and powerful name of Jesus, our Savior and Deliverer. Amen.

Stand firm, brother. The Lord is with you, and He will never leave you nor forsake you (Deuteronomy 31:6). Keep fighting, keep praying, and keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and finisher of your faith (Hebrews 12:2). Victory is yours in Him!

We're right there with you, fighting alongside you in spirit. We understand the battle you're facing, the lingering thoughts and fears that can feel overwhelming. But remember, you're not alone. We're here, and so is Jesus, right by your side.

We want to encourage you, brother, to keep pushing those thoughts away in the name of Jesus. Every time they come, rebuke them, and replace them with God's Word. Meditate on verses like Philippians 4:8, filling your mind with what's good, pure, and lovely. And remember, it's not about your strength, but Christ's power in you (Ephesians 3:20).

Also, keep seeking God daily. Dive deep into His Word and spend time in prayer. Surround yourself with a community of believers who can support and hold you accountable. We're here for you, and we believe God is going to give you the lasting victory you desire.

Keep fighting, brother. You're stronger than you think, and Jesus is right there with you. We're praying for you, and we believe in the power of God's Word to set you free. Keep your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2). Victory is yours in Him!
