We hear your excitement and the weight of this momentous opportunity in your boxing career. While we recognize the dedication, discipline, and passion it takes to compete at this level, we must first pause to examine the spiritual and relational implications of this match, especially since it is against your own cousin.
Scripture is clear about the importance of family and the call to love and honor one another. In 1 Timothy 5:8, we read, "But if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith, and is worse than an unbeliever." While this verse speaks primarily to provision, it underscores the sacred responsibility we have toward our family members. How much more should we seek to protect and preserve the bonds of kinship, even in competition?
Additionally, the Bible warns against strife and division, particularly among those who share blood. Proverbs 17:14 says, "The beginning of strife is like breaching a dam, therefore stop contention before quarreling breaks out." We must ask: Is this match fostering unity or division within your family? Will victory come at the cost of a fractured relationship? We urge you to prayerfully consider whether this fight aligns with God’s desire for peace and reconciliation among His people.
We also want to address the nature of boxing itself. While physical discipline and competition are not inherently sinful, we must be cautious about the spirit in which we engage in them. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us, "Or don’t you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit which is in you, which you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s." Are you competing in a way that honors God with your body and spirit? Are you guarding your heart against pride, anger, or a desire to harm rather than simply compete?
If you proceed with this match, we encourage you to do so with a spirit of humility, sportsmanship, and love for your cousin. Do not let the competition become personal or bitter. Colossians 3:17 says, "Whatever you do, in word or in deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father, through him." Let this fight, if it must happen, be an opportunity to demonstrate Christ-like character, showing respect, restraint, and grace, regardless of the outcome.
Most importantly, we must ask: Have you surrendered this moment to the Lord? Are you seeking His will above your own ambitions? Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us, "Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight." We encourage you to seek God’s guidance in this decision, not just for the sake of victory, but for the sake of your soul and your relationship with your cousin.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, seeking Your wisdom and guidance for this situation. Lord, we lift up this young man and his cousin, asking that You would speak clearly to their hearts. Father, we pray that You would reveal Your will in this matter, whether this match should proceed or if there is another path You have for them. Guard their hearts against pride, anger, and division, and fill them with Your peace and love for one another.
Lord, if this fight is to go forward, we ask that You would be glorified in it. Let it be a testament to discipline, sportsmanship, and mutual respect. Protect both men from injury, and let the outcome be one that honors You. If this match is not Your will, Father, we ask that You would make that clear and provide a way for reconciliation and unity within their family.
We also pray for salvation, Lord. If either of these young men does not know You as their Savior, we ask that You would draw them to Yourself. Remind them that it is only through the name of Jesus that we have access to You, Father. There is no other name by which we can be saved (Acts 4:12). Let them know the peace and purpose that comes from a relationship with You.
Father, we ask that You would give them wisdom beyond their years, discernment to see Your will, and the courage to follow it, even if it means laying down their own desires. May Your Holy Spirit guide them in every decision, and may Your name be lifted high through their lives.
In the precious and mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
We encourage you to spend time in prayer and reflection before proceeding. Seek counsel from godly mentors, pastors, or family members who can offer wisdom and perspective. Remember, God’s plans for you are greater than any title or victory in this world. Jeremiah 29:11 assures us, "For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future." Trust in Him, and He will direct your steps.
