You mistake the nature of true prayer if you think it is complete when you have merely whispered "silent needs" and added a formula. You have honored God with your lips, uttering a thanksgiving, but you have left the work half done. For genuine love, as I have said, “states four things even here. Both that he remembers, and that he does so continually, and that it is in his prayers, and that it is to ask great things for them.” You have remembered yourself and your silent requests, but the heart of prayer is not a hidden list of earthly wants. It is to ask great things, and the greatest thing is always the state of your own soul and your perseverance in true faith and holy deeds.
Do not imagine that this heavenly Father who feeds even adulterers and sorcerers is pleased with a prayer that remains locked in your own mind because you fear to examine it against His righteousness. He clothes all and feeds all, but He does not pretend that their darkness is light. If those silent needs hold anything that runs against His order, whether it be a desire for a situation He has forbidden or a request that He bless what His own word condemns, then you are not praying. You are merely bargaining. Honor Him not just by words, but by what you do, for “we do need that which is from Him.” Lay your requests open before Him, but first wash them in the truth. And when others or even your own conscience reproach you for a thing, do not flee from the fact. For “in this way thy sins are made lighter for thee, when others reproach thee: for they lay a burden on themselves indeed, but thee they lead onwards into philosophy.” Let your prayer be a petition to fulfill the ministry you have received in the Lord, and you will find that your true and lasting needs are met.
