We understand your desire to fast, and we commend you for seeking to draw closer to God through this spiritual discipline. Fasting is a powerful way to humble ourselves before the Lord, seek His face, and align our hearts with His will. The Bible speaks clearly about the purpose and power of fasting when done with the right motives.
Jesus taught that fasting should not be done for show but as a private act of devotion to God. In Matthew 6:16-18, He says, *"When you fast, don’t be like the hypocrites, with sad faces. For they disfigure their faces that they may be seen by men to be fasting. Most certainly I tell you, they have received their reward. But you, when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, so that you are not seen by men to be fasting, but by your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you."*
Fasting is also a time to seek God’s guidance, repentance, and breakthrough. In Joel 2:12, the Lord calls His people to return to Him with fasting, weeping, and mourning: *"Yet even now,” says Yahweh, “turn to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning."* And in Ezra 8:23, we see that fasting is a way to seek God’s protection and favor: *"So we fasted and begged our God for this, and he granted our request."*
Before you begin your fast, we encourage you to examine your heart and motives. Are you fasting to seek God’s will, to repent, to intercede for others, or to grow in spiritual strength? Or is there another motive? Fasting without a clear, godly purpose can become an empty ritual. Additionally, if you have any health concerns, we advise you to seek wisdom in how you fast—whether it be from food, certain activities, or something else—so that it honors God and does not harm your body, which is the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
If you are fasting from food, remember that the focus should not be on the deprivation itself but on replacing that time with prayer, reading Scripture, and listening to the Holy Spirit. Use this time to draw near to God, confess any sin in your life, and seek His direction. Jesus Himself fasted for forty days in the wilderness, and it was a time of preparation and spiritual battle (Matthew 4:1-11). You, too, can experience spiritual clarity and victory through fasting when done in faith.
We also want to remind you that fasting is not a way to earn God’s favor or manipulate Him into answering your prayers. Instead, it is an act of surrender, acknowledging that He is your provider, sustainer, and Lord. Your fast should be accompanied by a heart that is fully submitted to His will, even if His answer is not what you expect.
Now, let us pray for you as you seek the Lord through fasting today:
Heavenly Father, we lift up this precious soul to You, who desires to draw near to You through fasting. Lord, we ask that You would meet them in this time of seeking. Cleanse their heart and mind, and reveal to them any area that needs repentance or surrender. Give them strength, both physically and spiritually, as they deny their flesh to focus on You. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, and let this time be marked by Your presence, Your word, and Your will.
Father, we pray that You would speak clearly to them as they seek You. Open their eyes to the truths of Your Scripture, and let them hear Your voice above all others. If there are strongholds, doubts, or distractions in their life, we ask that You would break them by the power of Your Spirit. Let this fast be a time of breakthrough, renewal, and deeper intimacy with You.
We also pray for their physical body, Lord. Sustain them and protect them as they fast. Remind them that man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from Your mouth (Matthew 4:4). May they find their satisfaction in You alone.
Finally, Father, we ask that You would use this time to align their desires with Yours. Let them come away from this fast with a clearer vision of Your purpose for their life and a greater passion to walk in obedience to You. We pray all of this in the mighty and holy name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, who gave Himself for us that we might have life and have it abundantly. Amen.
As you fast today, we encourage you to meditate on passages like Psalm 63:1-8, where David expresses his longing for God: *"God, you are my God. I will earnestly seek you. My soul thirsts for you. My flesh longs for you, in a dry and weary land, where there is no water: to see your power and your glory, as I have seen you in the sanctuary. Because your loving kindness is better than life, my lips shall praise you. So I will bless you while I live. I will lift up my hands in your name. My soul shall be satisfied as with the richest food. My mouth shall praise you with joyful lips, when I remember you on my bed, and think about you in the night watches. For you have been my help. I will rejoice in the shadow of your wings. My soul stays close to you. Your right hand holds me up."*
May the Lord bless you richly as you seek Him with all your heart. Stay rooted in His word, and let this fast be a stepping stone to a deeper walk with Christ. If you feel led, share with us how the Lord moves in your life during this time—we would love to rejoice with you and continue to lift you up in prayer.
